Introduction
I had no previous expert knowledge of dice manipulation or
gambling sleights with dice. I just had an objective. That was to
do a multiple dice reading with three dice to create a solid routine
that continually became more impossible in every phase. I had
some technical issues with some expensive electronic dice and I
wanted a bulletproof, straightforward and very simple method to
produce the same e ect without the worry of electronics,
charging of batteries, etc.
In all of the magic I choose to perform, the objective is to work
free of anxiety and to focus on my connection with an audience,
on my delivery of a presentation and being in the present
moment. So it became obvious that using a set of forcing dice
and some clever switching of these dice with regular ones to
accomplish these goals. The fruit of that labor is what you are
privy to now in this booklet. I hope it serves you well as a tool to
further your performing goals as well.
This PDF booklet of scripts is for reference and inspiration only. It
does not detail the method or physical actions. Refer to the
included instructional video (links provided in this PDF) for all of
those details. With your purchase of Dicey please feel free to use
these plots, themes and scripts for any live, televised or online
performances.
Enjoy!

The Dicey Original Routine - The One Die Switch
This was the rst routine I developed using forcing dice and the
most used in actual live performances than any other routine in
this booklet. It was the handling featured in my Penguin Lecture
which was nominated for lecture of the year! One of the practical
things, from a working point of view, is that all the dice used are
inside the cup with the lid on the cup ready to perform at a
moments notice. No other moving parts and nothing needs to be
in a pocket before the routine begins, so literally no pre-show
set-up other than the dice in the cup etc.
The live performance and all the details are featured in the Dicey
instructional video links and chapters found on page 4.
Tossed Dice Routine - The Three for Three Switch
Once I started performing the original dicey routine above I
realized that I could involve more audience members, always
something I strive to do, and also have each participant inspect
one of the three dice. This involves the simple but deceptive Juan
Tamariz’s Crossing the Gaze switch featured in his book The Five
Points in Magic written in 1988 and originally published by
Frakson. This routine can play big if you bring the three
spectators onstage for the routine and has the potential to be a
real show piece in your performances.
The live performance and all the details are featured in the Dicey
instructional video links and chapters found on page 4.

Tossed Out Dice - David Hoy Style
David Hoy published the Tossed Out Deck in his book The Bold
and Subtle Miracles of Dr. Faust in 1963. In the classic e ect a
deck of cards, held together by a rubber band, is tossed out to
three di erent audience members for them each to peek at a
random card. After this the magician/mentalist then names all the
cards selected. In Hoy's method and presentation a clever
psychological ploy creates conviction that the three spectators
are each thinking of separate cards and that the performer
correctly names each card. Using either the original Dicey - One
Die Switch or the Three for Three Dice Switch detailed in the
instructional video, you have the dice “inspected”, placed in the
co ee cup with the cup secured on top. Now hand the cup to
someone on the far left of the audience to give the dice and
shake and to lift the lid, and so no one else can see, peek at and
remember one of the three numbers on the top of the dice.
Placing the lid back on the cup, that spectator can walk to
another spectator, preferably someone they don’t know, and
hand them the cup to repeat the same sequence. This is done
one nal time and the last participant can bring the cup back to
you onstage, at which point you can toss the cup into your prop
case out of sight. Now like the original Hoy routine you ask the
three spectators to stand where they are in the audience and
“read their minds” dramatically naming the three force dice
numbers. You ask the spectators to take a seat if you named
their thought of number, all three spectators will sit down creating
a dramatic conclusion to the e ect.

Nobrainer remains the most practical and hard hitting solo

sharpest of minds. Practical, bulletproof and plays big. Many top

Adding Dicey to your Nobrainer routine is…a no brainer! This
could also apply to any prediction type e ect you are currently
doing or would like to create for your show.
Without giving away too much, (out respect to the purchasers
and performers of Nobrainer) Nobrainer uses both real time info
that the audience creates spontaneously and also upon the
forcing of information. Using Dicey to reach a random dice roll of
three inspected dice is a perfect addition to any Nobrainer
     performance.
The casino routine entitled Sin City Jackpot, outlined in the
Nobrainer PDF and performed live in the instructional video, is a
tting place to use Dicey as part of the prediction revelations.
The routine involves audience members imagining a walk through
a casino and rolling dice, spinning a roulette wheel and then
physically tossing cards to the ground from a 52 card deck
ending up with a single choice. Every choice is shown to be
predicted 100%! Adding Dicey into this mix is the perfect
addition of another ‘physical’ choice made by the audience to
create another ‘random’ result - later predicted with complete
accuracy in the BIG nal revelation paper that was sealed in an
envelope from the beginning. Replacing the real time dice info
with the Dicey force allows you to add another real time
revelation. This could be as simple as a coin toss or as elaborate
as random Keno numbers audience members call out.

