CHRISTMAS TREE WREATH (UK Pattern)
You will need:
• 3.50mm & 4.00mm crochet hooks
• DK yarn – a variety of colours of your choice
• Scissors, Darning Needle, Pins
• Polystyrene Wreath – the wreath size in this pattern is 10inches/26cm in diameter, with a
circumference around the wreath of 7inches/18cm.
• Buttons/Sequins/Jewels/Fabric Glue (optional)
Stitches used:
Magic ring, Chain (ch), Double crochet (dc), Slip Stitch (SS), Decreasing stitch – 2dc together (2dctog), Half
Treble Crochet (htr)
Notes:
• When joining a yarn, the neatest way to do it is to put a slip knot on your hook and just work a
standing double crochet into the first stitch.
• ‘2dctog’ is a decreasing stitch and it means to decrease from 2dc to 1dc. To work a 2dctog - put your
hook through the 1st stitch, yarn over and pull through, then, insert your hook into the next stitch,
yarn over and pull through – you should have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 3
loops.
1
Covering the Wreath – Use a 4.00mm hook
The easiest way to cover a wreath is to create a rectangle of double crochet that will stretch nicely around it.
Chain 25 (check this goes around the wreath before starting – you may need more or less chains)
1. In the 2nd chain from hook work 1dc, and then 1dc into each stitch along (24dc), chain 1, turn
2. – 104. 1dc into each stitch along (make sure to chain1 and turn at the end of each row).
To create the same effect as the wreath in the picture, you will need to follow this sequence:
1. – 26. Dark Grey
27. – 32. Light Grey
33. Blue
34. Light Grey
35. – 90. Blue
91. Light Grey
92. Blue
93. – 98. Light Grey
99. – 104. Dark Grey
Check that your work covers your wreath nicely – you may need to add or remove a row or two to get a
good fit. If it stretches nicely, then there is less change of it going baggy once its fixed in position.
2
Once you have it the desired size, fold in half and double crochet the 2 short ends together, then position
around the wreath.
Fasten off but leave a long tail for sewing in position – use a darning needle and work an over stitch around
each row end. Keep the stitches nice and tight. Once finished, sew in any loose ends.
3
Tree – Use a 4.00mm hook (make 2)
The tree is worked in 3 sections.
Chain 13
1. In 2nd chain from hook work 1dc, and 1dc into each stitch along (12dc)
2. 2dctog, 1dc x 8, 2dctog (10dc), chain 1, turn
3. 2dctog, 1dc x 6, 2dctog (8dc), chain 1 turn
4. 2dctog, 1dc x 4, 2dctog (6dc), chain 1, turn
5. 2dctog, 1dc x 2, 2dctog (4dc), chain 1, turn
6. 2dctog, 2dctog (2dc), chain 1, turn
7. 2dctog. Fasten off.
You should have a small triangle that looks like this:
Turn the triangle upside down to start the next section (see 2nd photo above for the 1st row)
1. Join yarn in the 4th stitch along and work 1dc into that stitch and next 5 stitches (6dc), chain 1, turn
2. 2dc, 1dc x 4, 2dc (8dc), chain 1, turn
3. 2dc, 1dc x 6, 2dc (10dc), chain 1, turn
4. 2dc, 1dc x 8, 2dc (12dc), chain 1, turn
5. 2dc, 1dc x 10, 2dc (14dc), chain 1, turn
4
6. 2dc, 1dc x 12, 2dc (16dc), chain 1, turn
7. 2dc, 1dc x 14, 2dc (18dc). Fasten off.
Keep your work upside down to start the next section (see 2nd photo above for the first row).
1. Join yarn in the 5th stitch along and work 1dc into that stitch and next 9 stitches (10dc), chain 1, turn
2. 2dc, 1dc x 8, 2dc (12dc), chain 1, turn
3. 2dc, 1dc x 10, 2dc (14dc), chain 1, turn
4. 2dc, 1dc x 12, 2dc (16dc), chain 1, turn
5. 2dc, 1dc x 14, 2dc (18dc), chain 1, turn
6. 2dc, 1dc x 16, 2dc (20dc), chain 1, turn
7. 2dc, 1dc x 18, 2dc (22dc), chain 1 but do not turn.
