Cellular Respiration

uses glucose to produce

(ATP)
What is Cellular
respiration?
Respiration is a chemical reaction within
living cells which releases energy from
glucose. Aerobic respiration requires oxygen,
whilst anaerobic respiration does not.
What is aerobic
respiration?
Mitochondria
Aerobic respiration is when oxygen
is used to break down glucose.
Glucose is oxidized to release its
energy. The first stages of
respiration occur in the cytoplasm
in cells but the main site for
respiration is in the mitochondria.
Aerobic respiration equation

glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + energy released

What is anaerobic
respiration?
Most organisms require oxygen to respire and
live, however some organisms can continue to
respire when oxygen runs out. This is
anaerobic respiration. Humans can do this for
a short time, resulting in lactic acid building
up in our muscles. Some fungi and plants
respire anaerobically to release less energy
but stay alive.
