CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

This section presents the background of the study, statement of the

problem, the scope and delimitation of the study, and its significance, which

discusses the benefits and beneficiaries of the study.

Background of the Study

Poverty is the absence of basic life needs, such as food, shelter, clothing,

and safe drinking water, which are essential for physical, social, and emotional

well-being. People living in poverty face difficulties in achieving these needs due

to their low incomes, which affects their health, hunger, and education. Poverty is

a global issue that is not only an economic problem but also a human condition,

cultural, political, and emotional problem. It is characterized by hopelessness,

disappointment, and suffering, often resulting in extreme poverty.

Defining poverty is challenging, but identifying its root is not difficult.

Addressing poverty is crucial as it can worsen over time, impacting education and

the lives of those without a wealthy family. Many struggle financially, as their

parents may not have stable jobs, limiting their ability to complete their education.

It is essential to understand the root of poverty and care about it to address

it effectively. It is crucial to address the issue of poverty and work towards a more

equitable society. By doing so, we can work towards a more equitable and

sustainable future for all.

2

Poverty significantly impacts a child's education, as it prevents them from

pursuing their rights to education. Children with anxious and indifferent

personalities often exhibit bad behavior both at home and in school. Socialization

and social status also significantly affect their behavior. Children raised in poverty

often do not behave differently, but face daily challenges that affluent children do

not face. Their brains adapt to suboptimal conditions, which undermines good

school performance. Studies show that poor children from financially

disadvantaged homes begin school academically and behaviorally behind their

more affluent peers, and this gap continues to widen over the years. Parental

involvement is also studied to help aid academic achievements. Many students

struggle academically and have less parental support than their financially stable

peers, leading to out-of-school youth. Poverty also causes low confidence due to

family status, leading to racism and a lack of confidence in children.

Adolescent psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, and behavioral

issues, can be exacerbated by low socioeconomic status. Students coping with

poverty often face humiliation and embarrassment due to their appearance,

clothing, and personal hygiene. However, poverty is not an obstacle; each child

has the right to receive good education provided by the government. The

government offers educational programs, feeding programs, budgets, and

scholarship programs to qualified poor students. Local Government Units (LGUs)

and private sector organizations also help poor students achieve their dreams.

Muhammad Yunus (2006) believes that creating a world free from poverty is

possible if people are given the same opportunities as those afforded to non-poor
3

people. This research aims to educate adolescents that poverty is not a hindrance

to success in life and encourages them to pursue their studies despite their family

status. By sharing this information, it aims to inspire action against poverty and

encourage people to take action against this issue. Poverty is not a reason, but an

inspiration to grow.

Statement of the Problem

This study focuses on what are the effects of poverty to the academic

performance of students. It specific aimed to determine the following:

1. Demographic profile of the students in Ronar Academia de Gerona Inc is

Review of Related Literature and Studies

The literature and studies cited in this chapter tackle the related effects of

poverty to the academic performance of the students. Those provided in this

chapter assist familiarize readers with information pertinent to and similar to the

current study.

Related Literature

According to the definition of Chen (2024), Poverty is the condition or state

in which people or groups lack the funds and other essentials for a subsistence

level of living. People are unable to meet their most basic necessities as a result.

Poverty-stricken families and people might not have access to sanitary toilets,

nutritious food, clean water, or medical treatment. Poverty is a socioeconomic

condition that arises from multiple factors, not alone from an individual's money.

Every nation may have its own criteria for determining the poverty line and the

percentage of its people who live below it. These factors include, but are not

restricted to, racial identification, sexual orientation, and sexual identity and access

to education.

According to Nextstepph (2020), In most of these low-income houses, only

around 60% of the family members have completed elementary school. As a result,

approximately 18.4 million Filipinos survive on an average daily budget of $1.25

and live in abject poverty. An typical Filipino family has two stunted children out of

six. This is most likely the effect of malnutrition. According to medical authorities,
7

children who are malnourished for the first 1000 days of their lives do not fully

establish their brain's neuronal connections. This can be a major barrier since it

keeps the kids from reaching their maximum potential, which lowers their chances

of getting a good education.

According to the definition of Rueckert (2019) Lack of funds for education

Since developing countries cannot afford to pay for their own education, more

international assistance is needed. Only 20% of international aid for education

goes to low-income countries, according to the Global Partnership for Education

(GPE). But in poor countries, a 13-year education costs an average of $1.25 per

day every child.