Edging - (use the 2nd and 3rd photo above for guidance) With your yarn still attached work 1dc all around
the edge of the tree – start by going up the first slope (middle photo above), you should be able to work this
sequence of stitches around the tree:
7dc up 1st sloping edge, SS in corner, 4dc along straight (upside down) edge, ch1 at the point, 6dc up the
next sloping edge, SS into the corner, 3dc along the straight edge, ch1 at the point, 8dc up the final sloping
edge, ch1 at the top (3rd photo)
Then do the reverse of on the other side of the tree – so it is 8dc, ch1, 3dc, SS, 6dc, ch1, 4dc, SS, 7dc.
5
Chain 1 at the bottom corner, then work 1dc into each stitch along the bottom, join with a SS at the other
corner and fasten off.
Once you have made 2, position them together. Use a 3.50mm hook and join with a Slip Stitch through the
back loops, using white yarn (see 2nd and 3rd photos above).
Baubles for The Tree – Use 3.50mm hook
Make a magic ring and chain 1, then work 8dc into the ring and pull tight. SS to 1st stitch to join and fasten
off. Leave a long tail for sewing to the tree. Make as many as you like, but 4 is plenty.
6
Star – Use a 3.50mm hook and white yarn (cream is used for the photos because white is very difficult to
photograph)
Star Points – Make 5
1. Chain 2, then 2dc into the 2nd chain from the hook. Chain 1, turn
2. 2dc, 1dc. Chain 1, turn.
3. 2dc, 1dc, 1dc. Fasten off – the top row should have 4dc.
It is a good idea to sew in the ends before joining them to the centre piece.
Star Centre – Make 1
1. Make a magic ring, chain 1, then 10dc into the ring. Join with a SS and chain 1.
2. 2dc into each stitch around (20dc). Join with a SS and chain 1 (do not fasten off).
7
Now you will join each triangle to the centre circle one at a time. Take your first triangle and position it with
the row of 4dc against the edge of the circle, making sure the 1st stitch lines up with your hook.
Then join together using a slip stitch (SS), making sure you go through both stitches each time – and make
sure you use the very first stitch on the centre piece (the one from where your 1st chain is coming out).
Once the 1st triangle is joined, do the same with the next one, making sure not to miss any stitches.
When you have attached your final triangle, you’ll notice a slight gap between the first and last triangle (see
photo above), so just chain 1 and SS to the first chain you worked before attaching the first triangle.
To finish off your star you will need to carry on and work 1dc all around the edge (on next page).
8
Star Edging
The rule for the edging is:
• 3 x 1dc on each side of the triangle
• 3dc in the tip of each triangle
• 1SS at the base between each triangle.
So, with your yarn still attached chain 1, then 3 x 1dc up the side, 3dc in the tip, 3 x 1dc down the other side,
SS at the base – repeat until you are back at the beginning. Fasten off and sew in the ends.
9
Snowman – use a 4.00mm hook
Body – Make 2
Magic ring, chain 1
1. 6dc into ring, do not join round, work as a continuous round, and use a stitch marker to mark rounds
2. 2dc into each stitch around (12dc)
3. 1dc, 2dc – repeat around (18dc)
4. 1dc, 1dc, 2dc – repeat around (24dc)
5. 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 2dc – repeat around (30dc)
6. 1dc x 4, 2hdc x 6, (1dc x 4, 2dc) – repeat section in brackets to end. SS to join, fasten off. Leave a long
tail on the second piece.
Position both pieces together. Make sure you line up the stitches correctly, then use a 3.50mm hook and
slip stitch together through the back loops. Fasten off and sew in ends.
10
Snowman Head – Make 2
Magic ring, chain 1
1. 6dc into ring, do not join round, work as a continuous round, and use a stitch marker to mark rounds
2. 2dc into each stitch around (12dc)
3. 1dc, 2dc – repeat around (18dc)
4. 1dc, 1dc, 2dc – repeat around (24dc). SS to join round, fasten off. Leave a long tail on the second
piece.
Position both pieces together and slip stitch together in the same way as the body, leave a tail long enough
and then sew the head to the body.
