Perception Towards Guidance and Help-Seeking Barriers Among
College Students

This study highlights several factors that contribute to the difficulty

students face when asking for help, particularly with mental health
issues. The research involved 326 students aged between 17 to 27,
revealing a variety of barriers that prevents many from seeking the
assistance they need.

Fear of stigma
Distrust in Mental Health Professionals
Self-Disclosure Difficulties
Perceived Devaluation
Lack of Knowledge

One of the most significant barriers is the fear of stigma, with 77% of
students considering it a high barrier to seeking help but the 23% of
the college respondents consider fear of stigma as a low help-seeking
barrier. This data showed that a lot of college students are afraid of
being judged or viewed differently if they admit to struggling with
mental health challenges.

Moving on, distrust in mental health professionals emerged as another

major barrier, with 73.2% of respondents expressing a lack of
confidence in mental health services and the 26.8% of them are not.
This distrust could stem from concerns about being misunderstood or
fears over the confidentiality of their issues.

Moreover, difficulties on self-disclosure also prevent many students

:
from reaching out. A striking 89.9% of participants consider this as a
high barrier than the 10.1% of the college respondents, suggesting that
they find it difficult to open up about personal matters, which makes
accessing help even harder.

In addition, perceived devaluation to the fear of being not taken

seriously when seeking help was identified as 28.8% of respondents
consider it as a low help-seeking barrier but 71.2% of the college
respondents cited that perceived devaluation as a high help seeking
barrier. This means that many students feel that others may judge or
diminish the significance of their struggles if they seek assistance.

lastly, a lack of knowledge about available resources and how to access

help was noted by 71.2% of students as a high help-seeking barrier
even though the 28.8% of the college respondents consider it as a low
help-seeking barrier. This suggests that many students are simply
unaware of where to go or how to get the help they need.

In conclusion, this infographic reveals that fear of stigma, distrust in

professionals, self-disclosure difficulties, perceived devaluation, and
lack of knowledge are the reasons why college students struggle to
seek help. Breaking these barriers and understanding that "ASKING
FOR HELP IS NOT A WEAKNESS" this is crucial for students to take
control of their mental health and well-being.
