context

Donald Trump, a businessman and television host, was the United States’ 45th
president. His presidency’s most important feature was the handling of
immigration, which included building a wall at the southern border and enforcing
stricter deportation measures. These policies, which were exceptionally divisive,
were a product of an ongoing migration crisis but also of aggravated relations
with Mexico and the rest and all of Latin America.
question : Why are Trump’s immigration policies regarded in such negative light,
and how do they serve both US internal issues and its external landscap
I) Fundamentals of Trump’s Immigration Policy
a) Immigration as a National Security Issue
His argument was that immigration was a national security risk and illegal
immigration posed a direct relationship with crime and terrorism, which would
always help him with his support base. He his base, illegal immigration meant
increased taxes and security risks. “Trump’s style, I believe, is fueled with the
perception that immigrations hinders Americas’ security and sovereignty.”
b) The Border Wall as a Tangible Solution
Among the policies that he implemented was the building of a physical border
wall that he made popular as part of the ‘America First’ slogan aimed at reducing
illegal immigration but caused friction with Mexico relations. “The Mexican wall
has constructed huge and painful rivalries with that country.”
II) The immigration policy adopted by Trump: The American internal environment
a) Very Popular with the constituents who endorse his election and very negative
among the Democrats
To many of Trump’s defenders, his policies are necessary measures for ensuring
job and security, to the Democrats, Trump’s policies are racist and selfish. This
has turned immigration into a central topic of contestation in American politics.
“His base’s approval for his policies is unwavering, but the Democrats could not
have been more opposed to them.”
b) Government Departments – ICE and SHS
Trump’s policies forced ICE or SHS to apply the immigration policies with their
letra. Families were split and deportations became a common practice under
Trump. Other critics regarded such policies as human abuse, while Trump’s
supporters defended such policies as being strictly applied. “In Trump’s time, ICE
has been instructed to tighten the noose on illegal immigration.”
III) Regional Security and cooperation dynamics in Americas
a) Disturbance of cordial relationship between US and Mexico and central
America countries
Policies of border security and asylum application introduced by trump
aggravated the situation with Mexico and Central America. Policy aggravation of
US relationship with those countries outdid improvement of US relationship with
others. Such relationship inhibitions put a strain on diplomacy and trade
relationship thereby causing fragmentation in the region.
b) The World’s Pointing View of the United States
America’s international reputation suffered greatly and under his presidency, the
country was simply seen as ‘isolationist’ and did not care much about migration
issues across the globe. American critics spoke out and their accusations were
straightforward stating that the U.S. is self-centered and is turning a blind eye on
fundamental issues such as war and poverty that create migration. “Trump’s
rhetoric and policies have America’s image changed in the eyes of every nation. “
Conclusion
The immigration policies introduced by Trump have illustrated the issue of
America First continuously being met with political cleavage resulting in harsh
actions towards the country’s foreign relations and global standing. Should these
policies be reinstated, there is no doubt that they would worsen both the
international and the internal state.
Key Question: How significant will migration continue to be a determining factor
in the American political debate and the voting patterns among the populations
during the next election .
