Andy Slaughter, Labour MP for Hammersmith Shadow Minister for Justice House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA 020
7219 6052 24/1/12 2.30pm Dear Derek, I am gravely concerned at the way the eviction this is not too strong a word of the tenants of Palingswick House is being handled. The haste with which the tenants have been expected to move has been indecent by any standards, and has caused many of them serious problems and considerable expense. The Iranian Association in particular has been treated very badly. After having been given a month s notice on 20th Dec, they were told by the Chair of PHL that they could stay until 31st Jan, as they were not moving into Norland House and had nowhere else to go. Then on Sunday night, the director of the Iranian Association received a phone call telling him that Wednesday 25th was indeed the deadline and they would have to vacate the premises then. Only after they involved a solicitor were they granted an extension until Saturday. In spite of this the Iranian Association, which is one of only sixty-four Citizenship Test Centres nationwide, has had to suspend its contract and is consequently losing 2,600 per week while the situation persists. Other occupants who are moving to Norland complain of inadequate or unready facilities - there are health and safety issues, which have necessitated the erection of a wooden access tunnel; the address is still to be registered with Royal Mail, who will not redirect mail to it, BT cannot redirect telephone calls yet; in short this has all the hallmarks of a hasty, botched job, which is not delivering on the Council s undertaking to re-house these organisations properly. The discontinuity of operation is a major cause of concern to all the organisations and most are sustaining real financial loss. Please tell me what deadline is the council trying to meet by expelling tenants so hastily. Why cannot these organisations have a sensible amount of time to effect an orderly and efficient transfer to new premises? What is the council s view on the financial loss that several of these organisations are sustaining as a result of this action? Will it pay compensation promptly? The loss of the Iranian Association s contract is a major concern, but other charities are suffering a loss of revenue and cashflow while they inform donors and clients of their new situation. The only fair solution to this crisis would be to allow the present incumbents more time until Norland House is properly ready to receive them and they have made transitional arrangements that do not cripple them as going concerns. As the eviction is due to take place tomorrow, I would be grateful for your reply today.. Kind regards, Andy
