In an International Olympic Committee poll of Facebook fans, beach volleyball was
the only sport to be nominated in the top ten highlights of the 2012 London Olympic
Games. More than 40,000 fans took part in the poll, with Usain Bolt’s defence of his
100m and 200m titles voted No.1. The next eight positions were all filled by single
athletes or teams, but the No.10 entry was: Beach Volleyball Lights Up Horse Guards

PREVIEW 2013
16 VOLLEYBALL

Italy, Russia, Turkey and Germany have been added to the 16 teams already

qualified to ensure all of the world’s top-10 ranked nations will participate

in this year’s World Grand Prix

Looking ahead to
a landmark year
The start of a new era for the FIVB and the start of what promises
to be a landmark year for volleyball. New tournaments, World
Championship qualifiers and new formats and teams for the World
League and World Grand Prix are set to revolutionise volleyball for
2013 and beyond.

One of the highlights on the international volleyball court in 2013 will

be the qualification process across all five continents for the 2014 World
Championships, with the men’s Final Round due to be held in Poland and
the women’s in Italy. With NORCECA having already started preliminary
qualifiers in 2012, the race for the 23 vacancies to see who will join the host
countries will heat up this year before the final phase in 2014.
17

The World League and World Grand Prix will both feature a record
number of teams, with 18 in the World League and 20 in the Grand
Prix. The World League Finals will revert to their customary time-slot of
mid-July, while the World Grand Prix Finals will return to Japan, more
precisely the Olympic city of Sapporo, in late August.

Like beach volleyball, volleyball will welcome new Under-23 World

Championships alongside the four other age group tournaments
(Girls’ U18, Boys’ U19, Women’s U20 and Men’s U21), while the
annual Club World Championships will once again be one of the
highlights of the season.

The year will end instead with the FIVB World Grand Champions
Cup, which will take place in November in Japan with the continental
champions all in action vying to replace Brazil and Italy as men’s and
women’s champions respectively.

As the 2013 season
approaches, former USA
player, coach and Olympic
gold medallist Tom Hoff looks
ahead at the new volleyworld
order, and in particular the
changes to the World League
and World Grand Prix.

“The volleyball landscape is set for change in

2013 with the expansion of the World League and
World Grand Prix. The new format of these FIVB
properties will no doubt create some waves – and it’s
about time.
Volleyball can do with broader international
exposure, and the game itself can only benefit from
new countries competing with more experienced and
successful ones like Russia, Brazil and the US. The
new format might offer a chance to countries like
Bulgaria and Serbia, who have had a strong history
in the game but are short on recent international
experience, to become serious contenders in the
World League.
This is an excellent way to have more kids see the
game and to increase the base of young volleyball
players. This is nothing but great for the sport. There
are so many people who don’t have the introduction
to the game because it isn’t as prevalent in their
countries as basketball and football. But it will take
time for volleyball to get through to the kids and for
them to develop a passion for the sport.
If you’re a player, your primary concern is increasing
your success rate. But by increasing the number
of teams, you level the playing field and there is a
higher chance for upsets. It means that teams like
mine, the US men, have to be on top of our game
especially as it may be harder to analyse opponents.
Things are about to get a lot more interesting in
volleyball. Because even in volleyball, change is good.”
