LAN( Local Area Network)
Defination of LAN:
LAN stands for local area network. It is a
computer network that spans a small
geographic area,typically within a building
or campus, and is used to connect devices
such as computers, printers, and servers.
Requirement of LAN:
Here are the requirements for setting up a
local area network (LAN):
Hardware Requirements:
1. Network interface cards(NICs):Each
device needs a NIC to connect to the
network.
2. Switches or Hubs:Connect multiple
devices to the network.
3. Routers:Connect the LAN to the
internet or other networks.
4. Servers: Provide shared resources,
such as files,printers,or applications.
5. Workstation: Devices used by users
to access the network.
6. Cables and Connecters:Ethernet
cables,RJ-45 connectors, and patch
panels.
7. Wireless Access Points(WAPs):For
wireless LAN connectivity.
Software Requirements:
1. Operating system: Install an OS on
each device, such as
windows,macOS,or LINUX.
2. Networking Operating System:
Manages network resources, such as
Windows Server or Linux.
3. Devices Drivers: Install drivers for
NICs, printers, and other devices.
4. Network Protocols: Install
TCP/IP,DNS,DHCP, and other
protocols.
Other Requirements:
1. IP Addresses: Assign unique IP
addresses to each device.
2. Subnet Mask:Define the subnet mask
for the network.
3. Gateway IP Address: Set the default
gateway IP address.
4. DNS Server IP Address: Set the DNS
server IP address.
5. Network Security: Implement
security measures, such as
firewalls,antivirus software and
access controls.
6. Network Documentation: keeps
records of network configuration,
device information, and
troubleshooting logs.

Observation:
A local area network (LAN) is a collection of
devices connected together in one physical
location,such as a building,office, or home.
Conclusion:
LANs(Local Area Network) use Ethernet as the
primary technology for wired
connectivity. Some of the network devices we
use on our LAN are switches , access points,
and routers.Ethernet is the dominant
standard that is used on our LAN , wireless
devices use another standard.
