I. Introduction/Description of the Course: Variation is present in all live systems.


Variation in past data leads to uncertainty regarding future. Statistics deals with how
to measure extent of certainty and how to predict in face of uncertainty. Since
business involves uncertainty, analyzing business data becomes important and
Statistics is the only tool for this. A student/practitioner needs to know how to model
data, how to predict, how to know if his/her model is faulty or not. These will be
discussed in this course.

II. Course Objectives: (a) Understand why, where to use statistics, (b) How to measure
uncertainty, (c) Some standard data models, (d) Basics of estimation and testing, (e)
Use of statistics in management, (f) Regression and ANOVA, (g) How to know if
basic assumptions are correct or not.
