Read the passage and indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Children can learn a lot from doing household chores. Doing chores helps
children learn about what they need to do to care for themselves, a home and a
family. They learn skills they can use in their adult lives, like preparing meals,
cleaning, organizing and keeping a garden. Being involved in chores also gives
children experience of relationship skills like communicating clearly, negotiating,
cooperating and working as a team.
When children contribute to family life, it helps them feel competent and
responsible. Even if they don’t enjoy the chore, when they keep going they get
the feeling of satisfaction that comes with finishing a task.
Sharing housework can also help families work better and reduce family
stress. When children help out, chores get done more quickly, and parents have
less to do. This frees up time for the family to do fun things together.
In order to get children involved in chores, it is best to start by choosing
chores that works for children’s ages and abilities. Chores that are too hard can
be frustrating, and chores that are too easy might be boring. If children are old
enough, we can have a family discussion about chores. This can reinforce the idea
that the whole family contributes to how the household runs.

B. Children should be old enough to share the chores.
C. The chores that children do should be based on their qualities.
D. The chores that children do should be hard to develop life skills.
Read the passage and indicate the correct answer to each of the
following questions.
Family Life in the United States
Family life in the United States is changing. Thirty or forty years ago, the
wife was called a "housewife". She cleaned, cooked, and cared for the children.
The husband earned the money for the family. He was usually out working all day.
He came home tired in the evening, so he did not do much housework. And he did
not see the children very much, except on weekends.
These days, however, more and more women work outside the home. They
cannot stay with the children all day. They, too, come home tired in the evening.
They do not want to spend the evening cooking dinner and cleaning up. They do
not have time to clean the house and do the laundry. So who is going to do the
housework now? Who is going to take care of the children?
Many families solve the problem of housework by sharing it. In these
families, the husband and wife agree to do different jobs around the house, or
they take turns doing each job. For example, the husband always cooks dinner
and the wife always does the laundry. Or the wife cooks dinner on some nights
and the husband cooks dinner on other nights.
Then there is a question of the children. In the past, many Families got help
with child care from grandparents. Noe families usually do not live near their
relatives. The grandparents often are to far away to help in a regular way.
More often, parents have to pay for child care help. The help may be a babysister
or a day-care center. The problem with this kind of help is the high cost. It is
possible only for couples with jobs that pay well.
Parents may get another kind of help from the companies they work for.
Many companies now let people with children work part-time. That way, parents
can spend more time with their children. Some husbands may even stop working
for a while to stay with the children. For these men there is a new word: They are
called "househusband". In the United States more and more men are becoming
househusband every year.
These changes in the home mean changes in the family. Fathers can learn
to understand their children better, and the children can get to know their fathers
better. Husbands and wives may also find changes in their marriage. They, too,
may have a better understanding of each other.

Lastly, maintaining the outdoor area is also an important chore. This includes tasks such as mowing the

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
following questions.
Reducing, reusing, and recycling are simple yet powerful ways to help our environment. When we reduce,
we use less of something. For example, we can reduce our use of plastic by carrying a reusable bag when we go
shopping. This helps to cut down on waste and keeps our planet clean.
Reusing means finding new ways to use old things. Instead of throwing away an old shirt, we can turn it
into a cleaning cloth. We can also reuse containers for storing food or other items. By reusing, we save money
and resources, and we create less waste.
Recycling is turning old items into new ones. We can recycle paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Many
communities have recycling bins where we can put our recyclable items. Recycling helps to save natural
resources and reduces the amount of trash in landfills.
By practicing these three actions, we can make a big difference. Reducing, reusing, and recycling help
to protect our environment and keep it clean for future generations. It's easy to start with small changes in our
daily lives. For example, using a refillable bottle instead of buying bottled water, or turning off lights when we
leave a room.
Every little bit helps. If everyone does their part, we can create a healthier and cleaner planet. Let’s all
remember to reduce, reuse, and recycle every day. Together, we can make the world a better place for
everyone.

