Operation with ECDIS

Introduction
Route, User Chart, Pilot Data and Reference Target position information can be defined in several ways:
· Select button of ECDIS Control Panel and Cursor on Electronic Chart Area as source of Latitude and
Longitude values
· Manual entry as source of Latitude and Longitude values
· Using Digitizer as source of Latitude and Longitude values
Possible objects for which position (Lat/Lon) can be transferred:
· Waypoint of Route
· Point, Line, Area, Symbol and Tidal of User Chart
· Location of Pilot Data
· Location of Reference Target
There are several buttons on Pointing device of Digitizer, but only button 0 is used to enter position. Only case when
any other buttons than 0 are used is when calibration of Digitizer is done (Buttons 1 and 2 of Pointing device of
Digitizer). Below is drawing of Pointing device of Digitizer.

Status (In proximity or Out of Proximity) indicates whether Pointing
device is inside area where Digitizer can recognize it.
4. When this window is open, you can use digitizer as a source of
Latitude and Longitude values.
5. Press Cancel button when you stop use of Digitizer.

How to make a route with digitizer

Route planning can be done with Digitizer. You have to have Digitizer Interface window open, which enables also
coordinates entry by Digitizer. Button 0 of Pointing device is used to enter Waypoint position from paper chart. See
also chapter “Route Planning” in Operators Manual of ECDIS.

How to make an User Chart with digitizer

User Chart planning can be done with Digitizer. You have to have Digitizer Interface window open, which enables also
coordinates entry by Digitizer. Button 0 of Pointing device is used to enter Point, Symbol, Line, Area or Tidal position
from paper chart. See also chapter “User Chart” in Operators Manual of ECDIS.

How to make a Pilot Data with digitizer

Route planning can be done with Digitizer. You have to have Digitizer Interface window open, which enables also
coordinates entry by Digitizer. Button 0 of Pointing device is used to enter Pilot Data position from paper chart. See
also chapter “Pilot Data” in Operators Manual of ECDIS.

How to make a Reference Target with digitizer

Route planning can be done with Digitizer. You have to have Digitizer Interface window open, which enables also

start digitizing using new paper chart or you have moved already calibrated paper chart. To check if calibration is
required, proceed as follows:
1. Press INITIAL SETTING on Control Panel of ECDIS.
2. Select Digitizer from the menu. A following window appears to upper

Pictures 2-4 demonstrate what you have to fill in Digitizer Calibrate window. See chapters “First time calibration of a
new paper chart” and “Calibration of already used paper chart” to find detailed procedure of calibration.

First time calibration of a new paper chart

When you start digitizing with a new paper chart, you have to proceed as follows:
1. After you have pressed Calibrate button in Digitizer Interface window, a Digitizer Calibrate window appears
see Picture 2.
2. Press Name button to give name for calibrated paper chart, see Picture 3
3. You have to specify suitable corner co-ordinates and mean latitude, see Picture 1 and Picture 3. You must also
specify Datum (if known) or WGS84 shift (if known). If both of them are unknown, you must find out
yourselves the required WGS84 shift. Typically either Datum or WGS84 shift are printed in a legend of the
paper chart.
4. Enter value of Mean Latitude, see Picture 3. Typically it is printed in a legend of the paper chart.
5. Enter value of Upper right corner and Lower left corner, see Picture 3.
6. Press Save button to store entered value for later use.

Then Move Pointing device of Digitizer to defined Lower left corner and press button 0 on Pointing device.
Finally move Pointing device of Digitizer to Lower right corner and press button 1 on Pointing device
8. Check from Calculated values that Lat scale and Lon scale are about equal to scale of paper chart. Small
differences are acceptable, because the size and shape of paper chart changes depending on surrounding
circumstances, like humidity etc.

9. Check from Current coordinates field that Lat and Lon values on are close enough values pointed on paper
chart. If you have big discrepancy, continue in step 7.
10. Digitizer is now calibrated, close Digitizer calibration window by pressing OK button.

Calibration of already used paper chart

When you start digitizing with already used paper chart, you have to proceed as follows:
1. After you have pressed Calibrate button in Digitizer Interface window, a Digitizer Calibrate window appears
see Example 1.
2. Select desired chart from Paper chart id list box for recalibration.
3. Check that values of Datum or WGS84 shift, Mean Latitude, Upper right corner and Lower left corner
are correctly entered.
4. Move Pointing device of Digitizer to defined Upper right corner and press button 2 on Pointing device.
Then Move Pointing device of Digitizer to defined Lower left corner and press button 0 on Pointing device.
