Fault finding - Introduction 38C
Faults

Faults are declared to be either present or stored (depending on whether they appeared in a certain situation and
have disappeared since, or whether they remain but are not diagnosed within the current context).

The present or stored state of faults should be taken into consideration when the diagnostic tool is switched on
after the + after ignition feed (without acting on the system components).

For a present fault, apply the method described in the Interpretation of faults section.

For a stored fault, note the faults displayed and refer to the instructions section.

If the fault is confirmed when the instructions in the Notes section are applied, the fault is present. Deal with the
fault.

If the fault is not confirmed, check:

– the electrical lines which correspond to the fault,
– the connectors on these lines (corrosion, bent pins, etc.),
– the resistance of the faulty component,
– the condition of the wires (melted or cut insulation, wear),
– or use the fault finding procedure to check the circuit of the faulty component.

Conformity check

The conformity check is designed to check the states and parameters which do not display any faults on the
diagnostic tool when inconsistent. This phase therefore permits:
– diagnosis of faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer complaint.
– verification that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault reappearing after repairs.

This section gives the fault finding procedures for states and parameters and the conditions for checking them.

If a state is not behaving normally or a parameter is outside permitted tolerance values, you should consult the
corresponding fault finding page.

Customer complaints - Fault finding chart

If the diagnostic tool check is correct, but the customer complaint persists, it should be dealt with according to the
customer complaint.

A synopsis of the general procedure to follow is provided on the following page in the
form of a flow chart.

4. FAULT FINDING PROCEDURE (continued)

Wiring check:

Fault finding problems:

Disconnecting the connectors and/or handling the wiring may temporarily clear the cause of a fault.
Electrical measurements of the voltage, resistance and insulation are generally correct, especially if the fault is not
present (stored) when the measurements are being taken.

Visual inspection:
Look for damage under the bonnet and in the passenger compartment.
Meticulously inspect the fuses, insulation and wiring routing.
Look for signs of oxidation.

Tactile inspection:
While handling the wiring, use the diagnostic tool to detect any change in the status of faults from "stored" to "present".
Make sure that the connectors are firmly locked,
Apply light pressure to the connectors,
Twist the bundle.
If there is a change in status, try to locate the source of the fault.

Inspection of each component:

Disconnect the connectors and check the appearance of the clips and tabs and their crimping (no crimping on the
insulating section).
Make sure that the clips and tabs are properly locked in the cells.
Check that no clips or tabs have been dislodged during connection.
Check the clip contact pressure using the appropriate model of tab.

Resistance check:
Check the continuity of the entire lines, then section by section.
Look for a short circuit to earth at + 12 V or to another wire.

If a fault is detected, repair or replace the wiring.

5. FAULT FINDING LOG

WARNING
All problems involving a complex system call for thorough diagnostics with the appropriate tools.
The FAULT FINDING LOG, which should be completed during the fault finding procedure,
ensures a record is kept of the procedure carried out. It is an essential item when discussing the
WARNING! fault with the manufacturer.

IT IS THEREFORE MANDATORY TO FILL OUT A FAULT FINDING SHEET EACH TIME FAULT FINDING
IS DONE.

You will always be asked for this log:

● When requesting technical assistance from the Techline.
● For certification requests when replacing parts that must be certified.
● It must be attached to monitored parts for which reimbursement is requested. It is therefore used to decide
whether a reimbursement will be made under warranty and leads to improved analysis of the removed parts.

6. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

All work on components requires safety rules to be followed to prevent damage or injury:
– Make sure that the battery is properly charged to avoid damaging the computers with a low charge.
– Use the proper tools.
– It is forbidden to carry out a road test while dialogue is still established between the diagnostic tool and
the computer, as the ABS and Electric Braking Distribution (EBD) functions are deactivated. Braking
pressure is identical on both axles of the vehicle (risk of spinning under heavy braking).

Control of the wheel solenoid valves in order to check the hydraulic system:

Lift the vehicle in order to be able to turn the wheels and check that they turn freely.
Keep the brake pedal depressed to prevent the wheel being tested from being turned by hand (do not brake so
firmly that full brake power is reached).

Select and confirm the command of the wheel being examined ("Front left wheel solenoid valves", etc...)

Turn the wheel concerned by hand; you should see it go through five locking/unlocking cycles.

Pump motor control:

Select the Test pump motor command.

The motor should operate for 5 seconds.

Bleeding the hydraulic circuits:

Apply the procedure described in the Bleeding the circuits section of the Repair step Technical Note.

Summary of the FUNCTION CODES:

– A0: ABS + electrical EBA

– C0: ABS + electrical EBA + ESP + ESP double sensor
– D0: ABS + mechanical EBA
– E0: ABS + mechanical EBA + ESP + CLUSTER
– E1: ABS + mechancial EBA + ESP + CLUSTER + UNDER-STEERING CONTROL

Electrical EBA: System equipped with electrical emergency brake assist.

Mechanical EBA: System equipped with mechanical emergency brake assist.

ESP: Electronic stability program.

