‘Religion is of Greatest Importance’
It’s not about what we “have to do”
On the seventh day of Creation God rested. Being made in the image and likeness of God we are
also called to rest and celebrate on certain days and we recall important events.
A Holy day of Obligation is a day when the Church celebrates an important event. We celebrate
these events by attending Mass because the Mass and the Eucharist are the center of Christian
life.
Love of God is preferable to following out of just obligation. We do what is asked of us to show
our love because we love.
It is a mortal sin to choose to skip Mass on any Holy Day of Obligation

The solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, January 1st
Mary's role in the incarnation. Mary was chosen by God to be the vessel through which the
Word became flesh. Her "yes" to the Archangel Gabriel, or fiat, initiated the incarnation of
Jesus.
Mary's model of faith. Mary's journey from the Annunciation to the foot of the Cross is a
model of faith, courage, and trust in God.
Mary's role in the hypostatic union. Mary is directly related to the hypostatic union, which is
the union of Christ's divinity and humanity.
Mary's role in demonstrating God's love. Mary's role as the mother of Jesus demonstrates
God's love and care for humanity.
Mary's role as the Ark of the Covenant. Mary is the bearer of the Divine presence, similar to
the Ark of the Covenant.
Mary as our mother given to us from the cross.
Ascension Thursday, Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter, (40 days after Easter)
Jesus’ Ascension into heaven after he rose from the dead.
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15th
Mary was assumed into heaven after she died. She did not rise by her own power like Jesus.
All Saints Day, November 1st
Feast day for all saints even those who aren’t canonized.
Reminder that our purpose on earth is to go to heaven and to bring others with us.
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th
Mary was conceived without original sin. Only Adam and Eve, Mary, and Jesus were born
without original sin.
Christmas- the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, December 25
Jesus’s birthday
Huge step in the salvation story
Whenever January 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, or August 15, the solemnity of the
Assumption, or November 1, the solemnity of All Saints, falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept
to attend Mass is abrogated. In some dioceses the Solemnity of the Ascension is celebrated on the
Seventh Sunday of Easter. Just go to Mass on those days anyway.
Peter should pull up 2 videos on the TV about all Saints day and all Souls day. Together they should only
take 12 minutes.
I typically plan to much but if there was extra time I would take them to the chapel and talk about relics.
Homework in to pray for all members of the Catholic Church all All Saints Day and to pray for the souls in
purgatory on All Souls Day. Hope this helps!
