COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM
Early childhood is the most fundamental and critical stage of human development. It is a period of life where the human brain
rapidly develops and is known to be the best stage to enhance skills. The first six years of life are most vital. In early childhood,
both intellectual and moral foundation must be built in every child. T
Key Components of the Comprehensive ECE Curriculum in the Philippines
1. Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP):
2. Domains of Development: PHYSICAL, SOCIO-EMOTIONAL, COGNITIVE, LANGUAGE, LITERACY AND COMMUNCATION,
VALUES EDUCATION
3. Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Law: The ECCD Act (Republic Act No. 10410) in the Philippines mandates
the creation of an integrated and comprehensive system of early childhood care and development programs. (HOLISTIC
DEVELOPMENT)
MATATAG CURRICULUM
Make the curriculum relevant to produce competent and job-ready, active and responsible citizen
Take steps to accelerate delivery of basic education facilities and services
Take good care of learners by promoting learners’ well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment
Give support to teachers to teach better
Developmentally Appropriate Practices Implications to Teaching and Managing ECE Programs
     1. CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
Child-centered learning- should be flexible and responsive to children's needs, interests, and developmental stages.
Individualized learning- Recognizing that children develop at different rates, instruction should be differentiated to
meet the unique needs, abilities, and interests
Integrated learning experiences- Learning should be holistic, incorporating multiple domains of development
(cognitive, social, emotional, and physical) rather than focusing narrowly on academic skills.
     2. Classroom Environment
     • Safe and Nurturing Environment: The classroom should be a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space where children feel
secure and supported. This involves organizing the physical space to encourage exploration and learning.
     • Rich and Stimulating Materials: Provide a variety of age-appropriate materials and resources that promote learning
and development in all areas. Materials should be accessible and reflect diversity and inclusivity.
     • Positive Relationships: Teachers should build positive, supportive relationships with children, which fosters a sense of
belonging and encourages a love of learning.
     3. Teaching Strategies
     • Intentional Teaching: Educators should use intentional teaching practices that are purposeful, planned, and
responsive to the needs and interests of children.
     • Scaffolding Learning: Teachers should provide the right level of support to help children achieve new skills and
understandings, gradually removing support as children gain competence.
     • Observation and Assessment: Regular observation and assessment of children's development and learning are
essential for planning appropriate activities and interventions.
     3. Family Engagement
     5. Program Management- qualified staff, professional development, inclusive practices
    6. Policy and Advocacy – advocacy for quality ece, adherence to standards

Early Childhood Pedagogies, Approaches, and developmentally Appropriate Practices:
Definition and Implication to Practice of the Profession
Early childhood pedagogies – methods used to educate young children guides educators how to interact with children,
structure learning environments, and deliver curriculum. It encompasses instructional techniques and strategies that enable
learning to take place and provide opportunities for the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and disposition within a
particular social and material context.
Early childhood APPROACHES
    1. Montessori -emphasizes independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological,
         physical, and social development.
    2. Reggio Emilia - views children as strong, capable, and resilient, rich with wonder and knowledge. It emphasizes the
importance of a child’s environment, creativity, and self-expression. (project-based learning)
    3. Waldorf( Steiner) - emphasizes holistic education, focusing on the intellectual, artistic, and practical development of
children in an integrated manner. Delay of formal academic instruction until around age 7, focusing on oral
storytelling, play, and social development in the early years.
    4. HighScope- grounded in active learning and child-initiated activities. It emphasizes the development of cognitive
skills through hands-on experiences. Plan-do-review, balance daily routine, teachers participate as partners in
         learning
    5. Bank Street- children learn best through experience. Integrates emotional, social, physical, cognitive development
    6. Play-based Approach
    7. Forest School - emphasize outdoor education
    8. Project Approach - involves children in in-depth investigations of a topic they find interesting, allowing them to explore
         and research through various activities.
    9. Direct Instruction – specific skills
DAP focuses on five key areas of early learning practices:
    • Creating a caring community of learners. Build positive and responsive relationships between children, staff, and
families, both among groups and within the program, to create a community that supports all children as they develop
and learn to their capacity in all domains.
    • Teaching to enhance development and learning. Provide a balance of teacher-directed and childinitiated activities
and plan experiences that meet individual needs, interests, and learning goals.
    • Planning curriculum to achieve important goals. Develop a written curriculum that reflects developmental
milestones and appropriate early learning goals for children and that supports individualized learning.
    • Assessing children's development and learning. Link assessment to curriculum and early learning standards and
use authentic assessment methods to measure a child' s progress.
    • Establishing reciprocal relationships with families. Work in partnership with families to learn about each child, to
develop two-way communication, and to establish supportive relationships with all families.
