In the start of the project, in most projects I joined with, one of the activities shall be implemented or

started first is excavation.

You may copy this Method Statement and submit to the Engineer but please take a while to read your
specification first as this may differ from it and revision will be needed.

Scope

1.1 This Method Statement describes a proper work procedure shall be carried out during the
excavation stage as per specification and contract drawings.

Excavation procedure

Work Procedure

5.1 Site Preparation

5.1.1 Existing Services – [Company] construction team would conduct investigation and acquire
information about site services might have been placed/embedded below the ground. Services,
wherever found shall be rerouted and protected to place will not affect site activities.

5.1.2 Setting out – [Company] surveyor would conduct site survey to mark/stake-out the lines and levels
of the objective excavation for foundations as per indicated in the approved drawing.

5.2 Excavation

5.2.1 The area to be excavated shall be properly mark and clear before starting the works.

5.2.2 The depth of excavation shall be periodically checked by a surveyor to avoid over excavation. the
bank of excavated area shall be sloped 30 degrees and shall be maintained to avoid collapse of the bank
into the excavated area.

5.2.3 All excavated material shall be kept minimum of 1.0 meter from the edge of excavation or shall be
stock piled to the area designated by the Engineer.

5.2.4 For all excavation activities, adequate safety barriers, sign boards, advance warning signs would be
used.

5.2.5 For foundation, as soon as the excavation reaches the required depth/elevation the surface shall
be leveled and shall be compacted to 95 % of maximum dry density or MDD.

5.2.6 Before the compaction starts, it shall make sure that the excavated level is free from standing
water or excessive moisture content.

5.2.7 Inspection would be conducted during compaction for checking and approval of the Engineer.

5.2.8 The compaction test report shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval prior to proceed
succeeding work.

5.2.9 Anti-termite treatment would be conducted prior to start blinding works but make sure anti-
termite material is approved by the Engineer.

5.3 Back filling work.

5.3.1 After completion of the compaction under blinding, tie beams and ground slab. Back filling shall
commence using similar excavated material. Care shall be taken to remove bolder, vegetation’s and any
other deleterious materials.

5.3.2 But prior to back filling, the compacted surface shall be accepted by the Engineer.

5.3.3 The thickness of the back fill shall not be greater than 300mm.
5.3.4 The sub-grade once approved, the excavated materials or any material source approved by the
Engineer shall be placed in layers not more than 300 mm thick followed by compaction test when
surface level is ready.

5.3.5 In-situ dry density test ( compaction test ) shall be performed at the rate indicated in the
specification.

5.3.6 Back filling followed with compaction shall continue till final level is achieved.

Safety

6.1 All works shall comply with safety procedure or instruction as set in out in project Safety Plan and
Municipality rules and regulation.

6.2 Basic Personal Protective Equipment ( PPE ) shall be worn by all staff or laborers.

6.3 Trained operator or banks shall be engaged to control or operate heavy equipment machine.

PREPARATION, GENERAL FILL AND COMPACTION

1.0 OBJECTIVE

1.1 Is to define the procedure for mix, lead, lay, spread and compaction of backfillmaterials for the
contract no GTC.101/ED/01 Engineering, Procurement, Installationand Commissioning (EPIC) of Ras
Laffan Utilization Project –Buildings and utilitiesand support service Phase 1-Utilities.

2.0 SCOPE

2.1 For the backfilling in Service Base Area.

3.0 REFERENCEProject Approved DrawingsQatar Petroleum Standard Specification for Civil Works Vol. I,
Section 13British Standards BS 1377, part 2, 3, 12, 13, 15B, 15C.Qatar Construction Specification Vol. II,
Section 12

4.0 PROCEDURE

4.1 SITE CLEARANCE

4.1.1 Prior to commencement of work, the contractor shall obtain the relevant workpermits from
QP/RLC

4.1.2 The contractor shall under take clearing of site in order to remove any existing vegetation; steel,
concrete, unused buildings identified for demolition, piping debris, loose wind blown sand and other
foreign materials.

4.1.3. All existing structures, foundations, etc. as indicated above shall be entirely demolished, removed,
transported and disposed of by the contractor to a debris yard designated by Qatar Petroleum. All soft
spots left shall be filled with suitable materialand compacted as per specification.

4.1.4 Excavated material, if any, and suitable and approved by Qatar Petroleum for backfilling shall be
transported and placed in fill areas with in the limits of the work.Owner: QBECPage 2 of 4

4.2 SITE PREPARATION

4.2.1 After clearing, grubbing and removal of all unsuitable material from the surface, soil sample will be
taken from the existing ground and tested for Maximum DryDensity and Optimum Moisture Content of
the existing soil. Then the ground shall bescarified, watered, leveled and compacted. The compacted
ground is tested for FieldDry Density test by means of Nuclear Gauge Method so that the upper 250 mm
of thecompacted subsoil material has a minimum density equal to 95% of the Maximum DryDensity as
defined in the BS 1377 part 13

.4.3 FILL MATERIALS-DESERT FILL

4.3.1 Desert fill is a natural well-graded sand/gravel material. The characteristic of desert fill material to
be used shall be in accordance with QP Standard SpecificationClause 13.9.1

4.3.2 Maximum water-soluble salt contents shall be 2% by dry weight. Plasticity Indexshall be limited to
a maximum value of 6 as measured in accordance with BS 1377part 2. It shall not contain an excess of
fine or in excess of 2% organic materials asdefined in BS 1377 part 3.

4.3.3 Suitable materials shall include unless and otherwise shown in contractdrawings, desert fill as
described above shall be used exclusively as fill material.

4.3.4 The contractor shall take material approval for the fill materials from Qatar Petroleum prior to
transportation of fill materials. Rock fragments in excess of 100mm, which may exist in natural desert fill
material, shall be removed by screening atsite or by other appropriate method in order to comply with
the gradation limitsindicated in QP Standard Specification Clause 13.9.1

4.4 MIXING, SPREADING AND COMPACTION:

4.4.1 Fill materials shall be transported to site, stacked in heap. Water from QPapproved source is to be
added and mixed thoroughly such that the moisture contentof the filling material is with in ±3% of the
Optimum Moisture Content. The mixed fillingmaterial shall then be spread in layers on the fill area by
means of shovels andgraders. The first layer shall be maximum of 200 mm thickness of loose materials
andthe subsequent layers shall be of 250 mm compacted thickness. The spreaded fillmaterial is
compacted by single drum vibrating roller with adequate number of passesto achieve the required
compaction. The compacted area shall then be tested for required Field Dry Density. Desert fill shall be
compacted to a maximum density equalto 95% of Maximum Dry Density as determined by BS 1377 part
13.Owner: QBECPage 3 of 4

4.5 TESTING FREQUENCY:

4.5 .1 Field tests shall be carried out at the following frequency:4.5.1.1 Density and moisture content (as
determined by BS 1377 test 15B or 15C) one test per 500 cu.m of compacted fill.4.5.1.2 The frequency of
insitu compaction testing by means of Nuclear GaugeMethod shall be of one test per 2000sq. m of
compacted area.4.5.2 No individual value of density shall be acceptable, if MDD is less than 95%
