By 275 BC, the Romans in Italy had begun to expand out of Italy and conquered other parts of the
Mediterranean. They started with Sicily, an island near Italy. The Romans were fighting the Carthaginians.
Some of the Greeks decided to help the Carthaginians fight the Romans, because the Greeks were afraid of
the Romans but the Carthaginians lost. The Romans were very angry at the Greeks, and they began to take
Greece over as well.
At first, the Romans pretended to let Greece be independent, but by 146 BC, the Romans had destroyed
Corinth and made Greece into a province of the Roman Empire.
Greece did well under Roman rule, even though the Greeks were not very happy about it. Archaeology
shows that the Greeks built many new houses and buildings. They were able to sail and trade peacefully all
over the Mediterranean Sea, because the Romans ruled it all. The Romans ruled Greece for hundreds of
years.
The Romans thought Greek plays and Greek philosophy were very interesting, and many Greeks went to
Rome as teachers and entertainers. Many Romans came to Athens to go to the great colleges there,
Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum.
Around 200 AD, though, Germanic people began to invade Greece from the north, and the Roman army
couldn't always stop them. At first, these Germans didn't come very often, but by 400 AD they came more
often, and Greece became poorer again. As the Germans colonized the western half of the Roman Empire,
Greece came to be ruled by Constantinople.

From 1200 to 800 BC the Phoenicians lived and prospered in the Mediterranean coast north of Palestine.
Their chief cities were Tyr and Sidon. They gained fame as sailors and traders. They occupied a string of cities
along the Mediterranean coast, in what is today Lebanon.
The coastal land was fertile and supported farming. Still, the resourceful Phoenicians became best known
for manufacturing and trade. They made glass from coastal sand. From a tiny sea snail, they produced a
widely admired purple dye, called “Tyrian purple” after the city of Tyr, which became their trademark. It
became the favourite colour of royalty.
Phoenicians also used papyrus from Egypt to make rolls of paper, for books. The words bible and
bibliography come from the Phoenician city of Byblos. Phoenicians traded with peoples all around the
Mediterranean sea. To promote trade, they set up colonies from North Africa to Sicily and Spain.
Due to their sailing skills, the Phoenicians served as missionaries of civilization, bringing eastern
Mediterranean products and culture to less advanced people. A few Phoenicians traders braved the stormy
Atlantic and sailed as far as England. There, they exchanged goods from the Mediterranean for tin.
As merchants, the Phoenicians needed a simple alphabet to erase the burden of keeping records. They
therefore invented a phonetic alphabet consisting of 22 letters. After alterations by the Greeks and Romans,
this alphabet became the one we use today.

The name Mesopotamia (meaning "the land between the rivers″) refers to the geographic region which
lies near the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and not to any particular civilization. In fact, many civilizations
developed, collapsed, and were replaced in this fertile region. The land of Mesopotamia is made fertile by
the irregular and often violent flooding of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
Given the combination of fertile soil and the need for organized human labor, perhaps it is not
surprising that the first civilization developed in Mesopotamia. By 3500 BC, the Sumerians had built towns
and cities, and an early form of pictographic writing was used, metal working had begun, and temples were
built on a monumental scale.
Generally speaking, however, true civilization is said to have begun around 3100 BC with the
development of cuneiform writing. After its development, cuneiform became the dominant system of
writing in Mesopotamia for over 2000 years. Even after Sumerian became dead as a spoken language,
many other Near Eastern cultures continued to write using cuneiform. As a result of its extensive use of
several centuries, many cuneiform tablets have survived. These tablets provide historians with information

A/Comprehension:

Sparta was one of the most important cities in Ancient Greece and it was a very different kind of
city state. The life of the people of Sparta was a very strict one, similar to the military. The Spartans were
proud, fierce and capable warriors. Young boys were taken from their homes at an early age to begin
military training. Young girls were forced to maintain a healthy way of life in order to produce healthy
children and were sent to school to learn how to fight and to become soldiers, too.
Most Spartan citizens were either Perioeci (citizens who paid taxes, served in the army and were
protected by Spartan laws) or Helots (people from lands conquered and ruled by Sparta who had no
rights). Spartan citizens were given land which was farmed for them by the Helots. The Helots were
treated as slaves and had to give half their crops to their Spartan master. It was a common belief that the
Helots were public property. They were seen as the enemy even though they were actually slaves. The
Helots sweated in the fields, but their resentment grew. Finally, they rose up and fought their Spartan
masters and the fighting continued for many years. But the Spartans eventually gained victory and so
became more powerful.
The Spartans became wealthy through trading in luxury goods of gold, silver and other materials.
Besides, they produced beautiful things as their wealth increased. Ivory carvings were desired across
Greek lands, bronze-work and pottery were exported to Italy.

Athenians thought of themselves as the shining star of the Greek city-states. They were famous
for their literature, poetry, drama, theatre, schools, buildings, and government. Before the Greek dark
ages, Athens was a small village and developed rapidly until it became one of the two most powerful
city-states in the ancient Greek world.
The Greeks believed that each city-state in ancient Greece had a god or a goddess in charge of it,
their special patron. For Athens, the patron was Athena, goddess of wisdom. Perhaps because Athena
was their patron, Athenians put a great deal of emphasis on education.
Girls learned at home from their mothers to run a home, and to be good wives and mothers.
While boys were educated quite differently; until the age of 7, they were taught at home by their
mothers then attended a day school outside the home from 7 to 14. There, they memorized Homeric
poetry and learned to play the lyre. They learned drama, public speaking, reading, writing, math, and
perhaps even how to play the flute. After middle-school, they went to a four year high-school and
learned more about math, science, and government. At the age of 18, they attended two years of
military school. This is why Athens was proud of its system of education.
