Foreword

From the Publisher

Victor Charushin was born in the Russian Republic ofUdmurtija in 1 932.

He is by profession a civil engineer, lecturing at the Academy of Architec
ture and Building in Nizhny Novgorod where he lives - but his first love
is chess. Victor is well known in the world of correspondence chess, and
has placed among the prize-winners in several European Championships.
In 1986 Victor earned the ICCF International Master title, after which his
attention turned to writing. Charushin is the author of 1 0 books, including
biographies of Alekhine and Bogoljubow.

The present volume, revised and expanded by the author for this transla
tion, is a new and quite original look at a little-understood attacking motif.
This blockading tactic is often seen as an inspired brilliancy, but here for
the first time we learn that Alekhine's Block is simply an attacking
technique, and a skill that can be acquired. It has been our goal to guide
the reader toward greater tactical ability in a manner both correct and
enjoyable. We believe that after reading this book few players will again
miss an opportunity to employ Alekhine's Block in their own games!

From the Author

The theory of the middlegame is yet in the early stages of development.

As a rule, middlegame theory consists in formulating strategic plans of
attack and defense. lbe present study, however, is devoted to a "single
image" type of combination, namely the blockading sacrifice of a piece -
(rom a Knight to a Queen - on the sixth (or third) rank. In the creative
heritage of world champion A.A. Alekhine, for whom this special tactic

7
Alekhine's Block

is named, we find nearly 30 examples on the above theme. In most cases

he was the first to execute this brilliant combination, and therefore it
rightly bears the name of "Alekhine's Block."

This book contains 1 64 games played at different times and at various

levels, from simultaneous exhibitions to world championship matches.
Along with 32 game fragments and study positions, this collection dem
onstrates that Alekhine's Block is firmly established in our modem chess
understanding. This manual is designed for the enjoyment of all chess
players, and will benefit enthusiasts across the entire spectrum of our chess
community.

From the Editor (first Russian version)

50 years ago (March 24, 1 946) there passed away Alexander Alexan
drovich Alekhine, the first Russian world champion of chess, and the pride
of his nation. He died far away from his Fatherland in poverty and
loneliness.

How and why this happened is the subject of rumors and guesswork, with
many versions appearing in chess literature. These questions await their
answer from objective historians, and we hope that such answers will be
found. Here we propose that the reader celebrate with us the chess legacy
of Alekhine set forth in this work. In these pages for the first time the
combinative mastery of our champion is considered from a completely new
viewpoint. This vantage point reveals a remarkable class of blockading
sacrifice not documented elsewhere. We hope that studying the chess
creativity recorded here will provide you true pleasure.

Introduction

The sixth rank is intimidating.

A piece placed on it brings fear and panic to the enemy's army.
S. Tartakower

The object of a chess game is to checkmate the opponent's King. There

are two means to this goal, either directly through attack or indirectly by
the acquisition of material superiority. Of course, the first way is more
natural and more beautiful, but the opponent will try to place insurmount
able obstacles in our path.

Overcoming such careful defense is an extremely complicated task, and

toward this end various tactical measures are employed. Here we shall
analyze one of them, the Rook blockade on the f6 square.

Consider Black's castled position. The row of pawns in front aspire to build
an impregnable bastion defending the King. The first duty of the attacker
is to rupture that pawn barrier. The simplest way to do so is by a pawn
storm, but advancing the White pawns will cost much time and is fraught
with the danger of weakening his own King's position, when failure leads
to an immediate counterattack and inevitable defeat.

A more reliable method of softening the enemy pawn barrier is by piece

pressure. For example, place the White Queen on h4 and a Bishop on d3.
The threat of mate on h7 forces Black to move one of his pawns. The move
... h7 -h6 is the least successful, leading only to further weakening of Black's
position. White's Queen goes to e4 and Black must also play ... g7g6 or
.. f7 -fS, after which his pawn fortress loses strength. Instead, the move
.

... g7 -g6 weakens the dark squares, and makes sense only with a subsequent
transfer of Black's Bishop to g7 - time consuming or often simply impos
sible.

The most active defense against the h7 mate involves ... flfS. This move
begins to illustrate the role of Black's Rook on £8. Before the pawn move,

9
Alekhine's Block

this Rook is passive and only cramps the King. After ... f7·f5, however, the
Rook gains in strength and supports the f-pawn, nurturing hope of a
counterattack.

Therefore, it is a perfectly natural idea for White to blockade the f7 pawn

by placing a Rook, for example, in front of it on the f6 square. Thus the
Black defensive order is pennanently frozen, while White's Rook pene
trates into the enemy camp. True, the situation is complicated by the
defender's ability to cap ture the blockading piece, and the correctness of
this sacrifice must be calculated accurately. But placing the White Rook
on f6 sets in motion this blockading operation, which we will refer to as
Alekhine's Block or simply the Block.

At the beginning of this century the attractive ideas underlying the Block
were brilliantly realized in A.A. Alekhine. A profound understanding of
the game led him to conclude that the Block can be execu ted not only by
a Rook on the f6 square, but on any square of the sixth (or third) rank by
any piece. None of the Grandmasters reveal in their games such variety in
implementing this complex tactical maneuver as does the first Russian
world champion. Although early examples of the Block may be seen here,
Alekhine was the first to systematically employ this device in his Kingside
attacks. There can be no doubt that a blockading piece sacrifice on the
sixth (or third) rank should be called "Alekhine's Block."

As a passive sacrifice the Block should ideally be a "quiet" move, without

a check or capture. Exceptions are possible, for example, in that a Knight
on f6 often gives automatic check, and the Queen's Block is sometimes
accompanied by a capture. It should be stressed that the most spectacular
Queen's Block - that of the Queen on g6 (or g3) - was first demonstrated
in 1912 by Frank Marshall in Game 51. Alekhine's similar effort in Game
52, though earlier, was played in a simultaneous exhibition, and so this
"subset" of the Block should rightfully bear Marshall's name.

It is noteworthy that the theoretical and widely-known Exchange sacrifice

on c3 in the Sicilian Defense represents a modem development of Alek
hine's Block. By means of this sacrifice Black obtains sufficient counterplay
with minimal material loss. The Block's relation to chess openings has yet

10
Introduction

to be developed, but a first step in discussing this interesting subject may

be found at the end of this book (p.86) .

Alekhine's Block has been finnly established in practice. It is employed at

all levels, from blitz games to matches for the world championship. In order
to study this tactical maneuver we propose that the reader analyze the
games given below, which are classified according to the piece being
sacrificed and the square being blockaded. I am convinced that both
beginning chess players and experienced masters will derive true enjoy
ment from these examples of chess an.

Perhaps this combination sho uld be

called "Alekhine's Passage . " In any
case , this theme occurred more than
once in the Grandmaster 's games. A
stil l more spectacular demonstration
of this can be seen in the famous
encounter B o g o ljubow-Alekhine ,
Hastings 1 922. I t also appeared in
Alekhine-Bogoljubow, Rastat 1 9 1 4
and i n Carranza-Alekhine, B uenos
Aires 1 926. More examples from
Alekhine probabl y exist, but here is
a recent interpretation of this idea:
