area,after Alaska,and the largest state
within contiguous United States,at

the 39th-largest.It ranks 26th
worldwide amongst country
subdivizions by size.
Texas is in the south central part of the
United States. The Rio Grande forms a
natural border with the Mexican states
of Chihuaha, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon,

Climate
•The large size of Texas and its location at the intersection of
multiple climate zones gives the state highly variable weather.
The Panhandle of the state has colder winters than North Texas, while
the Gulf Coast has mild winters. Texas has wide variations in
precipitation patterns. El Paso, on the western end of the state,
averages 8.7 inches (220 mm) of annual rainfall,]while parts of southeast
Texas average as much as 64 inches (1,600 mm) per year. Dallas in the
North Central region averages a more moderate 37 inches (940 mm) per
year.
•Snow falls multiple times each winter in the Panhandle and
mountainous areas of West Texas, once or twice a year in North Texas,
and once every few years in Central and East Texas. Snow falls south of
San Antonio or on the coast only in rare circumstances. Of note is
the 2004 Christmas Eve snowstorm, when 6 inches(150 mm) of snow
fell as far south as Kingsville, where the average high temperature in
December is 65 °F.
•Night-time summer temperatures range from the upper 50s °F (14 °C)
11/4/2024 in the West Texas mountains to 80 °F (27 °C) in Galveston. 3
Population
•Texas is the second-largest U.S. state in population,
after California. The state is also the most populous state
in the South Central United States, and the most
populous state in the South.Texas' population growth
between 2000 and 2010 represents the highest
population increase, by number of people, for any U.S.
state during this time period.
•At the 2020 Unitated States census it was reported
that Texas had a resident population of 29,145,505, a
15.9% increase since the2010 U.S census. Its
apportioned population in 2020 was 29,183,290.At the
2010 census, Texas had a population of 25.1 million—an
increase of 4.3 million since the year 2000, involving an
increase in population in all three subcategories of
population growth: natural increase (births minus
deaths), net immigration, and net migration. Texas
added almost 4 million people between the 2010 and

2020 census'.
Culture
•Texan culture is infamous for its highly confident
assertion that everything is bigger and better in Texas.
Texan bravado is certainly a real social characteristic,
but more entertaining than annoying. The folks who
live in the Lone Star State are extremely proud of their
land, and defend every aspect of it with borderline
ferocity. This probably stems from the fact that Texas
had to fight hard to gain every inch of its current
territory from Mexico.
•Cowboys make up a large part of Texan society, so it’s
hard to go anywhere in the state and not see cowboy
boots, hats, and rancher attitudes. Most bars play
country western music and most meals involve beef.
To a large degree, everything really is bigger in Texas,
which is what makes traveling here such fun. It’s a fun,
slightly rowdy, and very friendly state. Once you get
over the fact that Texans think they’re the best thing
since sliced bread, they’re a lot of fun. There’s also a
11/4/2024 very strong Hispanic presence in the state that adds a 5
welcome dose of ethnicity to the landscape.
