INTRODUCTION
• Mahasthangarh is one of the oldest archeological
sites in Bangladesh.
• It is located in the Bogura District, it dates back to
at least the 3rd century BCE.
• It is a fortified city from the Mauryan period.
HISTORY OF EXPLORATION AND EXCAVATION
• Mahasthangarh, an ancient site in Bangladesh was first documented
in 1808 by Chanon Hamilton, Identified by sir Alexandar Cummingham
in the 1870s as the ancient city of Pundranagara,it became known for
its Mauryan-era Brahmi inscription. In the 1920s, K.N Disshit's
excavations revealed early brick structures and terracotta art and
religious sites.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
• Mahasthangarh is historically significant as an ancient urban and
religious center in Bengal. It has a connection to the Mauryan Empire
evidenced by a Brahmi inscription possible From Ashokas reign.
Excavation have revealed unban planning, Fortification and artifacts
representing Buddist, Hindu and jain traditions. The sites,
architecture,coins seals showcase its role in regional trade.

•Citadel Area: it is a large rectangular & fortified section which is enclosed by massive walls made of bricks and
considered the heart of-the site.
•Govinda Bhita temple: it is an ancient Hindu Temple dating back to around the 6th century CE. the temple complex
includes a raised platform with foundations of various rooms, reflecting traditional temple architecture.
•Mazar of Shah Sultan Mahisawars : it was built with typical Islamic architecture, the Mazar features simple yet
elegant design, reflecting local and the blend of Islamic tradition and culture.
•Archeological artifacts: It includes terracotta plagues, inscriptions, coins and statues offering insight into early art
and daily life.

•Fortifications:The site has large rampart, walls bastions, and gates made of mud and brick,suggesting an advanced
defence system of pundranagar.
•Religious structures: Excavations have uncovered the remains of Buddist stupas hindu temples and monastreries,
these reftect its role as a religious center for Buddist, hindu and Jain communities.
•Artifacts and Pottery: A variety of artifacts, including terracotta plaques, pottery, beads, and figurines were found.
•Coins and Seals: Numerous coins from the Gupta, Maurya and past Gupta periods indicate Mohasthangarhs
importance in regional trade and symbols.

MY OBSERVATION ON MAHASTHANGARH
• Mahasthangarh provides deep insights into early urbanization, trade
and religions life in ancient bengal. It's large fortifications, inscriptions
and Infrastructure suggest it was a well-panned city. Additionally the
coins, seals and terracotta art emphasize the city's role in regional and
connecting it to broader network across South Asia.

• In conclusion, Mahasthangarh is a significant archaeological
site that offers a glimpse into the ancient civilizations of
Bangladesh. The site not only highlights the regions rich cultural
diversity but also serves as a important center for a research
