Issues related with quality of drinking water. NBC norms for scales of drinking
water supply for various institutes, urban and rural areas. Water borne diseases
and need for safe drinking water.
Module 2: Drinking Water Specifications (2-3 Lectures)
Specifications of drinking water as per BIS 10500 norms. Comparison with
recommendations of WHO. Understanding bottled water specifications.

Module 3: Intake structures for raw water (2-3 Lectures)


Planning of Intake structures in rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Ground water
resources and wells. Rainwater harvesting for drinking water.

Module 4: Water treatment Practices (13 - 15 Lectures)


Understanding various units of WTP
Designs of Screens and Gravity Sedimentation,
Various aeration techniques for removal of gases and taste enhancement
Coagulation and flocculation for removal of colloidal impurities
Filtration techniques using Rapid sand, slow sand and pressure filters.
Ion exchange and chemical softening of water.
Adsorption for polishing treatment of water
Practices of disinfection of water using various chemicals and radiations
Specific treatments for removal of Nitrates, Arsenic and Fluoride.
Assessment of various treatment techniques for removal of toxins.
Module 5: Use of Membranes and RO for Water Treatment (2 -3 Lectures)
Pre-treatment of raw water for high quality water.
RO and membrane systems for public and domestic use.
Module 6: Layouts of WTP and Quality Control (3 -4 Lectures)
Layouts of various units for efficient working
Monitoring of Quality at plant and at user end.
Distribution of water and Provisions of NBC
In situ Testing of Quality of drinking water.
