 Summary 

 The author Pearl S. Buck has mentioned in the very beginning of her essay
that India had always been the part of background of her life. When she was
young, her family doctor and his wife had narrated to her the stories about
India and its people and the lifestyle of Indians. She was greatly fascinated by
the fair and beautiful women of Kashmir and felt that the Indian life was as
colourful and varied as the life of people of America.
 The author further stated that people from India had settled in most parts of
the world and wherever they went, they formed a group of their own. She
described Jawaharlal Nehru and Vijaya Laxmi Pandit as the intellectual
personalities of India. The author's visit to India was not only to see the Taj
Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri but also to interact with the young intellectuals and
the peasants. The author criticised the British Government for not benefitting
the people of India.
 She was also of the opinion that the Americans did not fully understand the
significance of bloodless revolution and the American War of Independence
lacked the significance of the Gandhian approach.
The author also had vivid memories of her visit to a village family. She found
that Indian people were highly religious and God fearing. However, she did
not appreciate religion taking the form of fanaticism. She concluded by
affirming that Christian missionaries should prove by action what they preach.
She further affirmed that people of India knew what it was to pay the last full
measure of the coat of idealism.