     Confabulation Addition
If you perform a standard confabulation routine, like the closer
used in the Pack Smart Play Anywhere 2 Supernatural Show
     found here: https://billabbottmagic.com/collections/frontpage/
     products/the-pack-smart-play-anywhere-supernatural-show
Dicey makes a great additional reveal.
Obviously you could simply have the three force numbers written
on the prediction note but it would be far more interesting to
make the numbers mean something. Perhaps it’s the total
amount in cash that you’ll be bringing on your dream vacation.
Maybe it could be the time you’re leaving on your trip. It could
be the number of miles/km you’re driving to get to your
destination, or even the house number of your destination.
With some brainstorming you could have the three force numbers
be almost anything that ts into the theme of your prediction!
     Time Force
If you want to force a time for any routine or prediction e ect
Dicey can do that with a little audience management and routine
direction from you the performer. Carry out the regular Dicey
handling up until the point where the spectator is handed the cup
to shake it and peek at the dice numbers.
Now the focus of the presentation will be on creating a very
speci c time of day using the random roll of these dice. To create
a matching time to your pre recorded prediction you’ll need to
direct the spectator to call out the numbers in a sequence that
will coincide with the order on your prediction. I do this by asking
the participant to call out the numbers from largest to smallest.
This guarantees my prediction will match the order of how the
force dice numbers are called out. Alternatively you could have
                                      8
fi
                   fi
                                                     ff
the numbers called out from smallest to largest. The key to
making this play will be your attitude towards the procedure. Just
act con dently and when you deliver the line about asking the
spectator to call the numbers out biggest to smallest (or vice
versa) make it sound like you just came up that idea right on the
spot. Like, “Hey Dave could you call out the top numbers of each
die out loud so we can all hear them, and hey why don’t you start
with the biggest number rst and end up with the smallest last.”
It would be best to have a pad or board to write the numbers
down as the spectator is calling them out, that way you can
easily create a visual reference for the “random” time that was
     just created, 6:32, or whatever.
     Magic Square Force
A wonderfully simple way to do a Magic Square routine is to
force a seemingly random number. Rather than using three dice,
use two to create a two digit number. Unlike a typical Magic
Square you can memorize or even pencil in the numbers ahead
of time as there is no equations or math to do during the
     performance.
In performance you would execute the same Dicey inspection
sequence as the original routine (except with two dice rather than
three) and have a spectator shake the cup and peek at the
numbers on the top of the two dice. To direct them to put the
numbers in the right sequence to match your magic square
outcome, simply say that the higher the number the harder it is
for you (or something similarly convincing) and that you’d like
them to create the highest two digit number using the two
numbers on top the dice inside the cup. So obviously the number
would be the two force numbers with the higher number rst and
the lower number second. And the routine would continue like
     any other magic square routine.

A good reference for a magic square is The Magic Book by Harry
Lorayne. His Instant Magic Square method is very simple and
                         direct.
                         Lucky Cut by Erick Olson
Bar, comedy and trade show magician Erick Olson has a
wonderful routine using Dicey and a deck of cards that can work
either as a mind reading feat or as a skillful card manipulation/
                         gambling demonstration.
The e ect is that you have a spectator shake three dice in a
co ee cup to get three random numbers. You then shu e and
cut a deck into three piles. The top dice numbers are called out
and you turn over the three top playing cards on each pile and
the values on the cards match the three dice values in the cup.
To prepare you place three playing cards that match the three
forcing dice values on top of the deck. Prep the dice and cup as
shown on the Dicey video instructional for either the original
handling or one of the full dice switches and you’re ready to go.
Have a spectator “inspect” and shake the three dice in the cup
with their hand on top so you can’t see. While they shake the
dice you can false shu e the deck maintaining the top three
cards on the top of the deck. Perform a version of a ri e force by
holding the deck in your left hand as you ri e the edge of the
cards with your thumb along the side of the deck. Get about two
thirds of the way down the cards and stop. Now you’re going to
slip cut the top card of the deck onto the lower half of the deck
(the one third left of the deck) by holding the top card with left
your ngers while pulling out the top two thirds of the deck with
the ngers and thumb of your right hand. This should be one
uid move and one you don’t give conscious attention to in
performance. Once executed one of the top cards should now be

