Brief Description of training imparted by us:

We train mild; moderate; severe and profoundly retarded children. Only

mild and moderate children can take up vocational training due to the
reasons given above.
At Pre-primary level children should identify colors; vegetables; fruits;
vehicles and any; objects i.e. fan; door; home and their belongings like bags;
shoes; their body-parts and their names i.e. they should respond when
someone calls their names. Also to indicate toilet-needs and take food by
themselves, children should have proper eye-hand coordination and be able
to follow instructions.
At Primary level children should name all colors; vegetables; fruits and
objects like vehicles etc. They should tell their names and do meaningful
counting of 1 to 10 numbers using small sentences. They should be able to
wear their clothes and take their food without spilling and wait for their
turn. They should be able to greet others and attend social get-togethers.
At Secondary level they should express their needs using sentences; write
their names; names of their family members; house address; telephone
number; do simple additions; identify clock and calendar and also learn to
serve food and share things with others. They should have an inkling of
money-concept and be able to communicate, their needs in a way that will
be socially acceptable.
At Pre-vocational level they should dress-up neatly; wash their clothes and
plates; handle fire; light a stove; cut vegetables and prepare simple snacks

like sandwiches; coffee/tea etc; write their biodata ; prepare leave letter;
exchange money; understand the difference between yesterday; today and
tomorrow; be able to use calculators and share their food/eatables with
others. These children can exchange jokes among themselves and enjoy the
same. They can listen to their choice of music; watch movies; and also
understand the concept behind various places like hospitals; bus-stand;
railway station; and using a watch to learn concept of time. They should be
able to pack things; seal things; arrange things on the shelf/carton. They
should also receive visitors; prepare provision lists and time-table.
Apart from imparting the above mentioned skills we teach atta-making;
candle-making and envelope making; preparing greeting cards etc in our
Centre.
Severe and profound children have gross motor and fine motor problems-
Gross motor means achieve neck control; sit with/without support; stand
with/without support; walk with/without support- Fine motor means using
fingers to hold things and have balance while holding things. They have
mobility problems and also health problems like frequent epileptic attacks
also- Hence these children can't be taught vocational training. However, we
teach them self-help skills like toilet-indication, wearing clothes taking their
food independently.
Further, few social skills are taught like greeting others; watching TV without
disturbing others and listening to music and playing with others i.e. indoor
games. Each goal can be achieved in a duration of three months to one year
by these children, irregular attendance by these children also contribute to
prolonged time taken for improvement in these children.
Apart from conventional techniques of teaching special children we adopt
various alternative techniques like yoga; meditation; music therapy; games
therapy; cooking classes and outdoor excursions for enjoyment and
recreation that are very often denied to the special children.

Key Outcomes Expected Outcomes from the beneficiaries

Skill enhancement among the intellectually challenged children will
consistently improve.
Consistent improvement in academic, social, self-help, speech &
language skills among the mentally challenged children.

C. Background:

The idea behind starting a school by Sri Vidhyas centre for special children was to develop the skill sets of
special children in academics, social skills, self-help, language which will help them feel accepted in the
community.
The school is addressing the issue of impacting the lives of these special children through specialized training
and teaching methodologies. The children who are enrolled in the school face mild, moderate, severe and
profound challenges. The children are with disabilities like cerebral palsy, autism, children with Down
syndrome, learning disabilities, mental retardation, epilepsy and speech impairments. These above challenges

affect their daily functioning and there is a need for them to be trained in activities like developing their motor
skills, self-help skills, skills for daily living, academic skills, language skills and pre-vocational skills.
For parents with a child who is intellectually challenged, face with feelings of isolation and do not know where
to begin with. Their journey is often filled with strong emotional disturbances, difficult choices, interactions
with many different professionals and specialists, and an ongoing need for information and services for their
intellectually challenged child. The parents reach a transition point where they need new information or
renewed support. Marital problems are reported to be present to a greater degree because of the lack of time
for nurturing the marriage plus the frequent problem of parents disagreeing on what needs to be done for the
child
This school provides a starting point for families in their search for information, resources and support. The
focus of the school is to educate and train the intellectually challenged. Through counseling sessions and
workshops it advocates its cause to the family and community thus empowering them and the society. It
employs sub-staff from the neighborhood and thus in turn is adding to the economic help of the neighborhood
slum.
Goal: The programme firmly believes that every child has the right to learn, play, to gain self-respect and to
develop and use his/her capacities to the fullest extent possible. The goal of the programme is to develop and
augment the abilities of these children through training, teaching aids and methodologies, based on the
challenges faced by them.

D. Theory of Change:

The empowerment of the community and the mainstreaming of the Disabled Children into normal regular
society is the biggest outcome. The nearby Addagutta slum and other Beneficiaries are reassured that this school
will be here for long time. The Children continue to attend the special school with a faith and trust. Some
families are having more than one special child, some are having 3 children coming to the school. The Key
Achievement of the school is thus the fact that the beneficiaries are receiving school support. They are receiving
the correct Training and Education which helps to empower them. Their self-esteem is therefore enhanced. with
their joy and happiness is linked the peace and acceptance in the family and neighborhood. This key
achievement is the main outcome of the project.

E. Sustainability of the initiative

Sri Vidhya is indeed fortunate to be receiving financial assistance from our regular donors and well-wishers.
They have been helping Sri Vidhya and is keenly involved with the growth and development of the school. We
deeply appreciate the Trust they have towards our organization.
However, a growing school with an ambitious vision and mission like Sri Vidhya is continually in search of and
