METHOD STATEMENT
First & Second Fix Carpentry

All employees and self employed labour will comply with the requirements of
the Health & Safety at Work etc, Act 1974 and other relevant Health & Safety
Legislation including, our own Safety Policy, risk assessments and method
statements, together with any specific site rules, and where applicable the
principle contractors Safety Policy and Construction Phase Health & Safety
Plan.
This method statement covers the majority of the day to day activities for
carrying out work as a carpentry sub-contractor to a principle contractor.
However for every job, the site conditions, type of work and materials to be
used should be considered prior to commencement. If site specific risks are
identified a supplement to this method statement should be produced.
1. Brief Description of the work to be carried out
To carry out general enabling works to include removal of shelves and
pictures and re instate in another area.
2. Management and Supervision
L&M Carpentry Ltd will provide a dedicated site supervisor for the duration of
the works. The site supervisor will have direct contact with their Contracts
Manage. The site supervisor will liaise directly with the Site Manager on site
and will pass information directly to the operatives under his control.
3. Statutory Notifications
All statutory notifications have been complete by the client.
4. General Sequence of operations
Prior to any work being carried out, our contractors will attend any
relevant site induction or tool box talk which is requested by the
principle contractor.
Materials will be delivered to site at a pre-arranged time and stored as
per the site manager’s instructions.

Workers will wear correct levels of PPE to include safety footwear, high
visibility jacket or waistcoat, gloves and hard hat. Additional PPE
including Eye Protection and Hearing Protection will be provided and
worn as the risk assessments identify.
The site supervisor for L&M Carpentry Ltd will produce for inspection
any relevant paperwork for the workforce and the equipment used on
site.
Access to all working areas will be via the safest means available at all
times and as per the site manager’s instruction.
Suitable working platforms will be utilised at all times, for low level
works a suitable purpose built or manufactured hop up platform will be
utilised. For High level works a suitable Scaffold platform will be
provided.
All working at heights is to be risk assessed before the start of any
work.
All hazardous or high risk workings will be suitably risk assessed
before the start of the work.
All conflicting work is to be planned out at the earliest opportunity to
ensure continuity of working.
Manual Handling will be reduced to the lowest levels for safe manual
handling at all times, in essence we will allow for materials to be lifted
at a ratio of 25 kg per person.
The supervisor will inspect all workings to ensure they comply with the
specification & drawings.
The supervisor will liaise with the Principal Contractor to repair or
replace any unsuitable materials or defects.
The supervisor will liaise with the Principal Contractor to ensure safe
working practices are utilised at all times.
5. Job Specific Operations
5.1 Door Frames & Door Hanging
Materials will have been delivered to site at a pre-arranged time and
stored as per the principles contractor’s requirements.
All materials will have their weights identified prior to further movement.
Safe clear access will be provided and maintained directly to the
opening where the linings are to be fitted.
A suitable safe area will be provided with enough space provided for
the carpentry works adjacent to the opening.
Frames and doors will be transported to the work area on trolleys and
then manually handled into position allowing for one man per 25kg
weight of the product.
The frames will be raised into their final position using a crow bar to
raise the frame and then wedged to prevent them dropping.
The frames will be wedged, set and levelled prior to being fixed to the
opening.
Doors will be hung, architrave fitted and door furniture fitted as per
client specification.
The work area will be left clean and tidy with all debris and waste
removed and placed in an appropriate waste skip.

