SKILL 11.13: Assisting a Client to Use a Cane

1. Gathered equipment and supplies. Introduced self, explained what procedure was
to be done and why. Performed hand hygiene, following infection control measures,
and verified client’s identity. Provided privacy. Provided comfort and safety for
client and self, including ensuring path was free of obstacles.
2. Ensured that the client was appropriately dressed to walk with shoes or slippers
with non-skid soles.
3. Prepared the client for walking:
a. Asked client to hold the cane on the stronger side of the body.
b. Positioned the tip of standard cane about 15 cm (6 in.) to the side and 15 cm
(6 in.) in front of the near foot so that elbow was slightly flexed.
4. When maximum support was required, instructed the client to move the cane
forward about 30 cm (1 ft), or a distance that is comfortable while the body weight is
borne by both legs; then, move the affected leg forward to the cane while the weight
is borne by the cane and stronger leg. Next, move the unaffected leg forward ahead
of the cane and weak leg while the weight is borne by the cane and weak leg.
5. When the client required less support, instructed the client to move the cane and
weak leg forward at the same time, while the weight is borne by the stronger leg,
then move the stronger leg forward while the weight is borne by the cane and the
weak leg.
6. Ensured client safety by walking beside the client on the affected side and walking
the client for the time or distance indicated in the plan of care.
7. Documented ambulation and client response.
