b5 means a flat 5. #5 means a raised 5. A triad is assumed major unless it has m or - to its right. In these
exercises, I will use m for minor only. Additionally, a small triangle may represent a maj7. I will use
maj7 only.

At this point, we will extend these tertian chords by adding 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths.
There is much disagreement amongst theorist on whether all chord tones must
be represented or not so ask your instructor. On another note, if there is a 7th included
in the chord, refer to the added 2nd, 4th, or 6th scale degrees as 9th, 11th, and 13th. If there
is no 7th, call these same notes as add 2, add4, or add6. The 7th makes the difference. Any tone
can be altered with a # or b sign.
