I am writing the email to introduce one of the most prestigious Chinese celebrities to

you, Confucius.

Being a great thinker, educator and founder of Confucianism, Confucius is an ancient

sage during the Spring and Autumn Period. His words and life story were recorded by

his disciples and their students in The Analects. As an enduring classic of ancient Chinese

culture, The Analects has influenced all thinkers, writers and politicians in the over-2000-

year-long history of China after Confucius. No scholar could truly understand this long­

standing culture or the inner world of the ancient Chinese without this book.

Much of Confucian thought on Heaven and people represents universal human values.

computer. Browsing a course selective system online, he is considering whether to choose

The portrayal is intended to tell us that when people face an either-or choice, some are
intimidated by difficulties and take a shortcut, while others deem them as good opportunities

impasse to a brilliant future. For instance, in 1993, J. K. Rowling, unemployed and with
clinical depression, had even planned to commit suicide in despair. Fortunately, she did not
give up, and it was under such circumstances that she began to create what later became
the best-selling Harry Potter series. For another, difficulties also teach people to cherish
their life. But for the hardships in her life, Helen Keller wouldn't have written the famous
article Three Days to See.
In summary, difficulty is an unavoidable part of everyone's life, and the triumph

The column chart above reveals clearly the statistics of reading quantity per person in seven
countries in 2013. Based upon the data, the reading volumes in the U.S., Israel and Russia are
highest among the seven nations, accounting for 56, 44 and 42 books per person respectively. On
the contrary, those in Korea and China are lowest, taking叩merely 11 and 4 books.
This tendency is rather disturbing, for reading extensively is no less necessary to
one's mental life than fresh air is to one's physical life. From reading extensively, we
can derive companionship, experience and instruction. First and foremost, ·a good book
is our faithful friend. It can increase our contentment when we are cheerful and happy,
and lessen our pain when we are sad or lonely. Furthermore, reading extensively can
also offer us a wide range of experiences. Few of us can travel far from home or live
long over one hundred, but all of us can live many different lives through the pages
of books. Last but not least, reading extensively can increase our intellectual ability,
broaden our minds and make us wise.
Though with the advent of TV, cellphone and the Internet, books are no longer read as
extensively as they once were, nothing can replace the role that reading extensively plays in
our lives.
