Introduction
It has been six years since the publication of Hand in the pocket from my book Faking no longer
available anywhere, The method has gone through lots of changes, including making it work 100%
of the time.

This effect literally allows me to make anyone guess the amount of fingers I am holding up inside
my pocket with physical evidence as definite proof. A quick effect, perfect for any moment.

Then you will find a method which allows me to predict any 50/50 outcome cleanly and an effect
where I predict the amount of fingers anyone lowers from their hand.

IN MY POCKET
The mind reader looks impishly at his guests and then empties his pocket by taking his phone out
and hands it to a woman.

“Could you please hold this for me?”

The woman holds the phone.

“I am sure you can read minds too.”

The woman is doubtful.

The performer places his hand inside his pocket.

He obviously holds up an unknown number with his fingers inside his pocket. He smiles and says…

“Go ahead, name a number between 1 and 5”

She reluctantly answers three.

“Three”

He takes his hand out of his pocket holding three fingers up. No one is impressed or even amused.

He lets the boo-ing subside and argues that he really was thinking of
three, though he is sure no one will believe him. He says he can prove
it.

Slowly he turns his hand around the reveal a large “3” drawn on the
palm of his hand. No one is moaning now.

Mechanics
This effect works with some clever multiple outs, which are completely different and in completely
different places, making the effect impossible to backtrack.

The outs:
1. One or five fingers: They simply don’t choose one or five, because you told them to
choose a number between 1 and 5, if someone happens to name one or five simply state
again “I said between 1 and 5” making emphasis on the word between, I then simply give
them another chance to guess.

2. Two fingers: Here I can make one of four things:

a) With my cellular phone, I have taken a picture of my hand with two fingers held up. I
have this picture set as my screenwallpaper, they have been holding the phone since
the beginning so I now just ask them to turn my screen on

b) Instead of handing them my phone I hand them my keys with a keychain that says “I
will hold up two fingers, I simply direct their attention to the keychain.

c) I hand my wallet with a folded index card on the inside with the same message, I ask
them to open the wallet, and inside they will find the message, I make sure to place it
somewhere very visible so they can easily take it out reaffirming the idea that it’s the
only one, which truly is.

d) I hand my Sharpie marker, I direct my attention to it, they find written in the sharpie with
another permanent marker the message.

3. Three fingers: I have previously written the number three on my palm. When I hold my
fingers out during the first reveal, I keep the back of my hand towards them. Then, reveal I
the written number.

4. Four fingers: I have a business card that says” I will hold four fingers” , after showing four
fingers I reinsert my hand in my pocket and slowly take the business card out, I show my
pocket to be empty and hand the card to be opened.

Credits
In 2012 I felt in love with an effect called Hand Out by Sean Waters. After many times performing it
I made some modifications to the handling and the outs, so it fitted my persona and this was the
result. I shared with Sean Waters my handling and he very kindly gave me permission to publish my
variation of his effect.

BONUS: 50/50 IN MY POCKET

With his hand inside his pocket, the mind reader claims that he has a drawing in his hand and that
it’s either a robot with a cigar or a snowman with a baseball cap and also claims that no matter what
they say they will guess correctly the drawing. They guess it’s a robot with a cigar, the mind reader
even gives them a chance to change their mind… they don’t, the mind reader immediately removes
his hand from his pocket with a single folded index card, shows his pocket to be completely empty,
and hands the card to be opened...inside there is a drawing of a robot with a cigar? How could he
know what they were going to guess?!

Mechanics
A quick little fun effect, where I can predict any 50/50 outcome, this effects relies on a bit of clever
wording and two simple outs.

When in private I draw the robot with a cigar (could be anything), fold it and place it inside my pocket
and I also make a little but very clear image of a snowman inside the hand I will use to hold the paper
inside my pocket… you know where this is going... Then I inserting my hand into my pocket and I
mention that “in my hand I have a drawing” this bit of clever wording makes everything work so clean
since it seems that I am being very clear about the location of the drawing, when in fact, it could mean
one of two things, that the drawing was made in my hand, or that I am holding a drawing in my hand.

The outs:
1. They call the robot: I remove the piece of paper from my pocket, and with my other hand I
invert my pocket in order to show it empty, then I hand the paper for being opened.

2. They call the snowman: I remove my hand with a closed fist from my pocket leaving the
piece of paper behind. I slowly open my hand revealing the snowman.

BONUS 2: MATT’S FINGERS

With his hand inside his pocket, the mind reader claims that he has in his hand a prediction about
something they will do in a minute, he asks them to raise their open palm and to lower any amount
of fingers they wish, as long as they are not all. They lower three fingers, the mind reader even
gives them a chance to change their mind… they don’t, the mind reader removes his hand from his
pocket holding out three fingers, when everyone thinks it’s just a simple joke, the mind reader
cleanly removes a single folded index card from the same pocket, shows his pocket to be
completely empty, and hands the card to be opened...inside there is a message that says: “3
fingers”. How could he predict their actions?!

Mechanics
This is a clever variation of 50/50 in my pocket described previously combined with a bit of Matt
Mello’s very clever thinking from his effect Handy Prediction.

I simply prepare a folded index card with the message: “3 fingers” on the inside and I write the number
4 in the palm of my hand, I leave the index card inside my pocket and I am set to perform.

When the time comes I simply place my hand with the number 4 inside my pocket that has the index
card and I claim to my audience: ”In my hand I have a prediction about something you will do in a
minute.” (Notice that I am telling them exactly where my prediction is located using my 50/50 in my
pocket principle).

I then ask them to extend their opened palm and to lower any amount of fingers they wish as long as
they don’t lower them all. As soon as they lower a number of fingers I ask them if they want to change
their mind, they can, it does not matter, then, I reveal:

1. If they lower one finger: I tell them “So you are left with four fingers”, I take my hand out of
my pocket holding out four fingers, then I proceed to reveal the number four from behind my
palm.

2. They lower two fingers: I tell them “So you are left with three fingers”, I take my hand out of
my pocket holding out three fingers, then I take the index card from my pocket, I show my
pocket to be empty and I hand the card be opened.

3. They lower three fingers: I tell them “So you lower three fingers”, I take my hand out of my
pocket holding out three fingers I take the index card from my pocket, show my pocket to be
empty and I hand the card be opened.

4. They lower four fingers: I tell them “So you lower four fingers”, I take my hand out of my
pocket holding out four fingers, then I proceed to reveal the number four from behind my
palm.