5.2 Roof Trusses
Scaffold access and working platforms will be provided by the principle
contractor; these will consist of external perimeter scaffold that will be
erected to ensure sufficient manoeuvring space around the building at
a level (typically) 300mm below plate.
A birdcage scaffold will be provided to the internal areas by the
principle contractor; this will be positioned at a level (typically) 300mm
below ceiling ties.
Prior to any work being carried out a full safety inspection will have
been carried out of the scaffold by the site manager.
Trusses will be lifted into position by mobile crane on a contract lift
basis. Lifting plans and competent persons will be provided for all lifting
operations.
Once the trusses have been lifted into position by crane they will be
manually moved along the length of the roof to their final position on
the wall plate by two operatives working off the external scaffold
platform.
When the first truss has been located in its final position by the
handling team, carpenters shall immediately provide temporary
diagonal bracing to hold the truss vertical and to act as a rigid start
point for the remainder of the trusses, this will be located so as not to
obstruct the passage as further trusses are positioned.
Roof bracing details will be installed in accordance with the roof
designer’s layout drawings.
As soon as sufficient trusses have been temporarily positioned, the
carpenters shall commence the fixing of internal permanent bracing to
create fully stable sections of roof.
Prior to the permanent internal and high level bracing being installed
the principle contractor will provide a suitable internal work platform
raised off the birdcage, running the length of the trusses to enable safe
access for carpenters to complete the bracing at high level.
The working platform will be complete with double guard rails with
access from a secured ladder.
Under no circumstances shall operatives be allowed to climb within
temporarily braced roof structure.
Under no circumstances shall operatives raise themselves above the
external guardrails in order to reach upper levels when working on the
external scaffold platform.
5.3 1st Floor Joists
Ground floor areas will be clear and free of debris prior to the works
being carried out.
Low level Podium work platforms or bandstands will be utilised beneath
the area where the joists are to be positioned.
Joists will be lifted manually into position by two operatives working
beneath.
With one operative working at each end of the joist they will be lifted
into position and located into the hangers.

This work will continue systematically across the floor area.
Once all the joists are located and fixed in position the floor will be
boarded out from above.
Prior to the boarding being completed the bandstands will be removed
and soft landing bags will be installed to the ground floor areas.
At all times while boarding, work will be carried out from behind the
leading edge using the boarded areas as a working platform.
The soft landing bags will remain in position while the joists are
boarded out.
On completion of the boarding out the soft landing bags will be
removed.
The work area will be left clean and tidy with debris removed to the
appropriate waste skip.
5.4 Fitting of Internal Stairs
Complete stair packs will be delivered at a pre-arranged time
A suitable safe area will be provided with enough space provided for
the works adjacent to the stairwell.
Stair part weights will be determined prior to installation
The assembled stairs will be manually lifted into position allowing for
one person per 25kg in weight
Once in position the stairs will be levelled, set and wedged prior to
fixing
Fixings will be made as per the client’s specification with proprietary
fixings
Each work area will be left clean and tidy with debris removed to the
appropriate waste skip
5.5 General 1st & 2nd Fix Carpentry including noggins, skirting, architrave
Works will be planned with the Principle Contractor to ensure that any
conflicting work is to be planned out at the earliest opportunity to
ensure continuity of working.
A suitable safe area will be provided with enough space provided for
the works adjacent to allow carpentry and the use of power tools.
Power tools will be fitted with vacuum extraction units to reduce the
levels of dust produced, operatives will also wear the correct grade
disposable mask (P2 or P3) when cutting timber.
General 1st & 2nd fix works will be carried out as per the client’s
specification, risk assessments will be submitted for the tasks.
All work areas will be left clean and tidy and debris removed to the
appropriate waste skip.
5.6 Casing & Boxing, including low level and riser cupboards
An area of suitable size will be designated for the works to be carried
out, including an area designated for the erection of a low level
platform.

Low level works will be carried out from the floor, however once the
works extend to above approximately 2.2 metres it will be necessary to
provide a suitable low level working platform.
Timber will be cut to length on the floor areas and passed up to the
platform to be fixed.
Soft wood framing will be fixed to the walls as per the client’s detail.
Ply wood will be fixed to the softwood frame as per the client’s detail.
Each work area will be left clean and tidy with debris removed to the
appropriate waste skip.
5.7 Timber Cladding
Works will be planned with the Principle Contractor to ensure that any
conflicting work is to be planned out at the earliest opportunity to
ensure continuity of working.
A suitable safe area will be provided with enough space provided for
the works adjacent to allow carpentry and the use of power tools.
Works will be carried out from a suitable scaffold working platform, safe
access to the scaffold platform will be provided by the principle
contractor.
Timber battens will have been previously been delivered to site; these
will be lifted onto the loading bay by mechanical means.
The battens will be manually handled from the loading bay to the area
where they will be cut and fixed to the building.
Timber battens will be fitted to the building as per the principle
contractor’s detail with proprietary fixings
No cutting of timber will be carried out with power tools directly on the
working platform.
Once the battens are fixed into position the weatherboard cladding will
be fixed horizontally to the battens.
The cladding will be lifted onto the loading bay as per the battens and
manually handled to the work area.
All work areas will be left clean and tidy and debris removed to the
appropriate waste skip.
5.8 Windows
Windows will have been delivered to site and stored as per the site
manager’s instruction.
Windows will be mechanically lifted to the plots and manually lifted
inside by operatives at a ratio of 25kg per operative.
The works will be completed from inside the plot with the windows
being fitted from the inside.
The glazed units will be lifted into position by two operatives into the
openings and fixed by straps to the reveal.
Reveals will be drilled using battery operated power tools.
Handles and vents will be fitted at finals stage.
Work areas will be left clean and tidy and debris removed to the
appropriate waste area.
5.9 Window Boards and Linings

