READING
7 Read the article and match sentences A–E to gaps 1–4 in the text. There is one extra sentence.
Violence in entertainment
It’s been an exhausting day, and now it’s time to relax and watch TV. You turn on your favourite channel –
a person is being stabbed and there is blood everywhere. No, thanks! You try the next channel and you are
confronted with gunshots, an explosion and a horrific car crash, all in less than 15 seconds. Again, no, thank
you! 1 ___ Fights, killings, stabbings, all created, rehearsed and filmed for our so-called entertainment.
And the TV studios have been told that unless the next season includes even more intense, terrifying,
fictionalised violence, people won’t watch the programme. As adults, we can differentiate between reality
and fantasy; however, young children cannot tell the difference so easily and the impact of seeing so much
violence can be stressful and traumatic.
The violence in on-screen entertainment is overwhelming. 2 ___ Even ‘amusing’ cartoons can include up to
25 violent acts in one hour. A cute animation may seem entertaining and all the kicking and beating and
punching seem harmless, but to a child, cartoon characters are not make-believe – they are real. Weapons are
featured in television programmes approximately nine times per hour, which means that a child watching TV
for three hours could encounter these nearly 30 times in just one evening.
For tired parents or caregivers, TV is a wonderful babysitter. A child sitting silently in front of a screen creates
instant peace and calm. However, this state of peacefulness may be a temporary illusion. Research suggests
that, for a child, exposure to violence on TV might be associated with an increase in fear, anxiety, nightmares,
sleep disturbances and depression. 3 ___ This is hardly surprising given that the fictional hero or heroine – the
‘good guy’ – on TV is praised or rewarded for dealing with a problematic situation through acts of violence.
Child psychologists recommend that children under two should not watch screens at all and that very young
children should be limited to two hours a day. Some research indicates that the number of hours a person
watches TV is strongly associated with aggressive behaviour later on in life. 4 ___ Although it is not possible
to prove that watching violence on TV directly causes an individual to behave aggressively, perhaps it is time
for TV producers to be more concerned with a child’s healthy development than with profits. Combined
with greater parental involvement in a child’s viewing behaviour, this might help to reduce violence, bullying
and depression, which seem to be increasingly present in the lives of young people.
A Research suggests that in the USA, the average person will have viewed over 200,000 acts of violence on TV
by the time they are eighteen.
B And there should be no television or video games before school, during meals, or before homework is done.
C A second effect may be an increase in anti-social, aggressive behaviour and even bullying.
D Children who watch TV for more than three hours per day are at greater risk of criminal convictions
and anti-social behaviour when they are older.
E A third channel shows knights heroically attacking their enemies.
