Reading the following passage 1 and mark the letter A, B, C
or d to indicate the correct answer to each of the following
questions.
It is estimated that by 2050 more than two-thirds of the
world's population will live in cities, up from about 54 percent today.
While the many benefits of organized and efficient cities are well
understood, we need to recognize that this rapid, often unplanned
urbanization brings risks of profound social instability, risks to critical
infrastructure, potential water crises and the potential for
devastating spread of disease. These risks can only be further
exacerbated as this unprecedented transition from rural to urban
areas continues.
How effectively these risks can be addressed will increasingly
be determined by how well cities are governed. The increased
concentration of people, physical assets, infrastructure and
economic activities mean that the risks materializing at the city level
will have far greater potential to disrupt society than ever before.
Urbanization is by no means bad by itself. It brings important
benefits for economic, cultural and societal development. Well
managed cities are both efficient and effective, enabling economies
of scale and network effects while reducing the impact on the
climate of transportation. As such, an urban model can make
economic activity more environmentally-friendly. Further, the
proximity and diversity of people can spark innovation and create
employment as exchanging ideas breeds new ideas.
But these utopian concepts are threatened by some of the
factors driving rapid urbanization. For example, one of the main
factors is rural-urban migration, driven by the prospect of greater
employment opportunities and the hope of a better life in cities. But
rapidly increasing population density can create severe problems,
especially if planning efforts are not sufficient to cope with the influx
of new inhabitants. The result may, in extreme cases, be widespread
poverty. Estimates suggest that 40% of the world's urban expansion
is taking place in slums, exacerbating socio-economic disparities and
creating unsanitary conditions that facilitate the spread of disease.
The Global Risks 2015 Report looks at four areas that face
particularly daunting challenges in the face of rapid and unplanned
urbanization: infrastructure, health, climate change, and social
instability. In each of these areas we find new risks that can best be
managed or, in some cases, transferred through the mechanism of
insurance.

Reading the following passage 2 and mark the letter A, B, C
or d to indicate the correct answer to each of the following
questions.
For many people who live in cities, parks are an important
part of the landscape. They provide a place for people to relax and
play sports, as well as a refuge from the often harsh environment of
a city. What people often overlook is that parks also provide
considerable environmental benefits.
One benefit of parks is that plants absorb carbon dioxide - a
key pollutant - and emit oxygen, which humans need to breathe.
According to one study, an acre of trees can absorb the same
amount of carbon dioxide that a typical car emits in 11,000 miles of
driving. Parks also make cities cooler. Scientists have long noted
what is called the Urban Heat Island Effect: building materials such
as metal, concrete, and asphalt absorb much more of the sun's heat
and release it much more quickly than organic surfaces like trees
and grass. Because city landscapes contain so much of these
building materials, cities are usually warmer than surrounding rural
areas. Parks and other green spaces help to mitigate the Urban
Heat Island Effect.
Unfortunately, many cities cannot easily create more parks
because most land is already being used for buildings, roads, parking
lots, and other essential parts of the urban environment. However,
cities could benefit from many of the positive effects of parks by
encouraging citizens to create another type of green space: rooftop
gardens. While most people would not think of starting a garden on
their roof, human beings have been planting gardens on rooftops for
thousands of years. Some rooftop gardens are very complex and
require complicated engineering, but others are simple container
gardens that anyone can create with the investment of a few
hundred dollars and a few hours of work.
Rooftop gardens provide many of the same benefits as other
urban park and garden spaces, but without taking up the much-
needed land. Like parks, rooftop gardens help to replace carbon
dioxide in the air with nourishing oxygen. They also help to lessen
the Urban Heat Island Effect, which can save people money.
In the summer, rooftop gardens prevent buildings from
absorbing heat from the sun, which can significantly reduce cooling
bills. In the winter, gardens help hold in the heat that materials like
brick and concrete radiate so quickly, leading to savings on heating
bills. Rooftop vegetable and herb gardens can also provide fresh food
for city dwellers, saving them money and making their diets
healthier. Rooftop gardens are not only something everyone can
enjoy, they are also a smart environmental investment.

