Summary Report of Workshop on World Poetry Day
Rationale:
World Poetry Day is held each year on March 21 to celebrate “the unique ability of poetry to
capture the creative spirit of the human mind.” It was founded in 1999 by UNESCO in the
hopes of promoting poetry as a way to communicate across borders and cultural differences.
This workshop aimed to appreciate the sentiment that poetry can create and deliberate on how
poetry can help us form meaningful relationships and enable us to expand our minds about
history and cultures. It sought to highlight the value of self-expression and cross-cultural
communication through language and words.
Schedule of the workshop:
Narajole Raj College observed the World Poetry Day today on 22nd March 2024 in a
fascinating manner.
The workshop was organized by the Dept. of English of the college and contained two
sessions. The first session hosted an invited lecture by Poet Arpita Kundu on "Poetry: In
Concept and In Practice".
In keeping with the mode of a workshop students were encouraged to participate in the
proceedings. The second session thus contained a Poetry Collage Competition on the theme
of 'War and Peace" for students from all departments of the college.

number of participants was 105.

Brief bio of speaker:
Arpita Kundu is the recipient of the Paschim Banga Bangla Akademi's Shakti Chattopadhyay
Smarak Samman and the Krittibas Purashkar. She has been writing since childhood and got
her work formally published in 2008. From 2012 onwards her poetry appeared in leading
magazines such as Desh, Krittibas, Kobitirtho and Kobisammelan. She has also penned
several essays on poetry in various webzines. Her first anthology ‘Gangeya Jamunar Tirey’
was published in 2017 and received the Paschim Banga Bangla Akademi’s Shakti
Chattopadhyay Smarak Samman and the Krittibas Purashkar in 2019. Her second collection
of poems - ‘Parijayi ... Pratnatatwik’ - was published in 2021.
Themes addressed:
Arpita Kundu spoke lucidly on poetic consciousness, artistic conscience, poetic practice,
emotional integrity and aspects of imagination and psychological interconnections among
poets and readers across ages and cultures. She discussed how poetic sensibilities are formed
and how language functions as the vehicle of expressing profound thoughts and ideas. She
selected examples from British, American and Bangla poetry making special references to
poets such as Emily Dickinson, Jibanananda Das, Sunil Gangopadhyay to name a few. Her
deliberations were infused with wonderful readings of select poetic pieces and a curated
representation of her own works.
Outcome:
The diversity, depth and simplicity of her presentation touched our audience. It was really
illuminating for the students and reconnected all of us with the sheer beauty of poetry.
The second session contained a Poetry Collage Competition on the theme of 'War and Peace"
for students from all departments of the college. This novel format of poetic expression and
creative articulation excited our students and several of them participated in the competition.
Winners were given prizes and certificates at the end of the programme and all contestants
were awarded participation certificates.
