HEBREW

DISCUSSANT: CASSANDRA ROMANO

"Let us hold fast the confession of our
hope without wavering, for he who
promised is faithful. And let us
consider how to stir up one another to
love and good works,"
HEBREW 10:23-24
THEMES AND RELEVANCE
1. God’s word is of primary significance in the life of every
Christian believer. Christ that essential revelation of God’s
nature became a personified word (1:2-3).
2. We are directed to the work of Christ in Hebrews 7–10,
contrasting the priesthood and sacrifices of the old covenant
with Christ.
3. Jesus came into this world as the perfect revelation of God’s
mind and message (1:2-3). He came from God determined to
pursue the Father’s will (10:5-7).
THEMES AND RELEVANCE
4. In an age of religious pluralism this letter directs us to the
uniqueness of Christ’s redemptive work.

5. Hebrews has a vigorous doctrine of the Christian life, dealing

with apostasy (falling away, chapters 3–4) and the need to
persevere (e.g. 10:10, 14).
PURPOSE

The general purpose of the Letter to the Hebrews is to

convince Christ's followers that left Jewish Temple worship not
to fall back to their old Jewish religious practice.

The purpose of the book of Hebrews is to show Israel that the

“New Covenant” was God’s plan from the very beginning.
DATE

The early church father Clement quoted from the Book of

Hebrews in A.D. 95. However, internal evidence such as the fact
that Timothy was alive at the time the epistle was written and the
absence of any evidence showing the end of the Old Testament
sacrificial system that occurred with Jerusalem’s destruction in
A.D. 70 indicates the book was written around A.D. 65.
AUTHOR

The author of the letter to the Hebrews remains shrouded in

mystery. Even early in the church’s history, a Christian as learned
as Origen had to admit his ignorance of the true author of
Hebrews. Several theories regarding the author’s identity have
been proposed over the years, but all of them contain significant
problems.