Having a teacher with little experience or none at all There aren't enough

teachers to give every student access to elementary and secondary education.

Furthermore, a significant portion of today's professors are untrained. As a result,

kids aren't receiving a quality education. Thirty-one million students are enrolled in

school but still struggle with basic topics like math, reading, and writing.

No classroom: A child cannot study in an unsuitable environment. Children

in many sub-Saharan African nations are frequently forced to learn outside or in

overcrowded, dilapidated classrooms. They also lack the educational supplies,

textbooks, and other resources they require to succeed.

A lack of learning materials Six or more pupils share tattered textbooks in various

parts of the world. In Tanzania, for example, only 3.5 percent of sixth graders

utilized a textbook exclusively. In Cameroon, there are thirteen textbooks for

second-grade maths and eleven for reading for every textbook used in primary
8

school. Workbooks, exercise sheets, readers, and other crucial tools that help

pupils comprehend their lessons are hard to come by. Teachers also need

materials in order to prepare classes, share them with students, and offer

guidance.

According to Sanchez, (2021) Fortunately, the damaging consequences of

poverty on the brain can be lessened or even reversed by compassionate

educators. These three strategies seek to enhance the innate abilities of low-

income pupils in empathy, social behavior, and self-control.

According to Compassion (N.D) Inequalities in educational achievement are

exacerbated by poverty. Children who experience it do poorly academically and

have more difficulty finding employment as adults. It limits educational

opportunities and deprives underprivileged children of resources; as a result, they

are much less likely than their peers to attend school.

Imagine you had two children, one born in 2000 in a country with very high

human development and the other in a country with low development. At the

moment, the first has a better than 50/50 chance of going to college: about half of

20-year-olds are enrolled in college in countries with exceptionally high levels of

human development. The likelihood of the second person remaining alive is

significantly smaller. Approximately 1 percent of children born in highly developed

countries will have died before turning 20 in 2000, compared to 17 percent of

children born in low-developed countries. Additionally, there is little chance that the

second child will go to college: only 3% of students in countries with poor human

developmentEven the poorest children who attend school experience greater

9

difficulties developing cognitively and intellectuallyplanets

Living conditions that include poor housinghomelessness, insufficient or nonexist

ent access to healthcare, inadequate nutrition, and hunger can hinder a child's ph

ysical and cognitive development.Stunting, wasting, and childhood disorders are

also caused by these circumstances.

According to Burns, (2019) is impairing kids' ability to learn, and it's getting

worse, according to a teacher poll.

According to the National Education Union (NEU), students who come to school

hungry from crowded, loud homes where they can't sleep well find it difficult to

learn. One teacher told NEU researchers, "I try to teach my phonics group as I am

giving others cereal to eat. According to ministers, fewer people live in "absolute"

poverty, employment is at a record high, and earnings are growing faster than

inflation. However, the NEU claims that anecdotal data from its members indicates

that the number of impoverished families is rising.

For teachers in state schools, the percentages increased to 52% and 97%.

Overall, according to half of the responding teachers, student poverty has One

teacher told the researchers, "There's no denying that the gap in poverty has

widened." Many of my students have trouble sleeping because they live in

overcrowded apartments where they share rooms with young children or infants.

"One child has been referred to the school wellbeing team due to anxiety about

their family's financial situation," stated another.

Approximately 75% of parents attributed their children's poor behavior, inability to

10

focus, and tendency to nod off during class to poverty.

Over half of the teachers said that their students had gone hungry or ill as a result

of their poverty, and over a third reported that kids were occasionally teased for

their financial situation.

According to Oriaki et. al. (2015) The primary goal of this study is to provide

insight on the relationship between student conduct and academic achievement

and poverty. Thus, poverty was defined as the absence of a standard or socially

acceptable amount of money or other belongings. A person is said to be in poverty

if they are unable to meet their basic necessities. Poverty can take many different

forms, including situational, generational, absolute, relative, urban, and rural

poverty. As a result, it was established that incidental, historical, political,

international, social, individual, demographic, geographic, and environmental

factors all contributed to poverty. Consequently, it was proposed that mental and

emotional challenges, including short- and long-term pressures, cognitive

impairments, and concerns about safety and health are risk factors for

poverty.academic achievement of students.

According to Jackson et. al. (2018) This quantitative descriptive study set

out to investigate the connection between student achievement, school variables,

and poverty. This study investigates whether these attributes account for
11

differences in student accomplishment improvements among MCPS schools,

building on previous research on the student and school variables that affect

student success gains. The information provided in this report can be used by

district and school administrators to pinpoint areas that require more focus in order

to raise student achievement and guarantee equitable access for everyone.

According to Dweck (2016) In this study, we examine the systemic

interactions between these variables using a national sample of Chilean high

school students. We find that family income is a substantial predictor of success,

which is consistent with previous findings. Building on earlier studies, we

demonstrate that a growth mindset—the conviction that intellect is not fixed but

rather can be developed—is a relatively significant predictor of accomplishment

and that it positively correlates with achievement in all socioeconomic categories

in the nation. Furthermore, we find that while students from wealthier families were

more likely than their peers from lower-income families to have a growth mindset,

those who did not were notably shielded from the detrimental effects of poverty on

achievement: growth-minded students who were in the lowest 10th percentile of

family income showed academic performance comparable to that of fixed-mindset

students from the 80th income percentile. These results suggest that students'

mindsets may, on a systemic level, either exacerbate or lessen the effects of

economic adversity exacerbate the effects of economic disadvantage on a

systemic level.

According to khalid et. al (2023), One of the most fundamental and obvious

human rights that any country upholds is the right to education. However, poverty
12

has made it difficult for the majority of people to achieve this fundamental right.

Goal: To determine how poverty affects girls' secondary school academic

performance. One hundred students from schools in Pakistan's District Faisalabad

participated in a cross-sectional study. For this study, a multi-section survey

questionnaire that was self-designed is i.e. Information about the age, sex, wealth,

and level of education of the family. Version 22.0 of SPSS was used to investigate

the data that had been gathered.

According to Hadna & Kartika (2016), The purpose of this research is to

investigate how Indonesia's Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH) affects the

academic performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds in

elementary and junior high school. RCTs, or randomized controlled trials, provided

guidance for the design of this impact assessment. Over 3,360 communities

participated in panel surveys conducted in six provinces between 2007 and 2013,

which provided the data. Junior high school students' net enrolment rate climbed

by 7.1% and their gross participation rate increased by 7.6%, according an

assessment of the PKH. However, the gross participation rate and primary school

enrolment have not yet increased noticeably as a result of PKH. PKH significantly

increases elementary school attendance rates, however it doesn't significantly

impacton junior high school attendance.

Local

According to Alcuizar (2016), The goal of this study is to identify the

important variables that influence the low academic performance of students in

barangays located in highland areas. The study examined the relevant literature
13

with an emphasis on the relationship between the determinants of nutrition, family

living situations, parental support for their offspring, and school-related issues.

These elements constructed an analytical model of the factors that contribute to

students' poor academic performance in an effort to obtain insightful knowledge

about the significance of these aspects. According to the study's findings, the most

closely linked variables that were looked into and had a major impact on the poor

academic performance of the students in Rogongon, Iligan City, Philippines, were

the determinants of nutrition and living conditions. Given their substandard living

conditions and the distance between the school and their home, parents in upland

barangays and rural sections of the city have not prioritized their children's

education. Additionally, local governments in rural areas provide less funding to

schools for teacher training and instructional supplies. As a result, both the

students' academic achievement in the area and their National Achievement Test,

or NAT, scores are low.

According to Figeuroa (2018), The purpose of this study is to ascertain how

physical urban settings affect academic achievement in urban public elementary

schools in the Philippines by looking at the physical surrounds of school buildings

and slum regions. Global, local, and semi-parametric regression models show that

government schools receive comparatively more funding than other types of

educational institutions and that lower academic achievement is associated with

lower funding. clinics rather than being near impoverished communities. The semi-

parametric regression model outperformed global and local modeling and

estimated up to 30% of the variation in math scores when it was based on the
14

number of teachers and rooms in each school, the state of the buildings, the

presence of health clinics, and the location of slum areas close to the school.

According to Lastimosa et. al (2023), This study presented a meta-synthesis

of the negative effects of poverty on academic achievement in special needs

children in the Philippines. Fifteen of the first four hundred studies that the

Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis reviewed between

2013 and 2021 were used in this analysis. After applying Clark and Braune's six-

step thematic analysis and conducting frequent comparisons, seven themes came

to light: low societal expectations, minimal parental involvement in their children's

special education, disruptive behavior and attention deficits, long-term stress,

subpar academic performance and attainment, and dropping out of school.

According to Peneda et. al (2023), Most of what students know is taught to

them in school. However, some children face difficulties in their learning that the

teachers are unable to sufficiently address. The aim of this research is to identify

and explore the factors affecting the academic performance of ten (10) Grade Five

students enrolled in the Leyte Normal University-Integrated Laboratory School.

The study participants were chosen via purposeful sampling as part of a qualitative

single-case study methodology. The top five (5) students in the low-performing

group and the top five (5) students in the high-performing group were selected

during that process.

According to Nadia (2021), Events on the ground indicate that reading is a

crucial part of being proficient in English. For students, reading fluency is crucial

because it helps them understand what they read. The aim of this study was to
15

determine the causes of the difficulties children face when learning to read and to

find remedies for these problems. Research issues are resolved by descriptive

qualitative research. Questionnaires are used to identify the main reason behind

the students' reading difficulties, and tests are utilized to examine the concerns

brought up by the students during the reading assessment.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, the sources of data which

includes the locale of the study and the research population, instrumentation and

data collection, and the tools for data analysis.

Research Design

This study will utilize a phenomenology method of research use of an

interview as the data gathering instrument in line with the students of Ronar

Academia De Gerona. The students will be assessed, the challenges they

encounter with the effects of poverty to their academic performance will be

determine, the academic projects we can be recommended to help lessen the

effect of poverty on students' academic performance.

Phenomenological research is a qualitative research approach that seeks

to understand and describe the universal essence of a phenomenon. The

approach investigates the everyday experiences of human beings while

suspending the researchers’ preconceived assumptions about the phenomenon.

In other words, phenomenological research studies lived experiences to gain

deeper insights into how people understand those experiences.

Respondents and Sampling of the Study

Purposive sampling is a non-probability technique where researchers select

particular volunteers who will aid the study in achieving its objectives by using their

experience. The researchers must consider these participants' unique traits when
18

assessing their research question. Stated differently, the subjects are chosen by

the researchers "on purpose.

This study will focus on 10 respondents including students in Ronar

Academia de Gerona. This method will meticulously guarantee that each student

in the Ronar Academia de Gerona Inc is afforded an equitable opportunity for

consideration in the study. This strategic approach not only upholds principles of

fairness but also ensures a comprehensive representation of diverse perspectives,

thereby augmenting the study's depth and overall relevance in a professional

manner.

CHAPTER IV

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents how the researchers completed the process of

bracketing, horizonalization, Theme clustering, constructing the textural and

structural descriptions, writing the overall essence, and verification of the lived

experiences of the participants of this study

QUESTIONS:

1) What are the following factors do you think contribute to the poverty faced by the

students?

1.1 How does it affects the financial status of the student

2) What challenges does you experience while facing poverty that affecting your

academic performance?

2.1 What are the effects of that challenges In your academic performance?

2.2 What’s the specific reason do you face that challenges in your life?

3) What do you think the effects of poverty to your studies?

3.1 Why is it affecting you academic performance?

3.2 What is the reasons why poverty affects your academic performance?

4) How did you cope up with your problems relating to poverty to avoid it affecting

your academic performance?

4.1. Why did you need to do that in order to avoid the effects of poverty?
21

Root of Poverty.

The students who is facing poverty is having a hard times causing by it. it is

parents job to provide for their children but how will they provide their need if the

parents do not have the power to provide for their children.

The students who’s facing poverty stated that the factors contributing to

their problem is having parents who is unemployed and doesn’t have any source

of income to support their needs.

1. Unemployed parents, of course kapag walang work ang parents if hirap sila,

mas mahirap nanaman sa isang student. It can cause stress to both of the parents

and students.

2. Problema ko wala kaming pera walang source of income

3. Walang trabaho ang magulang ko.

Oriaki et. al. (2015) poverty was defined as the absence of a standard or

socially acceptable amount of money or other belongings. A person is said to be

in poverty if they are unable to meet their basic necessities.

