INTRODUCTION

The concept of the Political Self explores how our social, economic, and
cultural environments shape our mental health and overall well-being. In this
context, modern neuroscience and psychodynamic research offer insights into
how these external factors influence our identity and perceptions. For
instance, our experiences with power dynamics, societal norms, and the
decisions of those in authority directly impact how we view ourselves and our
place in the world.

Politics, derived from the Greek word politiká (πολιτικά), means "affairs of the
cities." It is essentially the process of making decisions that apply to a group of
people. It involves governance, power, and the ability to influence others. This
influence is a core aspect of one’s political self, as it reflects an individual’s
capacity to make decisions not just for themselves but also for a larger group,
whether in a community (pamayanan), state (estado), or nation (bansa).

In the Filipino context, politics or politika often carries a broader meaning

beyond governance. It encompasses the complex relationships, power
struggles, and societal roles that influence everyday life. The decisions made
by political leaders (mga lider ng pamahalaan) can significantly affect the
social and economic conditions of individuals, highlighting the deep
connection between politics and mental well-being.

identity, starting from the pre-colonial period where Filipinos lived in
autonomous communities, to the significant impacts of Spanish, American,
and Japanese colonization. It highlights the struggles for independence and
the ongoing efforts to establish a democratic culture.

throughout the country's history, especially during the colonial resistance
movements. It also covers the formation of the democratic system in the
Philippines, particularly after the People Power Revolution of 1986, which led

cultural shifts have shaped the Filipino political self, emphasizing the
importance of historical context in understanding contemporary political
attitudes and behaviors of Filipinos.
