Dear Sir/madam

Re: application for M.Phil. in soil chemistry post at UKZN in collaboration with ZSAES for 2025 intake.

I am writing to express my strong interest in pursuing a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in soil
Chemistry, school of Agriculture, earth and Environmental sciences at university of Kwa Zulu Natal for
2025 intake. My undergraduate degree in Chemistry has provided me with a solid foundation in
analytical, research and problem-solving skills, which I am eager to apply to a research-oriented MPhil
program.

The topic "Long-term Impacts of Sugarcane Mono-cultivation on Soil Quality and Crop Productivity on
Alfisols and Vertisols in South Eastern Zimbabwe" resonates deeply with me. As a Chemistry graduate, I
have always been fascinated by the intricate relationships between soil, crops, and the environment.
Sugarcane mono-cultivation, being a widespread practice in the Chiredzi area, presents a pressing
research question that requires urgent attention.

My motivation for pursuing this research was inspired by research conducted by Prof. Pardon
Muchaonyewa in his work on soil fertility management, conservation agriculture and sustainable soil
management practices. This has advanced the understanding of soil chemistry in tropical and
subtropical regions.

To address the potential concerns about my undergraduate background in Chemistry, I would like to
highlight that my undergraduate program included courses in environmental chemistry, analytical
chemistry, and physical chemistry, which have provided me with a solid foundation in scientific research
and analysis. During my industrial attachment period I did research on manufacturing of fertilizers using
agrisilica as filler so as to aid soil conditioning. My Chemistry background has equipped me with strong
analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, which are highly transferable to a research-
oriented MPhil program.

I am confident that my academic background, research interests, and motivation make me an ideal
candidate for the MPhil program at UKZN. I am eager to contribute to the academic community, engage
with esteemed researchers, and produce high-quality research that addresses the pressing issues
related to sugarcane mono-cultivation in Zimbabwe.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my application
and research interests further.

Sincerely,

Tanaka Tsigo.