Life Challenges

According to the statement of the students and the poverty is leading

them to lost their focus on their academics because instead on focusing on their

problems at school they are focusing other aspects of problems that they are

dealing on their life Like their school expenses, bills, and how are they going to

budget their allowances.

22

Some of them stated that they are having a hard time on focusing because

they have empty stomach leading for them to lost track on the discussion.

1. I do experience such things like losing track on the topic, but I do experience

struggles because of lack of allowance, hindi naman sa lack of allowance it’s just

mahirap tipirin ang whole week or month allowance.

2) Hindi maka focus sa acads dahil sa iniisip na gastusin sa school.

3) D ako maka focus kasi minsan wala akong baon pang gastos

4)Di ako maka focus dahil sa hirap nga kami pwede kaming magutom di den nmn

araw² ay may pabaon samin

According to Burns, (2019) is impairing kids' ability to learn, and it's getting

worse, according to a teacher poll.

According to the National Education Union (NEU), students who come to school

hungry from crowded, loud homes where they can't sleep well find it difficult to

learn.

Poverty to The Student Academic Performance

According to the Statement of the student poverty is affecting their

academic performance in a way that they got stressed because they can’t afford

what they needed in order to do their activities that affects their academic

performance.
23

It’s stated that because they can’t afford their school needs that’s what is

their stress came from and affecting their focus on their academics. Instead of

giving all of their attention to their academic performance they just get distracted

that something they can’t afford will affect not only just their grades but their overall

performance.

kong for academics nadadala ko sa bahay nalang.

3.Siguro. Dahil dko din masasabi na nagagawa ko ang mga dapat gawin sa school

dahil sobrang mamahal na ng mga bilihin .

4. Yes,dahil hindi ako maka focus sa acads dahil iniisip q rin ang gastos sa

bahay/school.

According to Alcuizar (2016), The goal of this study is to identify the

important variables that influence the low academic performance of students in

barangays located in highland areas. The study examined the relevant literature

with an emphasis on the relationship between the determinants of nutrition, family

living situations, parental support for their offspring, and school-related issues.

These elements constructed an analytical model of the factors that contribute to

24

students' poor academic performance in an effort to obtain insightful knowledge

about the significance of these aspects.

Coping Strategy to succeed

According to the students the coping mechanism in order to overcome the

problem and challenges they are facing is to save money that when you need it

you have something to get and to get a part time side hustle in order to support

their need

The respondents knew that it would be hard for the part of them to school

while working but the respondents stated that it is the only way they could think of

to support their expenses.

This only shows that in the students are exposed to the harsh reality that and chose

to do something about it.

1) ang ginagawa ko ngayon is meron akongg sideline na nagiging source of

income ko narin para kapag may bayarin ako na lang yung sumasalo non tsaka

pag may biglaang gastusin meron akong bubunutin,

25

Carney (2016) The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship

between part time working, mental and physical health and academic

performance. Fifty per cent of the undergraduate full time respondents had part

time jobs. Mean pay per hour was £4.25 and mean number of hours worked was

14 hours. When the current state of students' health was compared to the sex‐ and

age‐related norms for the general population, it showed that seven of the eight

areas of health measured were significantly poorer than those of the general

population.
26

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

The research summary, recommendations, and conclusions for the full study are

shown/presented in this chapter. The summary highlights the findings of the study without

going into great depth. In addition, the researchers’ advice to study’s beneficiaries,

Findings of the study are the focus of this chapter.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

1. Root of Poverty

2. Life Challenges

3. Poverty to The Student Academic Performance

4. Coping Strategy of the Students

The main factors that contributing to the poverty faced by the

students is their parents having no stable source of income/jobless that will give

them a hard time to source out the money they need in order to buy something

when they need it to support their academics and having a not enough allowances

to support their daily expenses in order to have a good quality of educational

support.

The main challenges faced by the respondents on the effects of

poverty to their academic performance is having a hard times focusing on their

studies because the students have a problems that messing with their minds and
27

the stress they are facing that sum upith the distraction they are experiencing.

Although being distracted is the main thing they are dealing with the researchers

found out that one of the causes behind it is having an empty stomach that lead to

the subjects having a hard time focusing on their studies.

The main impact of poverty to their school performance is having a bad

grade on a certain subjects or having a hard time understanding the lesson and

coping up in the discussion but the main reason behind that is because the student

isn’t having enough money to buy what they need to support their academics.
