MILITARY INING INFANTRY TRAINING WING DRILL CELL. CUSTOMS REGARDING GUARDS 1, The custom of turning out the guard dates back to the earliest days of Armies. In those days guards were placed over quarters and public property for their safe custody, eventually the location of the quarters and public properties came to be known as Guard Posts. HOW TO MANAGE GUARD 1. Guard is managed by Unit standing operating procedures (SOPS) which contains the following: : A a. Number of Guard Posts to be manned. b. Total number of Sentries at each Guard Post. c. Timings of mqunting Guard during working days and holidays or when a'Uniit Has declared a Stand down. , . d. — Minimum number of Sentries on Guard Mount. e. The timings of starting challenging procedures. UNITS WITHOUT GUARD SOPs In case of the Units without standing operating procedures for guard SDP the initial arrangement of not less than Fourteen (14) soldiers (Sentries) should be allowed to mount guard. The number less than Fourteen (14) should not be allowed to mount guard to avoid contradicting ourselves > with the original strength for Quarter Guard which is always Fourteen (14) since the time of the first Quarter Guard. It was introduced for the purpose of recognizing each other commitment, Abilities and professionalism of self-sacrifice for the nation. AIM To introduce recruits how military ranks came into being. GENERAL Generally when Armies .were being formed-the only ranks present were Captain, Lieutenant, Warrant Officer, Sergeant, Corporal and Lance Corporal. 7 Brief History Of The Origin Of Ranks In The Army a. Captain- The rank of the captain is a Latin word which came from the word Captaineus which means headman or chief. b. Lieutenant- The rank of lieutenant is a French word which is divided into two Lieu - Means a place or Position ‘Tenant — Means holding ‘Therefore - Lieutenant means holding a position in absence of someone else c. Corporal - The rank of a Corporal Lance Corporal ~ The rank of a lance corporal RESTRICTED Sergeant - The rank of the Sergeant is a French and latin which means to serve. He is the jack of all trades and admini corparal means head of a square or block of soldiers. . an Italian word which means broken spear. MORE NEW RANKS 2" Lieutenant (ENSIGN) - The rank of ensign is a French word which comes from the word INSIGNIA which means second lieutenant in English and was found under calvary company. His duty was to carry the flag in the battle. The presence of the flag symbolizes the presence of the Commander. STAFF SERGEANT - The rank of staff sergeant was originated for the purpose of keeping the colour flag and stores at the company level (CQ) PRIVATE — The rank of a private originated from from the man who signed a private contract with a company commander. He was paid from the taxes raised from the small holding reasons when the recruitment came they were recruited first but he name of there contract continued to be used GENERAL AND FIELD GRADE RANKS When the Armies grew bigger the king promoted the first three (03) ranks and later shortened them as follows Captain — General to General Lieutenant — Lieutenant General to Lieutenant General Sergeant Major — Sergeant Major General'to major general Brigadier General — Brigades were also formed the name brigade is the French word which means /comes from the word Brigada which means mixed Units (Infantry Calvary and Artillery) The head was appointed as Brigade Commander hence ranked as Brigadier General. : 2 RESTRICTED ‘Scanned with @camscanner RESTRICTED Colonel ~ Regiments were also formed and when marching together on the road they used to form up in column. The word is a French word which comes from colonel meaning colonel. The head was called colonel Commander hence the rank colonel. tenant Colonel _ The rank of lieutenant colonel is French word which originated when the need of the assistant to the colonel Major ~ Companies also grew from minor to major scale level however there ‘was need of a major person to head a company.
