“Social Consciousness: The GOMBURZA Legacy”

SILONG, ZARAH JAKE C.

GomBurZa is a historical film that highlights the three martyr priests, Mariano
Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, who were executed in the year 1872 by Spain
colonial authorities in the Philippines. Gomburza incurred the hatred of Spanish authorities
for fighting for equal rights among priests and leading the campaign against the Spanish
friars. They fought on the issues of secularization in the Philippines that led to the conflict
of religious and church seculars.

During this time, people who were accused did not have the right to defend their
position, freedom and justice were not shown much during the Gomburza era. “The film
explores the themes of fate and faith in the Philippines, highlighting the unyielding faith of
priests and Filipinos. The dialogue between Burgos and Gomez emphasizing that strong
faith does not always lead to favorable fate. Gomez’s conviction that their punishments are
by God’s plan despite inherent injustice resonates with the universal truth that life’s twists
and turns may not be entirely avoidable, yet they serve a greater purpose” Palma (2024).

As an individual, this film can absolutely provide social consciousness by

connecting their history more closely in order to reflect the values of unity and resilience,
among others. No matter how superior politically and militarily, could ever conquer the
minds, souls, and hearts of a nation whose people truly stand for freedom, liberty, and
human rights. Gomburza also taught us that to be a teacher is to be a revolutionary

In conclusion, GOMBURZA’s legacy continues to shape discussions on social justice,

national sovereignty, and preventing recurrence of historical injustices. It emphasizes social
consciousness, active participation in dialogue, and calls for upholding human dignity and
freedom. The martyrdom of the three priests helped create the Propaganda Movement,
aiming to inform the Spanish people about the abuses of colonial authorities in the
Philippine Islands. Their deaths sparked anger and resentment among Filipinos,
demanding reforms against Spanish governance. Gomburza” has vividly reminded us just
how dramatic and compelling our actual history is.

With the films that were shown during the entire semester. Which of those films has
an impact the most?

With regards to those films shown during the entire semester, one film has left its
impact the most, which is entitled Barber’s tales “Mga Kwentong barbero”. This film tackles
several issues, including women’s equality, political corruption, which is timely and relevant
in this generation, and discrimination against men and women. The barbershop reflects
what gender they have and the challenges faced by women in a patriarchal society, most
especially Marilou. Political corruption and unjustified justice for all show the unlawful
influence of corruption on a nation, from local governance to law enforcement. In contrast,
this film will serve as a platform to promote and fight for gender equality and the
empowerment of women and men.

In addition, this film addresses the double standards that have shaped the
relationship between gender and various fields of interest. The film follows Marilou, a
widow who becomes a widow after her husband’s death, and is forced to work in the urban
areas of Manila or manage her husband’s barbershop. Marilou’s transformation is a
significant feat, as she becomes independent and firm. The film also reflects Marcos’ martial
law era, drawing parallels between the themes of the film. The overall tone of the film
matches the feel and look of the town, and the war between the rebels and soldiers is
perfect. The film achieves humor, depressing, and intense at different times, making it a
great example of how gender roles can be viewed through film.
