LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this section, the student should be able to:
1. Define culture and values.
2. Understand the Filipino values.
3. Think practical ways to apply being makadiyos, makatao, makakalikasan, and
makabayan, in daily life.
OVERVIEW
What is Culture?
In sociological perspective, culture is defined as the total and distinctive way of life and
it encompasses learned behaviours, beliefs, attitudes, values, and ideals characteristic of certain
societies.
Panopio and Raymundo (2004) opine that culture is a people's heritage and it is the
customary ways in which groups organize their ways of behaving, thinking, and feeling. It is
transmitted from one generation to another through language and arts.
Culture can be learned. The norms, skills, values, and knowledge which constitute one's
culture are acquired during the course of one's life and not transmitted genetically.
It can also be transmitted from one generation to the next generation, humans are
capable to pass through the behaviour patterns and knowledge to their offspring. Culture is
being transmitted through the process of socialization, where children acquire attitudes
essential in social life and train them in accordance with expected behavioral patterns of society.
Culture is dynamic. It changes at different rate. Change happens as a product of
discoveries, inventions, and influences of other culture.
LEARNING ACTIVITY 1:
Understanding Filipino values through the national motto
What can you say about this? What do you think is the implication of integrating the national
motto of the Philippines to Panunumpa sa Watawat?
The Philippine national motto, “Maka-Diyos, Maka-Tao, Makakalikasan, at Makabayan”,
reminds us to prioritize God, people, nature, and country. Integrating this into the
Panunumpa sa Watawat encourages Filipinos to be responsible citizens, promote unity,
and contribute to national progress. It inspires us to value spirituality, human dignity,
environmental care, and patriotism, fostering pride and loyalty to our country.
Form a group with 10 members. Share and consolidate your insights. A representative from your
group will share this to the class.

REFLECTIONS
This module deepened my understanding of culture as a dynamic, learned behavior
encompassing values, beliefs, attitudes, and ideals. I gained insight into Filipino values, including
being makadiyos (God-loving), makatao (people-centered), makakalikasan (nature-loving), and
makabayan (country-loving).
I appreciate recognizing culture's impact on identity and society, understanding Filipino
values, and learning to apply these values practically in daily life.
APPLICATION
This week, I will demonstrate my commitment to being a responsible citizen by
participating in community clean-ups and volunteer work, respecting community rules, and
attending church services. I will embody and live out Filipino values in my daily life by practicing
gratitude and compassion (makadiyos), showing empathy and kindness (makatao), reducing
waste and conserving resources (makakalikasan), and supporting local initiatives and community
development (makabayan).
