Prescribed Title:

6. Does acquiring knowledge destroy our sense of wonder? Discuss with

reference to two areas of knowledge.

AOK1: Natural Sciences

AOK2: History

First claim: Yes, because the more we learn the less there is to imagine.

First claim real life situation (s): When you find out that DNA is formed from molecules as simple as
phosphate and sugars it removes that sense of wonder since you can’t really imagine anything else.
There are no more endless possibilities as to what genetic material is.

Second claim: Yes, because in a way history repeats itself so anything that we find out has probably
happened before and will probably happen again, taking away that uncertainty and possible novelty
in events, both past and present.

Second claim real life situation (s): For example, the clear comparison of the roman empire and the
Spanish empire. This can be seen since both of them conquered vast amounts of the known land and
then quickly fell while still holding on and controlling their regions.

First counter claim: No, because there is always more to discover.

First counter claim real life situation (s): After people found out everything was made out of cells,
there was an even greater sense of wonder in discovering what could be found inside them. This
allowed humans to explore further than we ever thought possible, allowing us to make incredible
discoveries.

Second counter claim: No, because learning about things can give us a better understanding and
appreciation.

Second counter claim real life situation (s): For instance, learning about the scientific breakthroughs
during the Renaissance can cause a sense of wonder and appreciation at the intellectual progress
made over centuries. As well as how humans have continued to research and discover despite any
challenges.

Challenge: Other possible discussion points related to the title.