on top of the cards in your left hand which you now place on a
table top or in the hands of a second spectator if you don’t have
a surface to place them. Now you repeat the same maneuver
with the cards you have left, creating a second pile of cards with
one of the top cards on top of this second pile which you can
place on a table or into a third spectators hands. The cards left
are all ready to reveal the third card that’s now on top of the last
pile. Hand that to a fourth spectator or just place it on the table.
Now the person with the cup and dice lift their hand o the top of
the cup and call out the top numbers. You then dramatically turn
over the top cards of each of the three piles, or have the
spectators who are holding the piles of cards so this, and you
come to the mind blowing conclusion.
This could either be a mind reading demonstration where you
have the spectator peek at and remember the numbers. Or as a
suspense- lled demonstration of chance and skill where the dice
numbers are a mystery to everyone until the very end when the
spectators hand is lifted from the cup and the numbers are
called out only to match the cut to cards on all three piles.
Starbucks Cup Prediction by T.C. Tahoe
A fun way to reveal a surprise prediction after reading the
spectators tells in the original Dicey routine is to have the three
dice numbers written on the side of the cup Sharpie marker
under your name like the baristas do in most co ee shops. This
could be performed as an after thought after the performance of
the regular routine. “Hey wait a minute, the dice numbers you
rolled were 6, 3 and 2? That was my order number at the co ee
shop this morning!” Now dramatically reveal the three numbers
written in indelible marker on the side of the cup.

Spectator As The Mind Reader by Anton James
A fun twist in the usual mystery show is, rather than read the
minds of your audience, have an audience member read their
minds instead! Perform the Original Dicey Routine with either the
One Die Switch or the Three for Three Switch but rather than
“read” the tells or the minds of the three participants have a
fourth spectator come to the stage to do the job! You will need to
devise a way to secretly cue the spectator. This could be as easy
as placing your right hand on their left shoulder blade while you
ask them to turn and face the rst participant in the audience.
Keeping your hand in place on their shoulder blade, out of sight
from the audience, ask them to concentrate on the participant in
the audience and see if they sense a reaction from any of the
numbers as you call them out. Now count slowly from one to six
and gently tap their back with the fore nger of your right hand on
the number you know the spectator is thinking of (the force
number). This cueing has to be direct enough that the spectator
involved will have a clear idea of what number you are
communicating to them, yet subtle enough that they don’t jump
out of their skin when you tap them giving away the game
entirely. The audience impact of this type of routine has always
been very strong and most everyone I’ve made the “mind reader”
has kept the secret of the thing even years later when I’ve met
them again.
One Ahead - Mental Epic Finale
Dicey makes a great solution to the nal force needed to facilitate
a one ahead or classic mental epic routine. Traditionally
performers force a playing card, which is usually anti-climactic,
uncreative and turns a powerful mental e ect into yet another
card trick. Use any of the methods detailed in the instructional
                                         12

video to have three dice inspected, switched for the force dice
and inevitably placed in the cup. Have an audience member
shake the cup, stop and then call out the three numbers from
highest to lowest that are on the top of the dice. Knowing what
the numbers will be beforehand makes predicting them in the
secret square on your mental epic board or previously written for
a one ahead revelation.
Add It Up
One little wrinkle to add to your arsenal of possibilities is to use
the total of the dice as part of a prediction, a magic square, a
mind reading demonstration, etc. my personal preference would
be to add it to the regular Dicey reading routine by having the
spectator add the numbers together and think of the total.
This adds more bang for your buck, essentially a fourth phase to
the routine and more opportunity to get creative with the concept
of poker tells, direct mind reading, or whatever your choice of
premise is.
