PRONOUNS

NOTES:
‘possessive adjectives’ or ‘possessive pronouns’
Subject Pronouns Possessive Adjectives Possessive Pronoun show:
1. that sth (something) belongs to sb (somebody)
2. the relationship between two or more people.

I am a student. This is my book. This book is mine. *We use ‘possessive adjectives’ before nouns.

You are hungry. This is your sandwich. This sandwich is yours. e.g: This is my book. They are our friends.

He is a driver. That’s his car. That car is his. *possessive pronouns are not followed by nouns.

She is a singer. This is her record. This record is hers. e.g: This bag is mine. That house is ours.

(The dog) It has got white fur. Its fur is white. ----------- *Use ‘WHOSE’ to ask who owns or possesses sth.

We are students. This is our classroom. This classroom is ours. e.g: Whose book is that?
It’s Şenel’s book. = It belongs to her.
You are a businessman. These are your cases. These cases are yours. It’s her book.
It’s hers.
They are tourists. These are their tickets. These tickets are theirs. e.g: Whose shoes are these?
They are John’s shoes. They belong to him.
They are his shoes.
They are his.
▪REMEMBER

You can use ‘WHOSE’ with our without a noun.

e.g: Whose glasses are these? = Whose are these (most probably demonstrating the glasses)? They are John’s. = They belong to John.
BE CAREFUL

WHO’S or WHOSE (They have the same pronunciation)

Who is Whose (asks about who owns sth)

We use object pronouns after:


Subject Pronoun Object Pronoun
1. verbs.
I know Tom. Tom knows me. e.g: I have got two cats. I love them very much.
You know Tom. Tom knows you. V
He knows Tom. Tom knows him.
2. prepositions.
She knows Tom. Tom knows her.
e.g: Look at her!
It is nice. I like it.
We know Tom. Tom knows us. preposition
You know Tom Tom knows you. The letter isn’t for me. It’s for you.
They know Tom. Tom knows them.
