Sub: (i) The well marked low pressure area [remnant of Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL”] over north interior Tamil Nadu.
(ii) Heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall very likely over Kerala on today 02nd December
2024.
The Depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL”) over north coastal Tamil Nadu & Puducherry moved nearly westwards and
weakened into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 02nd December 2024, over North Interior Tamil Nadu. It
persisted over the same area at 0830 hours IST of today, the 02nd December, 2024. The remnant low pressure area is likely to emerge
into southeast & adjoining east-central Arabian Sea off north Kerala-Karnataka coasts around 3rd December 2024.
Rainfall Forecast for Kerala and Lakshadweep for the next 7 days
Rain or thundershower is most likely to occur at most places in Kerala on 2nd, at many places on 3rd & 4th , at a few places on 5th and at
one or two places from 6th to 8th December 2024. Rain or thundershower is most likely to occur at most places in Lakshadweep on 3rd &
4th 2024, at many places on 2nd and at a few places from 5th to 8th December 2024.
Warnings issued for the next seven days (02.12.2024 – 08.12.2024)
i)Thunderstorm Warning (Graphics enclosed in Annexure II): Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places
in Kerala from 02nd to 04th December and in Lakshadweep on 03rd & 04th December 2024.
ii) Heavy Rainfall Warning (Graphics enclosed in Annexure III): Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12cm
to 20cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall (> 20cm in 24 hours) at one or two places in
Kerala on 02nd December 2024. Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12cm to 20cm in 24 hours) is very likely
to occur at isolated places in Kerala on 03rd December 2024 and Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at isolated
places in Lakshadweep on 03rd & 04th December 2024.
Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12cm to 20cm in 24 hours )(RED WARNING) with extremely heavy
rainfall (> 20cm in 24 hours)
• Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kasaragod & Kannur on Day 1(02.12.2024).
Heavy rainfall (7- 11 cm in 24 hours) to Very Heavy rainfall (12- 20 cm in 24 hours)(ORANGE WARNING) is very likely to occur at
one or two places in the districts of:
• Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad & Thrissur on Day 1(02.12.2024).
• Kannur & Kasaragod on Day 2(03.12.2024).
Heavy rainfall (7- 11 cm in 24 hours) (YELLOW WARNING) is very likely to occur at one or two places in the districts of:
• Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha & Kottayam on Day 1(02.12.2024).
• Malappuram, Kozhikode & Wayanad and Lakshadweep on Day 2(03.12.2024).
• Lakshadweep on Day 3(04.12.2024).
Probable Impacts due to the Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall/Extremely Heavy Rainfall / Strong winds
• Visibility may become poor due to intense spell of rainfall leading to traffic congestion.
• Temporary Disruption of traffic due to water logging in roads/ uprooting of trees/ breaking of tree branches leading to
increased travel time due to heavy rain and strong winds.
• Uprooting of trees may cause damages to power sector.
• Possibility of damages to vulnerable structures due to heavy to very heavy rainfall
• Partial Damages to Kutcha Houses and Huts due to uprooting of trees.
• Possibilities of Flash floods due to intense spell of rainfall.
• Water logging / flooding in many parts of low-lying areas.
• Landslides/mud slide/land slip very likely.
• Heavy rainfall may damage the standing crops and vegetables in the maturity stage.
• Lightning may injure people and cattle at open place.
• Dispersion of soil from the field and hence seed displacement and poor germination of seeds.
Actions suggested
• Follow traffic advisories issued, if any.
• Avoid staying in vulnerable structure.
• Avoid going to the areas that face water logging problems/ river fronts.
• People in the vulnerable area are advised to move to safer places.
• Propping of the vegetable pandals recommended.
• Take shelter during thunderstorm/lightning activities.
• Provide mulch at the base of the crop to prevent soil and root damage.
• Avoid working in the fields during thunderstorm/lightning period and ensure proper mechanism to avoid runoff in case of
rain.
• Postpone sowing of seeds; if already sown, avoid water stagnation in the field and cover the seeded area with natural mulching
materials like straw, farm residues etc.
• Be Updated.