Double ESP sensor: a yaw sensor + a transverse acceleration sensor.

CLUSTER (combined sensor): a single sensor combining the yaw sensor and transverse acceleration sensor
functions.

ACC: Adaptive Cruise Control check.

CSV: Under-steering control.

How to distinguish ABS / Electronic Stability Program (ESP) equipped with mechanical EBA from ABS/
Electronic Stability Program (ESP) fitted with electrical EBA?

Electrical AFU has extra elements which do not feature in mechanical AFU, such as:
– A brake light cut-off relay.
– A brake servo solenoid valve.
– A brake potentiometer (brake pedal travel).

Some of the fault finding tool states or parameters will not function, depending on the function code.

REPLACING THE COMPUTER:

After replacing a computer, configure as follows:

– Programming the "tachometric index".

The TEVES MK60 ABS/ESP computer with the tachometry function transmits the vehicle speed signal to all
areas where this signal is needed (instrument panel, engine management, etc).
This vehicle speed signal replaces the one supplied by the speed sensor located on the gearbox.
The ABS/ESP computer calculates the vehicle speed from the wheel speed and the tyre circumference.
The tyre circumference must be programmed into the memory of a new computer. This consists of
entering an index "X", using the VP007 "Tachometric Index" control on the fault finding tool.
Once the index has been entered using the VP007 command, clear the computer memory and then switch off
the ignition. Use the PR030 parameter to check that the index has been entered correctly.

FINDING No dialogue with the ABS computer
CHART 1

NOTES None

Try to establish dialogue with a computer on another vehicle to make sure that the diagnostic tool is not faulty.
If the tool is not causing the fault and dialogue cannot be established with any other computer on the same
vehicle, it may be that a faulty computer is disrupting the K diagnostic line.
Disconnect the computers one at a time to locate the fault.
Check the voltage of the battery and carry out the operations necessary to obtain a voltage which is to
specification
(9.5 V < battery voltage < 17.5 V).

Check the presence and condition of the ABS fuses on the passenger compartment fuse board (5 A) and both
fuses in the engine compartment (30 A and 40 A).
Check that the computer connector is properly connected and check the condition of its wiring.
Check the ABS earths (good quality, not oxidised, sheath sealing ring (on the earth terminal), tightness of the
earth bolt located above the ABS assembly).
Check that the power supply to the computer is correct:
– Earth on tracks 16 and 47 of the 47-track connector.
– + before ignition on tracks 1 and 32 of the 47-track connector.
– + after ignition on track 4 of the 47-track connector.

Check that the power supply to the diagnostic socket is correct:

– + before ignition on track 16.
– + after ignition on track 1.
– Earth on track 5.
Check and ensure the continuity and insulation of the connections between:
Computer connector track 2 track 7 diagnostic socket.

Contact your Techline if dialogue has still not been established after these various checks.

Clear the computer memory.

FAULT
FINDING Locking of one or more wheels
CHART 2

NOTES Only consult this customer complaint after a complete check using the diagnostic tool.

Reminder: Wheel locking on a vehicle equipped with ABS or tyre grating, considered by the customer as
locking, can be associated with the normal reaction of the system and should not be automatically considered
a fault:
– Locking is allowed below 4 mph (6 km/h) (the system will not provide regulation).
– Braking with ABS on very poor roads (significant squealing).

However, if the wheels are actually locking, lift the vehicle in order to be able to turn the wheels and check:
– Possible reversal of the speed sensor connection.
Using parameters PR001, PR002, PR003 and PR004, turn the relevant wheels slowly and check the
consistency of the results obtained.
If the value measured is zero, turn the other wheels to confirm an electrical reversal of the sensors and repair
the wiring.

– Possible reversal of the pipes on the hydraulic unit.

Use the "Front left wheel solenoid valves", "Front right wheel solenoid valves", "Rear left wheel solenoid
valves" and "Rear right wheel solenoid valves" commands while depressing the brake pedal and check for
the occurrence of ten locking/unlocking cycles on the relevant wheel (see the "Help" section). If the ten
cycles do not occur on the wheel tested, (wheel remains locked), see if they occur on another wheel (if a bad
connection is confirmed: repair).
If the ten cycles do not occur on a wheel and the pipes are correctly connected, replace the hydraulic unit.

Check that the sensor holder does not rotate.

Check that the wheel speed sensors mounting is correct (clipping).
Check the conformity of the target: condition, number of teeth = 48 (using the teeth target check
command).
If the fault persists following these checks, replace the hydraulic unit.

AFTER REPAIR Carry out a road test followed by a test using the diagnostic tool.

NOTES Warning: ABS regulation may be unresponsive when car is driven on surfaces such as
icy roads, cobbled streets, etc.

It is possible to feel brake pedal vibrations which are linked to the reaction of the system in particular
circumstances, such as:
– Crossing rumble strips.
– Tight cornering with lifting of the inside rear wheel.
These vibrations may be linked to the activation of the brake limiter when pressure on the rear axle is limited.
If the problem is different, check the speed sensor connectors (micro-breaks) as well as the targets.
