LEARNING OBJETIVES:
Identify the four pillars of education through
analyzing the given examples.
Apply understanding of the four pillars of
education through a skit performance.
Value the importance of the four pillars of
education in teaching by brainstorming
practical application.
“The capacity to learn is a
gift; the ability to learn is a
skill; the willingness to learn
is a choice.”
-Brain Herbert
It is well documented that education is a
human right and a necessity in modern societies,
especially in emergencies and post-conflict relief
situations. It is also known that transformation
can happen through authentic, learner-centered,
and quality education, hence making education an
important tool for change.
A major report by UNESCO (Delores, et
al.1996) articulates well the role education plays
in human development and identifies four critical
components or pillars of learning for future
generations. The four components are: learning to
know, learning to do, learning to live together, and
learning to be.
THE FOUR PILLARS
OF EDUCATION
LEARNING TO
KNOW
Discussant: Sir Rodcliffe Escasa
Learning to Know
implies learning how to learn by
developing one’s Concentration,
Memory skills, and Ability to
think.
Learning to Know
involves the development of
knowledge and skills that are
needed to function in the world.
These skills include Literacy,
Numeracy and Critical thinking.

knowledge and information needed to work
in a globalized, information society and
knowledge economy, and the tools for
learning how to learn and to independently
acquire knowledge.
LEARNING TO
DO
Discussant: Ma’am Danica Balacano
Learning to do
Learning to do simply means the
application of what learners have
learned or known into practices; it is
closely linked to vocational-technical
education and works kills training.
Learning to do
‘Learning to do’ call for new type of
skills, more behavioral than
intellectual. Learning to do thus
implies a shift from skill to
competence, or a mix of higher-order
skills specific to each individual.
Learning to do
‘learning to do’ means, among other things, ability to
communicate effectively with others; aptitude
toward team work; social skills in building meaningful
interpersonal relations; adaptability to change in the
world of work and in social life; competency in
transforming knowledge into innovations and job-
creation; and a readiness to take risks and resolve or
manage conflicts.
Learning to do
Mastering their own way of learning will
prepare them to apply what they learn which
is the focus in this pillar. Our knowledge will
be more useful if we apply it to our daily life.
Teachers are expected to develop the skills of
the students that will be use to further
unlock their own potentials.

make it easier for them to open themselves
to different possibilities to develop their
own talents and make a vision of
themselves along with the skills they
started to develop.
LEARNING TO
LIVE TOGETHER
Discussant: Ma’am Sherlyn Pines
Learning to Live Together
It involves the development of social skills
and values such as respect and concern for
others, social and inter- personal skills and
an appreciation of the diversity among
people. These skills would enable individuals
and societies to live in peace and harmony.
Learning to Live Together
It is by developing an understanding of
other people and an appreciation of
interdependence, carrying out joint
projects and learning to manage conflicts
in a spirit of respect for the values of
pluralism, mutual understanding and peace.
Learning to live together describes a
concept important for a harmonious
and peaceful society. So, it breaks
down into a few key points:

few key points:
1. Understanding and Appreciation
2. Joint Projects and Conflict Management
3. Respectful Values
Essentially, it’s about building a
society where people can coexist
peacefully, appreciate their
differences, and work together for
a common good.
LEARNING TO
BE
Discussant: Ma’am Trisha E. Glorioso
Learning to Be
Learning to be involves activities that
foster personal development (body,
mind, and spirit) and contribute to
creativity, personal discovery and an
appreciation of the in inherent value
provided by these pursuits.
Learning to Be
So as to develop one's personality and be able
to act with ever greater autonomy,
judgement and personal responsibility. In that
connection, education must not disregard any
aspect of a person's potential: memory,
reasoning, aesthetic sense, physical capacities
and communication skills.
Learning to Be
This final pillar encourages
individuals to reflect on their
own values, beliefs, and
identity.
“As future educators we can
integrate the four pillars on
different subjects”
Examples
Discussant: Ma’am Kristine D. Reque
Examples:
Learning to Know:
In the beginning of the lesson, the
teacher allowed the pupils to recall what
fraction means. They were also able to
give examples of fractions.
Examples:
Learning to Live Together:
During the lesson, the teacher gave a
group activity wherein members of the group
have to help one another to show the
fractional part that I dictated using the
shapes they were given.
Examples:
Learning to Be:
The pupils were able to tell that fractions
can be used when sharing things with others.
They found out that they can divide things
equally to be fair to their brothers, sisters,
classmates or friends
Examples:
Learning to Do:
The teacher gave a worksheet to each
pupil. They have to cut the different
fractional parts on the sheet. In this activity,
the pupils were able to use models to
represent fractions.
Other Examples
Other Examples:
Learning to Know:
I let my pupils go around the school
campus to observe why soil is important
to animals, plants and people. They will
be discovering on their own.
Other Examples:
Learning to Do:
While roaming in the campus, the
activity is to list the uses of soil to animals,
plants and people based from what they
observed then they listed more than what I
expected.
Other Examples:
Learning to Live Together:
In this activity, they learned how to talk politely with
each other wherein they were set not to be noisy as we
conduct the activity that they really took effort to help
their classmate to keep still for the activity to be
successful because they love the purpose of the activity
wherein experiential theory is nearly at their hands.
Other Examples:
Learning to Be:
At the end of the lesson, they realized that even a mud
can turn into meaningful thing. They developed the sense of
responsibility in every little thing that they possess. In
relation to the lesson, they feel the great responsibility of
having more blessings than those of plants and animals that
they have the opportunity to use that strength
purposefully in the life of others.
