UNIT TEST (Week 2) – MARCH -2020

GRADE 13 – 1 1/2 HOURS

1. Comment on one of the following.

a) “Listen, boys, don’t go to work on the line. There is going to be a general

cleaning first.” I used to like general cleaning. Nothing specific, you know, little
bit here, little bit there. But that day Yessus… in came the big machines with hot
water and brushes – sort of electric mop- and god alone knows what else. We
started on the floors. The oil and dirt under the machines was thick. Man.

b) “A child of eight killed a cat!”

“Get away”

“It’s a fact. What about that, eh? A child of eight killing a cat!”
“How did he do it?”

c) “If my offence be of such mortal kind

That nor my service past, nor present sorrows
Nor purpos’d merit in futurity,
Can ransom me into his love again,
But to know so must be my benefit,
So shall I clothe me in a fore’d content
And shut myself up in some other curse
To fortune’s alms”

d) “What gives her any idea? However, you do act strangely. I’m not criticizing,
understand that? I know your ambitious do not lie in the warehouse, like
everybody in the whole wide world_ you’ve had to_ make sacrifices, but life’s
not easy, it calls for spartan endurance! There’s so many things in my heart that I
cannot describe to you!”

Would I admit ; no name of magistrate
Letters should be knows ;
Riches, poverty,
And use of service,
None; contract, succession,
Bourn, bound of land tilth, vineyard
-None
No use of metal, corn or oil
No occupation.
All men idle, all, and women too, but innocent and pure;
No sovereignty”

2. Comment on one of the following.

a) “Tess had never in her recent life been so happy as she was now, possibly never
would be so happy again. She was for one thing, physically and mentally suited
among these new surroundings. The sapling which had rooted down to a
poisonous stratum on the spot of its sowing had been transported to a deeper
soil.”

b) “Privately I thought well, and what is we gave into our troubles at every step!
We would be pitiable creatures indeed to be so weak, for is not a man’s spirit
even to him to rise above his misfortunes”

c) “He did nothing of the sort. He only looked fixedly into the jungle. Then Richard
Parker, companion of my torment, awful, fierce thing that kept me alive, moved
forward and disappeared forever from my life.”

d) “A servant replied uninterestedly to a dutiful enquiry on the part of the good

madam who knows better than to expose herself to an answer from the real
facts of his life: - I think Ellen she’s go home to her auntie there in Botswana.
Small small village. Like my home. Is quiet there for black people.