option that best fits each of the numbered blanks
Humans impact the water in different ways such as modifying rivers (through dams and stream channelization),
urbanization, and deforestation. These impact lake levels, groundwater (18)_________, water pollution, thermal
pollution, and marine pollution. Humans modify rivers by using direct channel manipulation. We build dams
and reservoirs and manipulate the direction of the rivers and water path. Dams can usefully create reservoirs
and hydroelectric power. (19)________, reservoirs and dams may negatively impact the environment and
wildlife. Dams stop fish migration and the movement of organisms downstream. Urbanization (20) _________
the environment because of deforestation and changing lake levels, groundwater conditions, etc. Deforestation
and urbanization go hand (21) ________ hand. Deforestation may cause flooding, declining stream flow, and
changes in riverside vegetation. The changing vegetation occurs because (22)_________ trees cannot get
adequate water they start to deteriorate, leading to a decreased food supply for the wildlife in an area.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
option that best fits each of the numbered blanks.
Because the low latitudes of the Earth, the areas near the equator, receive more heat than the latitudes
near the poles, and because the nature of heat is to expand and move, heat is transported from the tropics to the
middle and high latitudes. Some of this heat is moved by winds and some by ocean currents, and some gets
stored in the atmosphere in the form of latent heat. The term “latent heat” refers to the energy that has to be
used to convert liquid water to water vapor. We know that if we warm a pan of water on a stove, it will
evaporate, or turn into vapor, faster than if it is allowed to sit at room temperature. We also know that if we
hang wet clothes outside in the summertime, they will dry faster than in winter, when the temperature is lower.
The energy used in both cases to change liquid water to water vapor is supplied by heat - supplied by the stove
in the first case and by the Sun in the latter case.
In the atmosphere, a large portion of the Sun’s incoming energy is used to evaporate water, primarily in
the tropical oceans. Scientists have tried to quantify this proportion of the Sun’s energy. By analyzing
temperature, water vapor, and wind data around the globe, they have estimated the quantity to be about 90 watts
per square meter, or nearly 30 percent of the Sun’s energy. Once this latent heat is stored within the
atmosphere, it can be transported, primarily to higher latitudes, by prevailing, large - scale winds. Or it can be
transported vertically to higher levels in the atmosphere, where it forms clouds and subsequent storms, which
then release the energy back to the atmosphere.

Question 23. The passage mentions that the tropics differ from the Earth’s polar regions in which of the
following ways?
A. The height of cloud formation in the atmosphere.
B. The amount of heat they receive from the Sun.
C. The strength of their large scale winds.
D. The strength of their oceanic currents.
Question 24. Why does the author mention “the stove” in the passage?
A. To describe the heat of the Sun. B. To illustrate how water vapor is stored.
C. To show how energy is stored. D. To give an example of a heat source
Question 25. According to the passage, most ocean water evaporation occurs especially _________.
A. around the higher latitudes B. in the tropics
C. because of large - scale winds D. because of strong ocean currents
Question 26. According to the passage, 30 percent of the Sun’s incoming energy_________.
A. is stored in clouds in the lower latitudes B. is transported by ocean currents
C. never leaves the upper atmosphere D. gets stored as latent heat
Question 27. The underlined word “it” refers to_________ .
A. square meter B. the Sun’s energy C. latent heat D. the atmosphere

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.
Being environmentally conscious is not all about plastic bags; it’s about making a lot of everyday
choices. People can be more environmentally conscious through many actions.
Firstly, recycling conserves natural resources, reduces pollution and saves energy. Recycling involves
sorting and cleaning up trash to produce “secondary materials” - mainly glass, paper, metaland plastic-for reuse
in products. Recycled aluminium, for example, is a particularly valuable resource; manufacturing using
recycled aluminium is 92% more efficient than when unused raw materials are used, according to the
Aluminum Association. About 40% of the country’s aluminium supply comes from recycling, but people are
still throwing away nearly $1 billion worth of aluminium cans that could have been recycled every year.
Secondly, people should pay attention to plastic bags. They take hundreds of years to break down and
cause a particular threat to wildlife. Hundreds of thousands of marine mammals die every year after mistaking
plastic bags as food. Many animals get trapped in plastic bags and die. Therefore, people can decline the
number of them when they bring their own bags. Use and reuse all those bags - paper, plastic, cloth - whether
or not they are designed to be “reusable.” If they become too old to carry new purchases, use them to pick up
litter. And, finally, dispose of them properly - recycle them if you can.
