Introduction and overview of the old testament:- The Old Testament is
the story of God's promises to his people. Below its somewhat obscure surface
is hidden magnificent truth about the love and power of God. Throughout its
pages the reader can find promise after promise from God, all of which are
fulfilled in the New Testament-in the incarnation of Jesus Christ.Old
testament consists of total 38 books. Without understanding old testament we
cannot able to understand new testament. Also as old testament is the first
section of the bible. Which talks all about the creation of each and everything
and also about the promise of Lord to the nation of Isarel.
1.1 The foundational books:- The foundational book includes the 14 books of
the old testament.
1)Genesis:- Genesis is the book of beginnings of all creation. Each chapter
talks about the different things that happened and the first five books of old
testament is known as pentetauch or torah in hebrew word. In the beginning
god created the heaven and the earth then the creation of plants,
animals, day, night and humans were made of his own kind. The Book of
Genesis the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament is
an account of the creation of the world the early history of humanity, Israel's
ancestors and the origins of the Jewish people. Its Hebrew name is the same as
its first word, Bereshit means In the beginning .
2) Exodus:- The Book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible. It tells a story
about Israelites being delivered from slavery involving an exodus from egypt
through the hand of Yahweh, the leadership of Moses revelations at
the biblical Mount Sinai and a subsequent divine indwelling of God with
Israel. And the main content happened in the book of exodus is election of
Isarel God elects Israel for salvation because the sons of Israel are the
firstborn son of the God of Israel descended through Shem and Abraham to
the chosen line of Jacob whose name is changed to Israel. The goal of the
divine plan in Exodus is a return to humanity's state in Eden so that God can
dwell with the Israelites as he had with Adam and Eve through the Ark and
Tabernacle, which together form a model of the universe in later Abrahamic
religions Israel becomes the guardian of God's plan for humanity to bring
God's creation blessing to mankind which begun in Adam.
Leviticus:- The title of Leviticus comes from the ancient Greek Septuagint,
which named the book Leueitikon meaning The Book of the Levites. Rather
than being about the Levites the title refers to the usefulness of book's
contents to the Levites in their ministry as priests, worship leaders, and
teachers of morality. The central message in the book of Leviticus is that God
who is holy, requires his people to be holy. It also shows that God graciously
provides a means of atonement for sin through the sacrificial shedding of
blood.
3) Numbers:- The Book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Hebrew Bible,
and the fourth of five books of the Jewish Torah. The book of Numbers was
written to demonstrate that God’s covenant plan stays on track even when His
people don’t. The instances of sinful complaining and rebellion and the
resulting judgment are so pronounced and widespread that it seems like they
will never make it. But even their refusal to enter the land couldn’t prevent
God from accomplishing His plan even though He had to wait for the next
generation. After all of the death, plagues, faithlessness, rebellion,
complaining, earth swallowing, and fire consuming, God’s faithfulness and
covenant promise is proclaimed by the least likely individual: a pagan prophet
The sinful people are blessed not because of what they did or did not do they
are blessed because they are God’s people and He made a promise to them
that He is going to keep it.
4)Deuteronomy:- The book of Deuteronomy is in relation to Israel that is
talking abut election, faithfulness, obedience, and God's promise of blessings,
all expressed through the covenant obedience is not primarily a duty imposed
by one party on another but its an expression of covenantal relationship.
Yahweh has chosen or elected Israel as his special property. Moses stresses to
the Israelites the need for obedience to God and covenant and the
consequences of unfaithfulness and disobedience.Yet the first several chapters
of Deuteronomy are a long retelling of Israel's past disobedience but also
God's gracious care, leading to a long call to Israel to choose life over death
and blessing over curse.
5) Joshua