An area of suitable size will be designated for the works to be carried
out.
The works are low level and will therefore be carried out from standing
on the floor.
Timber will be cut to size adjacent to the works and fitted as per the
principle contractor’s specification.
Each work area will be left clean and tidy with debris removed to the
appropriate waste skip.
5.10 Facia & Soffits
Scaffold access and working platforms will be provided by the principle
contractor; these will consist of external perimeter scaffold that will be
erected to ensure sufficient manoeuvring space around the building at
a level (typically) 300mm below plate.
Facia & Soffit materials will be lifted to the working platform by
mechanical means and positioned adjacent to the work area.
Materials will be split down and handled by two operatives who will cut
and fix the sections to the trussed ends with the manufacturer’s
proprietary fixings.
Materials will be cut to length using hand and power tools from a trestle
on the working platform.
At no time will the operatives raise themselves above the height of the
guide rails on the working platform.
No cutting of materials will be carried out directly on the working
platform.
5.11 Low Level Roofs
It will be necessary for these works to be carried out at height therefore
a scaffold working platform or rap around tower will be provide by the
principle contractor for these works.
An area of suitable size will be designated for the works to be carried
out
The working platform will be complete with double guard rails and toe
boards.
Timbers will be cut and assembled at ground level where possible and
lifted up to the working platform to be fixed.
Timber for the low level roofs will be lifted to the platforms by
mechanical means and cut on the adjacent work platform.
All cutting of timber will take place on work horses of boards placed on
the platform; no cutting will take place directly on the platform.
Each work area will be left clean and tidy with debris removed to the
appropriate waste skip.
5.11 Balcony Decking
It will be necessary for these works to be carried out at height therefore
a scaffold working platform will be provide by the principle contractor
for these works.
The working platform will be erected directly beneath the balcony area
to be boarded.

Decking boards will have been previously cut to length to reduce
cutting in the installation area.
Access to the balcony will be made from inside the plot; the balcony
edge protection will be in place.
Decking boards will be laid out and drilled with proprietary fixings will
be used to fix the boards to the balcony frame.

Personnel & Labour
L&M Carpentry Ltd will provide suitable levels of manpower on site as per the
requirements of the principle contractor to enable the works to be carried out
safely and within the given timescale.
The following will be provided on site by the principle contractor:
Safe, clear access to the work area
Suitable storage area for materials
Waste Disposal Arrangements
A 110 volt electricity supply
Suitable scaffold working platforms where identified
Telehandler and Driver
Crane and Operator for Lifting Operations
Access to Shared Welfare Facilities

read in conjunction with this method statement.
8. General Standards
All work equipment is to undergo a daily safety check before use.
High housekeeping standards must be maintained.

Minimum Personal Protective Equipment is Hard Hat, High Visibility
vest and steel toe capped boots, These must be worn at all times whilst
on site.
All equipment is to be in date for examination and test.
Certificate will be provided for Paslode gun operatives if required.
Only 110 volt in date electrical equipment or battery powered will be
used.
Task lighting will be provided by L&M Carpentry Ltd where required.
L&M Carpentry Ltd uses an independent safety advisor who will visit
the site at regular intervals and produce a report for their works.
All operatives are to be made aware of the accident & emergency
arrangements on the site through the site induction carried out by the
principle contractor.
All accidents however trivial are to be reported to both the principle
contractor and L&M Carpentry site supervisor.
