Thank you Alana,
Can you tell me what criminal allegations are being made against Grey Tech LLC?
Since Grey Tech LLC was a vendor is there an internal or administrative investigation?
When was the criminal investigation opened?
I am working on deadline. Please provide answers by noon Monday.
Thank you,
Allyson

Aloha Allyson,
To the extent that they apply to the questions 1-5, please refer to our Preliminary After-Action Report,
the Attorney General’s report, and the past official press conferences that provide comprehensive
details addressing aspects of the recovery process following the 2023 Lahaina wildfire incident.
For questions 6 and 7, as MPD is currently conducting a criminal investigation into Grey Tech LLC., no
further information is available at this time.
Mahalo,
Alana

Alana —
I haven’t received anything in regard to the media request I sent yesterday morning. I can
give you a couple more hours.
It’s really important we provide the community with your perspective. With that said I am
working on deadline - if i don’t receive anything by 2pm today the story will say MPD did not
respond to our request.
I appreciate your help working on this.
Take care,
Allyson

Subject: Media Request: Chief Pelletier Interview Request
Good morning –
I would like to request an interview with Chief Pelletier regarding human
remains recovery following the 2023 Lahaina fire.
My question would include but are not limited to:
1. Did all Maui police officers who participated in the recovery of human
remains in Lahaiana (beginning Aug 9, 2023) follow proper protocols
and procedures in accordance with the County of Maui, Mass Fatality
Management Operations Plan.
Specifically I’d like to know if each set of human remains:
2
1. Were given a unique ID number at the scene of discovery.
2. Photographed at scene of discovery
3. GPS coordinates taken at scene of discovery
4. Were the remains placed in a post mortem pouch/body bag at the
scene of discovery prior to any transport.
2. Per statements made by Chief Pelletier in the aftermath of the
disaster – the event was approached like a crime scene. Was all
common crime scene protocol followed?
3. Were MPD police recruits used to recover remains in the aftermath of
the 2023 Lahaina fire?
4. Was there a rush to recover human remains in the aftermath of the
2023 Lahaina disaster? If so, why?
5. What if any steps has MPD taken since the Lahaina disaster to provide
its officers with mass casualty/ human remains recovery training to
prepare them for future disasters?
6. During initial human remain recovery efforts Greyson Abarra, owner of
Grey Tech LLC says Deputy Chief Wade Maeda verbally gave him the
ok to bring in additional staff to assist with recovery efforts. Abarra
says he provided MPD with an invoice for the services provided in
relation to the Maui fire recovery efforts months ago but the Maui
Police Department has yet to pay? Why is that?
7. Will MPD pay that bill in full? if so when?
I am working on deadline. I am available to do that interview with the Chief
anytime before 4:30 p.m. today.
If he chooses to answer the questions in an email – I’ll need his responses no
later than 11:00 a.m. tomorrow Friday Oct. 4 to ensure his answers are
included in the on-air version of this story.
Thank you for your help,
Allyson Blair