Snowman Scarf – Use 3.50mm hook (scarf is a simple T shape)
Chain 4
1. In 2nd chain from hook work 1dc, then 1dc into next 2 chains (3dc) Chain 1, turn
2. – 8. 1dc across, chain 1, turn (3dc). Do not chain 1 after Row 8, fasten off.
7. Join with 1dc along the long edge, , then work 2 more dc across (see middle photo), chain 1, turn
8. 1dc across, (3dc) chain 1 turn
9. – 13. Repeat row 8. Fasten off, sew in ends, then attach to snowman.
11
Snowman Hat – Use a 3.50mm hook and 2 colours of yarn
Chain 15
1. In the 2nd chain from hook work 1dc and then 1dc into each stitch along (14dc). Fasten off.
2. Attach new colour in the 2nd stitch along and work 1dc into that stitch and next 11 stitches (12dc),
chain 1, turn
3. 2dctog, 1dc x 8, 2dctog (10dc), chain 1, turn
4. 2dctog, 1dc x 6, 2dctog, (8dc), chain 2, turn
5. 2dctog, 1dc x 4, 2dctog (6dc), chain 1, turn
6. 2dctog, 1dc x 2, 2dctog (4dc), chain 1, turn
7. 2dctog, 2dctog (2dc), chain 1, turn
8. 2dctog. Fasten off.
Using a needle, run a few stitches in the top of the hat to create a little bobble, then attach hat to snowman.
Using black thread, add a mouth and eyes to the face, as well as a carrot nose using orange yarn.
12
Presents – use a 4.00mm hook
Chain 8
1. In the 2nd chain from hook work 1dc, and 1dc into each stitch along (7dc), chain 1
2. – 6. 1dc into each stitch along, chain 1, turn (do not turn at the end of row 6)
7. Edging round – work 1dc all around the edge of the square (6dc down the edges, ch1 in the corners
and 7dc across the top and bottom).
Join with a SS or use the neat join method (outlined at the end of this document).
13
Present Ribbon – Use a 3.50mm hook
Using your ribbon colour, work 2 rows of slip stitches in a cross shape, across the middle of the square you
have just made. See photos below for guidance.
Start with the horizontal ribbon first and join your yarn to an edging stitch here.
Work around the
stitches in this row here
Work each slip stitch around each stitch on that row, and it should look something like this:
Work the vertical ribbon in the same way but from the bottom upwards
14
Once at the top, chain 20 for the bow, then use a darning needle to sew in position. Count down 10 chains
and push your needle through that chain and then into the top of the gift. Pull tight and it should create a
little bow. Sew a couple of stitches over the top of the bow to fix in position. Then sew in all the loose ends.
Make as many of these as you like, and you can experiment with different stitch counts to get slightly
different sizes.
For the wreath pictured, there are 6 presents:
4 are as the pattern above, the taller one has with 3 extra rows. And the small one starts with a chain of 5,
with 4 rows of double crochet.
15
Snowflakes – use a 3.50mm hook
Make a magic ring and chain 1, work 6dc into the ring. Pull tight, SS to join and fasten off. Leave long tail for
attaching to wreath.
Between 6 and 8 of the snowflakes is enough. These can be added at the end once the other decorations
are in position.
Hanging Loop
There are many options for a hanging loop, the easiest is to make a chain of 30, slip stitch to the initial chain
and then attach somewhere on the top of your wreath. Pin in position first to make sure it hangs straight,
then sew in position.
16
Assembling the Wreath
Use pins to attach everything at first, items may need rearranging before the perfect positions are achieved.
Once you are happy with the composition you can either sew your items in place or use fabric glue. You can
also add sequins, jewels etc for extra sparkle.
Tips for Making Different Sized Items
Most of the items on the wreath can be easily made bigger or smaller, here are some quick tips:
• Presents – start with a larger or smaller chain, but make sure it is an even number as you will need
your row of double crochet to be an odd number so you can find the centre for the ribbon.
• Snowman – if you need your snowman to be bigger, just work in an extra round of increasing
stitches on the head, and the body. Make the hat & scarf bigger by just adding extra chains/stitches
in the beginning.
• Christmas Tree – the tree can be made bigger by starting with a chain larger than 13 at the
beginning, maybe 15 or 17 (it must be an odd number). Then the subsequence sections can be
adjusted accordingly.
