Vinyl Cutter — Guidelines and Standard

Operating Procedures
The purpose of this document is to document the use of the Roland Vinyl Cutter in the FLC
Innovation Center. This machine allows users to cut materials such as vinyl, paint masks,
reflective vinyls, or circuits using flexible sheets.

Usage:
Setting up computer
1. Log in to the MAKR1 computer (next to vinyl cutter) using the following credentials:
1. User name: FL1-130-ICMAKR1\ICGUEST
2. Password: icguest1 clamp
2. Open Cut Studio by clicking the ! icon

Operating the machine white bar


1. Turn on the Vinyl Cutter by pressing the power button.
2. Insert your vinyl material.
3. Ensure the vinyl corners are touching any of the white lines.
4. Shift the rollers so they are underneath the white lines.

5. Pull up the clamp’s lever.
6. Select your type of vinyl using the arrow keys and press enter.
1. The machine will measure your vinyl.
2. If it says “Sheet Unloaded,” repeat steps 3-5.

Using Cut Studio


1. Create a monochrome design to be cut in Adobe Illustrator.
2. Copy-paste the vector shape into Cut Studio
3. Right-click the shape in Cut Studio and select ‘Image Outline.’
4. Click ‘Extract Counter Lines’ and select ‘Ok.’
5. Drag the image to the side, deleting all but the outline.
6. Adjust the outline to the size you want (keep the aspect ratio).
7. Click the ! icon to move the image to origin.
8. When the machine is prepared, click the ! icon in the toolbar on the top.
9. Click ‘Ok.’

Handling the Vinyl Cut


1. Take your completed vinyl material and peel off the material using a probe from the tool
box.
2. Cut the relevant section of your sheet.
3. Apply a contact sheet to the surface.
Ensuring best cut quality:
• Follow all instructions in this manual for preparing a design and using the machine.
• Create a single colored vector image for your design. The simpler the shapes and angles, the
better the results.
• Do a small test cut with your material to ensure that your settings and setup are good.
• Place the contact paper on your vinyl before cutting the relevant section of your sheet.

Safety Overview:
• Always turn off the vinyl cutter when it’s not in use.
• Never leave the vinyl cutter unattended while a job is in process.
• Keep your fingers and hair away from the machine while the cutting arm is in operation.

Specifications:
• Accepts material from 2 to 27.5 inches wide
• Mechanical Resolution of 0.0005
• Cutting Speeds of up to 20 inches per second
• Maximum down force of 250 grams

Maintenance:
Every 6 months: Replace the blade.
