Introduction
1-1 The passive voice in general
Prediction The short passive, often referred to as the agent less passive, is the most prevalent form of the passive in
English, and the percentage of passive verbs varies. Compared to narrative prose, the sort of prose may have a
significantly higher number of passives. On the one hand, the paper mentions the need to have a valid cause for
adopting the passive voice, such as when the agent is evident, unknown, or superfluous, when the speaker or writer
wishes to highlight a particular outcome, or when the agent is extremely general. The passive, on the other hand,
ought to be acknowledged as a genuine and decent English grammar construction. This list also includes some verbs
and verb forms that are not appropriate for usage in the passive voice. The reality. (Moaddab, 2014 , p.1413)
Recently, language teachers have been concerned about the level of students' attention to grammar comprehension.
This study examined how learning
Passive voice in various tenses was
Impacted by both form-focused and form-focused approaches. 56 intermediate-level adult EFL learners took part in
this quasi-experimental study. Participants in one group received form instruction on passive voices in various tenses
following the pre-test administered to both groups, while those in the second group received form teaching
approaches. Following treatment, a post-test was administered to both groups. The ANCOVA test findings showed
a significant difference between the two groups, with the emphasis on forms group learning the passive voice in
various tenses more effectively .(Nourdad, 2014 ,p. )
1_2 Definition of passive voice
It is a verb in which the subject is affected by the action of the verb.
In other words, the form of a verb in which the subject of the sentence has an action done to it by someone or
something action
In passive voice, the subject is acted upon.
The passive voice emphasizes the receiver of the action.
Passive voice is the indirect writing style, which means the subject receives the verb's action.
Important Note – The object of the active voice becomes the subject in the passive voice.
Example and explanation:
The work was finished by theme
[subject "work", passive verb "was finished", object – "them"]
In this example, the subject (work) is not the doer; it is being acted upon by the doer 'them'). (Joshi,2014, p. )
1_3 The form of passive voice
The most prevalent English expression style is the active voice, which is typically used when the "agent or doer of
the action is the focal point.(Mathieson, 2017,p. 3)
For instance:
(The boy painted a painting).
(Students practice the teachings on a regular basis).
Since their subjects, "A picture" and "The teachings," do not do the action but rather "receive the action done by
their agents, "kid" and "students," respectively, the verbs "was painted" and "are practised" are in the passive voice
in this instance. A verb's "voice" indicates whether the subject "does something" or gets something done to it.(
Anthony, 2014 ,p. 132)
