Mechanics and Guidelines
I. General Guidelines
    a) Participant. This contest is individual in nature, with only one (1) participant per
grade level (Grades 3-10) per district. The participant must be an officially enrolled
student from a public or private elementary, secondary, or integrated school within
       the represented district
    b) Topic/Question. The topics for each grade level shall encompass all the
competencies outlined in the MATATAG Curriculum for Grades 4 and 7, and the
       Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) for Grades 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.
    c) Quiz Rounds. There will be three regular rounds in the contest: Easy, Average, and
Difficult, each comprising five (5) questions. The scoring for each round varies based
on assigned multipliers. In the Easy round, each correct answer is multiplied by 1
(score times 1). In the Average round, each correct answer is multiplied by 3 (score
times 3). In the Difficult round, each correct answer is multiplied by 5 (score times
5). In the event of a tie, participants will proceed to a Clincher Round. The
participant who provides the first correct answer in the Clincher Round will secure
the place for which the tie is being resolved.
    d) Time Limits. In the Easy and Average rounds, questions are multiple-choice and
must be answered within 20 and 30 seconds, respectively. In the Difficult round, no
choices will be provided, and participants must answer within 60 seconds.
    e) Science Quiz Facilitators. Each grade level will have a quiz team consisting of
Quizmaster, Scorer, Time Keeper, and a Checker. Their roles are as follows:
       1. Quizmaster:
1.1. Heads the Quiz Team for the assigned grade level.
1.2. Reads the Mechanics before the quiz begins.
         1.3. Reads the questions.
1.4. Directs participants when to start and stop writing their answers.
1.5. Settles disputes or inquiries raised during the contest.
1.6. Ensures the quiz is conducted fairly and without disruptions.
1.7. Declares the winners based on validated scores.
1.8. Performs other functions as may be instructed by the Contest Chairman and
              or the Division Science Supervisor/Coordinator.
       2. Scorer / Time Keeper
2.1. Sets and resets the time based on the time limit provided for each
               question per round.
2.2. Signals the quizmaster when the time is up.
2.3. Records the score of each participant in the score sheet or Tally board.
2.4. Assists in checking and verifying answers.
2.5. Performs other tasks as instructed by the Quizmaster.
       3. Checker
        2.1. Checks the correctness of answers of the participants;
2.2. Informs the Quizmaster and the Scorer verbally of the results of the
        checking per question; and
2.3 Performs other function as may be instructed by the Quizmaster.
II. Quiz Proper
      1. Once the quiz starts, coaches will be directed to proceed outside the venue.
      2. Participants must write their answers on a clean, short bond paper, which will be
          provided by the facilitators.
      3. Each question will be read twice. The participants may begin writing their answers
even during the first time the questions are being read. However, the time allotted for
each question only starts when the Quizmaster says “Start” and ends when the
Quizmaster says “End”. After the allotted time, the participants will raise their paper
and will not be allowed to change or write their answer.
      4. The following are considered erroneous answer from the participants:
          a. Incorrect answer
          b. Misspelled answer
          c. Missing or incorrect symbols, units, notations, subscripts, exponents (if the question
explicitly or implicitly suggests that a unit is required)
          d. No answer
      5. Participants are not allowed to use cell phones or calculators during the contest. Cell
phones must be surrendered to the quiz team.
      6. Any challenges to the correctness of an answer must be raised before the next
          question begins.
      7. Coaching, cheating, noise, and disruptions are strictly prohibited and may result in
          disqualification.
      8. The participant with the highest score will be declared the winner.
      9. In case of a tie, the concerned participants will proceed to a Clincher round, where
the first to provide the correct answer will be declared the winner.
      10. Any issues not covered by these guidelines will be resolved unanimously by the quiz
          team.
