Introduction
In this work that was given to me by our english Teacher Americo, I am going to
apresent my searches that are turned on to the compreenhsion of my theme. After make
some searches in our society, I could see that in nowadays people have a bad thought
about the act that shows the union of two people, called “Marriage” and I am also going
to speak about one of the most important organization that contributes alot to what is the
development of a human been, called “family”.
1
Concepts about the Marriage
Well, in my view Point, I can define Marriage by this way: Marriage is one of the
social institutions that is universal and found in some form or the other in every society.
It is the institution that admits individuals into family life. In fact, it is the basis of family.
It is an institution that has been formed to regulate the sexual life of people in any society.
Various Sociologists have defined marriage in the following ways:
According with Edward Westermarck: Marriage is more or less durable
connection between male and female, lasting beyond the mere act of propagation and the
birth of offspring.
According with Malinowski: Marriage is a socially sanctioned union of male and
female, or a secondary institution devised by society to sanction the union and mating of
male and female, for the purposes of:
• Establishing a household,
• Entering into sex relations,
• Procreating, and
• Providing care to offspring
Characteristics of a Marriage
From my searches I may describe these two following characteristics of a
marriage: procreation and establishment of the family.
Procreation: in a marriage is defined as an act that allows the union of two
individuals of the opposite sex with the aim of generate children. But sometimes the
sexual relation is not just to generate children, but it also contributes for the good of the
marriage, allowing the individuals to enjoy an intim moment.
2
Establishment of the family: the marriage allows the construction of a healthy
household, allowing the children to grow in an environment of love, respect, and a solid
household that will give all the information that the children will need to grow in all the
aspects.
Types of Marriages
In every society, different types of marriages exist. I am going to apresent some
types of Marriage that we also can find in Angola.
Monogamy
Monogamy: is a form of marriage where only one spouse exists — one husband
and one wife. As a form of marriage, monogamy is found in almost all countries across
the world and is also the most accepted form of marriage. Many sociologists consider it
the most enduring (long lasting) form of marriage, which ensures that children get
maximum attention and care by the parents. Even aged parents are better looked after
under this system of marriage.
3
Polygamy
Polygamy refers to a form of marriage, where there are more than one spouse,
either more than one husband or more than one wife. Polygamy is divided into two types:
polygyny and polyandry.
When a man marries more than one woman, it is polygyny.
Polygyny is of two types:
• Non-Sororal Polygyny: When a man marries more than one woman, who are
not related, it is called nonsororal polygyny.
• Sororal Polygyny: Sororal polygyny comes into existence when a man marries
more than one woman, who are sisters.
Polyandry
Polyandry: is a type of marriage in which one woman marries more than one
man. It is a system where there is one wife but many husbands: This type of marriage
exists among some primitive tribes (Todas of Malabar Hills) and in countries such as
Tibet.
Polyandry is further divided into two categories:
Non-Fraternal Polyandry: Non-fraternal polyandry takes place when one
woman marries more than one man, who are in no way related to each other.
4
Fraternal Polyandry: Fraternal polyandry takes place when one woman marries
more than one man, related by blood, like brothers. A number of causes have been
attributed to the existence of polyandry. One of the main reasons is the negative female
sex ratio and lesser number of females in comparison to males.
5
Conclusion
To conclude, marriage is importante because gives a good family environment that will
contribute alot to the life of the children and it will help to control the sexual behaviour of people
in a society. In nowadays we listen the people saying that they will just marry when they will be
in an advanced age, but to marry, we will need more than just be an old man or an old woman.
The maturity is one of the most important things that will need in a marriage to drive well our life
style with our partner and to create well our children. Don´t matter if is a Monogamy marriage,
a polygamy … the absence of the maturity in an household is one of the reasons why the people
choose the divorce.
