Year 7 – Forensic Science

Mock Crime Scene

Your goal is to create a crime scene that your classmates could analyse and solve in
class.

A. Instructions:

For this task, you will work in groups to create a mock crime scene (within a 2 metre
by 2 metre grid).

You will take on the role of Crime Scene Investigator by investigating the crime
scene and record evidence.

Afterwards, one group will create a Court Demonstrative (a visual explanation of the
scene) outlining the major pieces of evidence in the case.

Keep the following in mind as you set up your crime scene:

 Keep the crime scene simple.

 Do not try to include too much evidence.
 Either create a scenario or model an actual case.
 Set up your crime scene and photograph it.
 Draw a scaled diagram of the crime scene.

B. Requirements:

Your mock crime scene may be a small model or staged life-size scene from a
hypothetical case of your own creation or from an actual case that you research.

There are several required components that you must represent in your crime scene.

1. Evidence and Evidence Documentation:

You must include up to 4 different types of evidence. The types of evidence you
choose to include is entirely up to you and your group members.

If you include evidence that requires comparisons (ie; fingerprints, drugs, hair, etc.),
you will need to provide additional clues for comparison in your presentation. For
example, if there are fingerprints at your crime scene, you'll need to provide images
of potential suspects so your classmates can compare. You will need to take
photographs of the crime scene and evidence as you go along.

This project is modified from Bertino and Bertino (2016) "Capstone Projects" Forensic Science: Fundamentals & Investigations,
2nd Ed. National Geographic Learning and South-Western Cengage Learning: Boston, MA. pp. 619-658.

2. Evidence Form:

Record your evidence in the table below. Use post-it notes to number the evidence
at the scene and in your photos.

3. Participation and Planning:

All members of your group are required to participate in this task. This may include
creating evidence, taking photos, creating a presentation, giving the presentation,
etc. This is a large task to complete, and it is very likely that you’ll need to spend
time working on this at home.

C. Presentation

You will need to include all photos, relevant details and a scaled drawing of the crime
scene.

Your presentation should show the evidence and the results from any tests run on
the evidence, but should not make statements about who committed the crime!

Do not solve the case in the presentation!

Other groups will take on the role of solving the crime.

Your presentation must include the following elements:

1. Crime Scene Drawing:

Include a scaled drawing of your crime scene in your presentation. The drawing must
include a scale and the numbered pieces of evidence.

2. Photos:

You will need to take photographs of the crime scene and evidence.

Due: Tuesday 16th March. Upload your presentation to Google Classroom.
