HISTORICAL EVENTS
One historical event in Vietnam is the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, which took place from March to May
1954. It was a decisive battle between the French Union forces and the forces led by Ho Chi Minh.
/dɪˈsaɪ.sɪv/ forces: lực lượng quân đội

The battle was fought in the northwestern part of Vietnam, near the Laos border. The French had built a
military base in Dien Bien Phu, hoping to draw the Vietnamese force into a decisive battle. However, the
Vietnamese forces were able to surround the French base and launch a sustained attack, using artillery
and infantry.

The French: người pháp

/ˈmɪl.ɪ.tər.i/ /səˈsteɪnd/: lâu /ɑːˈtɪl.ər.i/ pháo binh /ˈɪn.fən.tri/ bộ binh

The French were eventually overwhelmed, and on May 7, 1954, they surrendered. The battle was a
significant turning point in the First Indochina War, as it led to the end of French colonial rule in
Vietnam. It also paved the way for the 1954 Geneva Accords, which ended the war and established
North and South Vietnam as separate states.

/sərˈen.dər /kəˈləʊ.ni.əl/ /əˈkɔːd/

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu is considered a defining moment in Vietnamese history, as it marked the
beginning of Vietnam's endeavor to gain independence from foreign rule. It also inspired other anti-
colonial movements around the world and contributed to the end of French colonialism in Southeast
Asia.