Reading the following passage 3 and mark the letter A, B, C
or d to indicate the correct answer to each of the following
questions.
Vietnam's urban population has been growing rapidly over the
past few decades. As of 2020, approximately 37% of the country's
population resided in urban areas, a significant increase from around
19% in 1986. This growth rate has been consistent with the country's
overall economic development and modernization efforts. Projections
indicate that the urban population could reach 50% by 2030, further
transforming the country's demographic landscape.
Moreover, major cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang,
and Hai Phong have been at the forefront of Vietnam's urbanization.
These cities are not only the largest in terms of population but also
the most economically dynamic, attracting investments and job
seekers. For example, Ha Noi, the largest city in the country, has
seen its population grow significantly due to internal migration and
natural population growth. Similarly, Ho Chi Minh city, the central
city, has experienced rapid expansion, becoming a hub for politics,
culture, and education.
In addition to the growth in major cities, there has also been
notable development in secondary cities. Cities like Can Tho, Nha
Trang, and Vung Tau have seen increasing urbanization, driven by
regional economic development and improvements in infrastructure.
These secondary cities often serve as regional economic centers
and offer opportunities for development outside the primary urban
hubs.

In big cities, parks are essential. They provide open spaces
where people can relax and enjoy some nature. With all the tall
buildings, busy streets, and crowds, city life can be overwhelming.
Parks offer a much-needed escape. Therefore, people visit parks for
all sorts of activities. They can walk, run, or ride bikes. Kids love
playing on swings and slides, while families enjoy picnics on the
grass. Some people go to parks to read or simply take in the fresh
air. Parks are also popular spots for doing exercise, with many doing
yoga or playing sports.
Beyond recreation, parks help clean the air and offer a place to
breathe fresh air. Filled with trees and plants, they benefit the
environment and provide habitats for birds and small animals.
Having parks near residential areas is crucial since they enhance

Although already mentioned, it bears repeating that undertaking

research on urbanization in the world and in particular in less
developed countries presents major challenges. The most
fundamental problem is that there is no global standard for the
classification of urban environments. Virtually, all countries
distinguish between urban and rural population, but the (1)_____ of
what constitutes an urban area varies among countries and in some
cases it even varies over time within a single country.
Urban communities can be (2)______ in any number of ways including
by population size, population density, administrative or political
boundaries, or economic function. Some countries define their urban
population as those people living within certain administrative
boundaries. (3)______ countries prefer to classify their urban
population using either population size or population density as the
primary consideration.
The United Nations' report world urbanization prospects, upon which
much of this paper is built, merely presents urban data that reflect
national definitions, (4)______ are far from consistent. Places that are
classified as urban in one country may be classified as rural in
another. In Angola, Argentina, and Ethiopia, for example, all localities
with 2000 inhabitants (5)_______ more are considered urban, while in
Benin only localities with 10,000 inhabitants or more are classified as

THE EMERGENCE OF MEGACITIES
The urban shift over time has led to the emergence of the megacity -
a city with a population of 10 million or more. New York City and
Tokyo were the first known megacities, both reaching an urban
conglomeration of over 10 million by the 1950s. But today they are
far from alone in their size. In 2018, there were 33 megacities across
the planet and (1)_______ major global regions except Oceania are
marked with megacities.
Most of the cities (2)_____ have reached the 10 million marker in
recent years are located in Asia and Africa. In fact, it's where six of
the eight newest megacities can be (3)_____ and where nine of the
10 projected 2030 megacities will be located. These regions are also
home to the fastest growing megacities. The population of Kinshasa,
capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has doubled roughly
every 5 years since 1950. From 2010 to 2015, Kinshasa's (4)_____
grew by over 23 percent, and today over half of the more than 13
million residents are under 22 years old. A combination of factors

fertility rates, and widening of the city's boundaries. The population
is outpacing almost all support structures in the city where the threat
of food shortages, traffic congestion, (5)_____ insufficient education
facilities have become a stark reality.
